Still Raided in Paulding. Deputy Collector Moore and Deputy Marshal M. W. Scott yesterday morning made a raid for moonshiners in Paulding county and landed one suspect, together with a large copper still and all the utensils necessary for the manufacture of whisky. The deputies had been on the lookout for a still in Paulding for some time and yesterday they decided to go down and see what they could find. The house of James W. Mitchell was searched for signs of illicit distilling, but for a time nothing was found. Just as the deputies were about o give up the search one of them discovered a trapdoor in a stall of the stable and in it they found the copper still nearly packed away, but showing signs of very recent use. The owner of the house was arrested and brought to Atlanta yesterday morning, together with all his utensils for making whiskey. The evidence in the case was strong against the accused party and in the trial yesterday morning before Judge N.R. Broyles. Mitchell was placed under a $200 bond and bound over to the October term of the federal court. Mitchell is a well-known man, and his arrest caused considerable excitement when it was made known. |
