Mrs. Bessie Lou Baggett Passes April 25, 2005

Mrs. Bessie Lou Baggett, age 97, of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2005 at Haralson County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born August 31, 1907 in Paulding County, Georgia, daughter of the late James Washington Dobbins and the late Odessa Defreeze Dobbins. She was the oldest living member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She attended Bethel School, Dallas School & A&M College at Macland and Carrollton, GA. She said that her father always told them, “Get a good education. That is something that can’t be taken away from you.” This thirst for knowledge and her love of children led her to be a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse before her marriage. She taught at the Oak Hill School located about a mile above New Hope. While she taught at Oak Hill, she boarded with Chester and Nannie Harris.

Bessie L. Baggett Elementary School, located on Williams Lake Road, was named after her. J. A. Dobbins Middle School, located on Williams Lake Road was named after her brother, James Arthur Dobbins. These schools are located on part of the Dobbins homeplace. This is probably the only place that schools were named after a sister and brother during their lifetimes and were located almost directly across the road from each other.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Forest (Bud) and Christine Baggett of Bremen, Jimmy and Ann Baggett of Mapleton, Oscar Jack Baggett, of Douglasville, Loretta (Donald) Baggett of Douglasville, daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Roy Lee Strickland of Villa Rica; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, James and Odessa Baggett, she was preceded in death by her son, Donald Baggett; two grandsons, Jimmy Jack Baggett and Royce James Strickland; sister, Georgia Opal Dobbins and brothers, James Arthur Dobbins and Thomas Anderson Dobbins.

Funeral Services were conducted on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 3:00 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church, Hiram, GA, with Pastor Harry A. Hawkins officiating.

Interment followed in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lamar Baggett, Russell Baggett, Tracy Baggett, Scott Baggett, Scott Grantham, Edward Brewer and Tony Baggett.

Arrangements by Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home, Douglasville, GA.
