Mr. Moss
Mr. William Marion "Chief" Moss, 84, of 309 Marshall St. Cedartown, passes away Sunday July 23, 2006.
Mr. Moss was born June 6, 1922 in Polk County, son of the late Lula White Moss and the late James Elbert Moss. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown where he served as chairman of ushers for many years. He was employed with the City of Cedartown for 43 years, 34 years as Chief of Police, retiring on Feb. 1, 1988.
He served as a Cedartown City Commissioner, Chairman of the Red Cross Blood Program for 30 years, two terms as President of Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, President of the Cedartown Lions Club and was a member of the Northwest Georgia Police Academy. He was recognized for his service to the community by the Cedartown Optimist Club, the Exchange Club of Cedartown, and numerous other groups.
He was also recognized as the outstanding Chief of Police for 1970 by the Georgia Association Chiefs of Police. Chief Moss was appointed by Governor Lester Maddox to the Georgia Peace Officers Standard and Training Council for four years. Mr. Moss was preceded in death by a son, Marion Gary Moss; a grandson, Marion Gary "Chip" Moss, two sisters and five brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joyce Gary Moss, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Claire Stephens Moss Albright of High Point, N.C.; one granddaughter and one great-graddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 29 at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Cedartown with Dr. Jerry Mahan, Dr. David Taylor, and Monsignor Don Kiernan officiating. Internment followed in the family lot of Nort View Cemetery.
The following were asked to serve as pallbearers. Everett Willis, Henry King, Larry Wallas, John Freeman, Tom Lowe and Jack Kirpatrick. Honorary pallbeares asked to serve were Hugh Hardison, Bob Hopper, Raymond Kuglar, Bert Wood, members of the Cedartown Lions Club, and Law Enforcement Officers.
Freeman Harris Funeral Home in association with the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home had charge of the funeral services.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joyce Gary Moss to whom he was married on August 21, 1945; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Claire Stephens Moss Albright of High Point, N.C.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Lisa Haney and her husband Jeffrey of Cedartown; great-graddaughter, Emily Haney.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 29 in the First Baptist Church of Cedartown with Dr. Jerry Mahan, Dr. David Taylor, and Monsignor Don Kiernan officiating. Internment followed in North View Cemetery.
