Thomas Ferguson Rites Friday Near Rockmart
Mr. Thomas Roland Ferguson, age 85, passed away at his home in the New Prospect Community near Rockmart on Wednesday night, September 23rd after an extended period of failing health. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Ferguson (Nannie Harris). He was the last of a family of seven daughters and two sons. He was a native of the Taylorsville-Davistown section, moving with his family to the section northwest of Rockmart around 65 years ago.
Mr. Ferguson was a retired farmer. He was a member and a deacon of the New Prospect Baptist Church.
He was married twice, first to Miss Lizzie Nettles who died on Dec. 31, 1921. A few years later he was married to Miss Dolly Strange. In addition to his widow, he is survived by four sons and five daughters as follows: W. Nettles Ferguson of Decatur, who many years ago was on the staff of The Tribune News, Fred B. Ferguson of Atlanta, Charles B. Ferguson of Birmingham, who lived in Cartersville for a time some years ago being a trainman on the Cartersville-Rockmart branch of the Seaboard Railway. Thomas Ray Ferguson of Marietta, Mrs. Robert N. White of near Rockmart, whose husband is a native of the Pine Log-Rydal section, Mrs. R. H. Mintz, Jr. of Rockmart, Mrs. James R. Brumbelow of Forest Park, Mrs. Ruth Ferguson Tuck of the New Prospect Community and Mrs. Richard A. Shoaf of Albany. Also, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Ferguson was conducted on Friday afternoon, September 25th from the New Prospect Church with the Rev. R. S. Manning of Chickamauga, a former pastor and the Rev. Mack Puckett, the pastor, officiating in the presence of a large group of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment took place in the church cemetery. Eight of his grandsons were pallbearers. Deacons of his church were the honorary pallbearers.
