Mr. Earl Smith
Mr. Earl Smith, 87, of 22 David Dr., Cave Spring, died Saturday, June 28 following an extended illness. Smith was born in Cherokee County, Ala. on Nov. 5, 1920, to the late Augustus and Effie Bagwell Smith. A veteran of World War II, Smith served with the U.S. Army Air Force in Italy and Germany. He was a member and former deacon of the Friendship Baptist Church in Rome, and retired from the General Electric Company in Rome in 1983. In addition to his parents, his wife, Syble Locklear; his son, Jeffery Earl Smith and his twin brother, Carl Smith, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca B. Smith; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Joyce Freeman of Cave Spring; two stepsons, Leonard Buffington of Cedartown, and Gene Buffington of Rome, one cousin and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 1, at 2 p.m. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Ash officiated. Internment followed at East View Cemetery. Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legions provided full military honors. Pallbearers included Charles Nichols, J. W. Watson, Jeff Freeman, Timmy Hall, Wayne "Bubba" Christian Jr. and Lum Irvin. John House’s Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
