Mrs. S. W. Kirton, At Rockmart the electrical storm proved fatal, and a
prominent lady, Mrs. S. W. Kirton, was killed instantly and horribly. She
had just stepped to the window to lower the sash, when a bolt struck the
house, leaping to her person, and burned her clothing off and mutilated the
body badly. Rome and Cave Spring suffered quite a deal by the storm in
broken windows, unroofed houses, the destruction of shade trees and damage
to property generally. Seldom has there been a more terrific rain for the
time, or more destructive hail in this entire section and the losses will
run up into the thousands. The fatalities to life and limb were unusual, and
the part played by lightning in the list of casualties was unprecedented.

Henry County Weekly, May 9, 1902: In Memoriam: On Sunday Apr 6, 1902 the spirit of Mrs. Louella Knight took its everlasting flight from this world & weaned its way into The great Beyond. She was the daughter of Uncle Billy Miller of Ola and was united in marriage to J.H. Knight 26 years ago. Her death occurred at the home of her husband in Polk County after a short illness of only a few days. She leaves a husband and several children one of whom is an infant of only six months who has been left to the tender care of her brother, Mr. Frank Miller, at Ola to mourn her death.
She bore her afflictions without murmuring & was perfectly submissive to the will of her Maker & just before she breathed her last she sang that sweet song "Asleep in Jesus" and peacefully died in the full triumph of Christian faith. The following line were beautifully inscribed to her memory by her husband J. H. Knight who survives her.
Louella is now in the cold silent grave & soon we all be in ours & now we can only grieve for her and strewn her grave with flowers. But the cord of love around my heart which she entwined when I was young can never never tear apart for God hath made our hearts as one. I can see her smiling face no more, Never hear that sweet voice again, but I know her spirit is at rest & her body free from pain. She silently and meekly bore her ills, for on her maker she relied, Seemed tho content though suffered much & calmly & peacefully she died. Yet while her suffering was very great, her baby she would fondly embrace, she calmly bowed to her Maker's will & died with a smile on her face. Twenty-six long years ago we launched our boats on life's stormy ways & in my memory she will ever live until I too am in the grave. And oh God to thee I humbly pray that knowledge to me be given, That I again Louella may see and know her up in Heaven. To this little infant babe he inscribed the following lines: Pauline my darling babe to the realm my heart you have spun, cords of love so tightly woven that can never be undone for a Mother's love is the only love that is sincere, lasting and true & none but God who rules above knows what a mother can endure. A friend.
