Mr. Jay T. Yancey
Mr. Jay T. Yancey age 87 of the Aragon/Taylorsville area, passed away Tuesday April 11, 2006.
Mr. Yancey was born September 27, 1918 in Cedartown, GA, son of the late Augusta Kathleen Philpot Yancey, and the late Jay T. Yancey, Sr. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mrs. Jolly Sue Abernathy Yancey.
Mr. Yancey was a Special Services Officer in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Captain. He served in WWII from June 9, 1943 to April 17, 1946, where he was stationed on the island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands, the thousand mile chain of islands northwest of Alaska in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre. He also served in the Korean War era from October 5, 1950 to March 11, 1952 in Germany, where he developed a love for photography.
Mr. Yancey was a member of the First Methodist Church of Rockmart, where he also enjoyed being a member of the Grogan/Black Sunday School Class. He was honored recently as the oldest surviving charter member of the Rockmart-Polk County Rotary Club, and was also a member of the Polk County Farmers Club.
Mr. Yancey is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eunice Duffey Yancey, to whom he was married on April 14, 1967. Mrs. Yancey was formerly of Rome and married to the late Jack L. McGinnis, Sr. Since 1967, Mr. & Mrs. Yancey have lived in a lovely turn-of-the century home on a beautiful farm on Sewell Road in Polk County in the Aragon/Taylorsville area, where Mr. Yancey has resided since 1952. It was here that he grew cotton, corn, raised hogs, cattle, and then planted and maintained pine timber.
Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean & Tony Coalson, and Judi & David Jackson, all of Rockmart; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jack & Betts McGinnis of Duluth, Daniel & Katherine McGinnis of Rome, David & Judy McGinnis of Marietta, and Tim & Connie McGinnis of Aragon; a sister, Mrs. Lois White of Rome; two nieces, Suzanne White Sella & her husband David of Oxford, NC, and Celeste White Becker and her husband Bob of Covington, GA; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren also survive.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening between the hours of 7 and 9 PM.
Funeral services for Mr. Yancey will be held on Saturday, April 15th at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Rockmart, with Rev. Carol Cook and Rev. David Autry officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of Rose Hill Cemetery.
The following grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Andrew Hunter McGinnis, Jay Christian Gordon, John Daniel McGinnis, Matthew Douglas Gordon, Jordan David Jackson, Joseph Trent McGinnis, and Casey Lee McGinnis. Honorary pallbearers serving are Mr. Yancey’s five year old grandson, Jay Carlisle McGinnis, along with Tony Coalson, David Jackson, Fred Blair, Steve Blair, Sonny Ewing, John Allen Robins, Harl Duffey, Jr., Jim Duffey, Joel Jackson, David Sella, and Bob Becker.
