Joel Leon Atkins passes away early Wednesday
Joel Leon Atkins, 47, Cedartown, Rt. 3, died early Wednesday morning in Polk General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Polk County, June 22, 1918, and had lived his entire life here. He was a member of Young's Grove Baptist Church, a Veteran of World War 11 and was formerly Chief of Polk County Police Department. Surviving are: his wife, the former Miss Mary Agnes Landers; one daughter--Miss Sandra Atkins of Cedartown; two sons-- Eddie Atkins of Rome and Wayne Atkins of Cedartown; his parents-- Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Atkins of Cedartown; three sisters--Mrs. W. A. Williams, Mrs. Paul Lankford and Miss Charlene Atkins of Cedartown; three brothers-- W.J. Atkins of Cedartown, G. V. Atkins of Atlanta and Wallace Atkins of Las Vegas, Nevada. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Jake Cash, the Rev. Gordon Willingham, the Rev. Herman Tidwell and the Rev. Doyle Ricks officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Clifford Williams, Seals Williams, Dennis Atkins, Ted Adkins, Carey Atkins and Claude Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be: Eugene Forsyth, Frank Lott, H.R.Williams, Charles Chambers, W.M. Moss, and Edward Jackson. Mr. Atkins will lie in state at the residence on Cedartown, Route 3, until the hour of service. Olin Gammage Funeral Home of Cedartown is in charge of arrangements.
