James Peek Everett, Jr.
James Peek Everett, Jr., Ph.D., 73, died Sept. 11, 2004. The only son of the late James Peek Everett and Earline Fuller Everett, he was born on the family homestead in Polk County on December 9, 1930.
Dr. Everett is survived by his wife, Veronica Anne Coyne Kilkerr Everett, whom he married on January 10, 1969; son, Mark; a sister, Jane Everett Lynn; grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
He was the valedictorian and class president of the Rockmart High School class of 1948, he enrolled at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) and graduated in 1952. He was the editor of the student paper, The Plainsman, during his senior year. On graduation he was commissioned an ensign is the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant (j.g.) he later joined the crew of the U.S.S. Aucilla (AO56), a tanker with the Sixth Fleet. In 1954 he returned to Rockmart and worked for a year as crew chief for the U.S. Department of Commerce conducting the census of Agriculture. Following this, he started the MS program at the University of Kentucky and then on to Michigan State for his Ph.D. After graduation, he joined the faculty of North Carolina State College (now University) in Raleigh, N.C. Dr. Everett moved to St. Louis, Mo., and began his career with the Ralston Purina Company on June 3, 1963. In 1978, he was transferred to Tampa, Fla. to start a new consulting program servicing large dairy operations. He retired from Purina Mills on Dec. 31, 1999, but continued as a part-time consultant through June 2001. He was a member and former lector of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa and one of the founding members of Friends of Sacred Heart. Also, one of the first members of Los Caballeros del Centro Asturiano de Tampa and its current recording secretary.
A Funeral Mass was offered for the repose of his soul Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 509 Florida Ave.
Graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedartown. Rev. Brian Kilkerr officiated.
Pallbearers included: Craig Everett Lynn, David Lynn, Matthew Kilkerr, Joseph D. Pitts, Ph.D., Richard Freeman, Ph.D., Patrick Freeman, Rich Greene, Darrell Britt, David Lindsay and Kevin Suarez. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Friends of Sacred Heart or to the Centro Asturiano de Tampa.
The Gonzalez Funeral Home in Florida had charge of the arrangements. (The Cedartown Standard, Cedartown, September 21, 2004)
