Mrs. Sara Delores McElwee Martin
Mrs. Sara Delores McElwee Martin, age 84, of Cedartown, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Polk General Hospital in Cedartown, Georgia while under Hospice care for terminal ovarian cancer. Mrs. Martin was born in Polk County on February 19, 1925.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Julius King Martin, Jr. of Ohatchee, AL; daughter, Bonnie Joanne Martin; two sisters, Retha Carter and Frances Merteal Jolly; two brothers, Horace McElwee and Irvin McElwee; and parents, David Grant McElwee and Daisy Belle Woodward McElwee.
Mrs. Martin is survived by a sister, Inez Moore of Vista, CA; a son and daughter-in-law, James Kenneth and Belinda Shinall Martin of Rome, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn Kay Martin and Neil Byrd of Ohatchee, AL; a grandson, Jason Kirk Martin of Chicago, IL; a granddaughter, Laura Ann Sullins of Duluth, GA; a step grandson, Wesley Byrd and his wife Sarah and their four children of Alexandria, AL; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She lived most of her life in Cedartown, Georgia where she was a member and Sunday School teacher at Shiloh Baptist Church in Esom Hill, Georgia where she spent her early years. She had some fun times playing bingo on Wednesdays and taking trips with friends from the Cedartown Nutrition Center and Southside Baptist Church in Cedartown where she later became a member. Sara formerly lived and worked in Atlanta, Georgia and also in Ohatchee, Alabama where she worked for the Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama.
The Graveside Funeral service for Mrs. Martin will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Cemetery Church in Esom Hill, Georgia with Rev. Robert Wright officiating. Rev. Joel Smith will conduct the family prayer. The visitation for family and friends will be held at the Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home in Cedartown, Georgia from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. prior to the Graveside service. David McElwee, Wesley Byrd, Bobby Sullins, David Shelton, and Willie Truett will serve as Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Cedartown Nutrition Site Council, 605 Lynton Dr.,Cedartown, GA 30125 or the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 433 Shiloh Rd., Cedartown, GA 30125.
The Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Mrs. Sara Delores McElwee Martin.
