Pulaski
County was named for Casimir Pulaski, a
Polish Count. While
in Paris, Benjamin Franklin enlisted,
Casimir Pulaski in the American cause for
Independence. Having been persecuted in his
own native Poland, and himself an exile in
France, was eager to aide in the war against
England. Count, Pulaski joined George
Washington's army just before the battle of
Brandywine.
Casimir earned a commission as brigadier
general and command of all American
cavalry. He is known today as the "Father
of American Calvary." Pulaski's Legion
became the training ground for American
cavalry officers including "Light Horse"
Harry Lee, the father of Robert E. Lee., He
was wounded by a cannon ball while trying to
retake Savannah. He died on board ship
near Savannah two days later and was buried
at sea. |
