Dr. W.C. Smith, U.S. commissioner, took the oath of office yesterday morning, and at 11 o’clock a.m. tried the case of Jesse Rose, a colored citizen of Paulding county, who was arrested by Deputy United States Marshal L. G. Pirkle, forty miles from Atlanta, about 1 o’clock yesterday morning. He was committed in default of a bond, was sent to jail, carried from there before the district court, entered a plea of guilty, and was sentenced to thirty days’ imprisonment, and was back in jail serving out this sentence before 1 o’clock p.m. of the same day. |
