On Thursday, G. M. Lawrence, the efficient sheriff of Paulding county, brought Jack Cooper and George Johnson, two negro men, to the jail at this place for safe keeping, having been arrested for attempting to commit rape on Mrs. Sallie Cole, a highly respectable lady, living seven miles west of Dallas.

These negro scoundrels went late at night to her residence to accomplish their hellish designs. Johnson remained outside the door, while Jack Cooper noiselessly entered the bedroom of Mrs. Cole, seized her person and placed his hand over her mouth, to prevent her from screaming, which aroused her from her slumbers. In her efforts of resistance, her hand came in contact with the negro’s wooly head, which revealed to her the fact that the intruder was a negro. He succeeded in pulling her off the bed by her feet, when her little boy and girl ran out doors and screamed. This so frightened the negroes that both of them abandoned their evil purposes and fled.

An excited crowd went in pursuit. Mr. Cooper, brother of the lady, captured Johnson near Villa Rica, who confessed that he was at the house and that the negro Jack Cooper was the party who entered the residence.

A search resulted in the capture of Jack Cooper on Tuesday last, who stubbornly denies guilty; but that other negro positively asserts that he is the right man.
