James R. McCombs
James R. McCombs, 82, of Cedartown, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008 after several years of declining health. He was born June 19, 1925 in Polk County to Dudley and Irene McCombs. He was a World War 11 veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a long time member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Sue Carter, and one brother, Bill Winkles. Mr. McCombs is survived by his wife Elizabeth Pyles McCombs. Also surviving are daughters and son-in-laws, Barbara and Larry Welchel, Sandy and Doug Ballard; daughters, Pat Turoso and Denise McCombs; four grandsons, six great-grand- children; sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Herbert Johnson; brother-in-laws and their wives, Robert and Mary Pyles, Posey and Jean Pyles, Jimmy and Rhonelda Pyles; and sister-in-law Agnes Martin. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Swift and Rev. Anthony Osborne officiating. Interment followed at Polk Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by Brewster-Cleveland American Legion Post No. 86 Honor Guard. The following served as pallbearers; Jason Welchel, Jack Kennedy, Tony Turoso, Brian Ballard, James Guffey, Stacy Kennedy and Chelsea McCombs. The Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
