Henry L. C. Knighton

Contributed by Celie Knighton O'Rourke

Henry Locolen Crumbley Knighton was born 29 April 1886 in Lumpkin Georgia. He was named after Locolen Crumbley, whom Henry always called the "Billy Graham" of his day.He was the son of William Edward (Eddie) Knighton and his wife Angeline Ellen Tucker (Angie).

Raised in Randolph Co., GA, Henry did not "take to farming". As a young man, Henry ventured elsewhere. In 1909, Henry had joined his married sister (Tisha Boggs) in Columbus GA. It was here that he met his future wife, Alberta Hodges while on a blind date. They married in April 1909. Henry would eventually settle in the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Henry and Alberta bought a house in Norfolk. Henry later added a second story addition, then built a cottage next door. He would live the rest of his life in the house that he built, passing away in July 1966.

He became a sheet metal worker at the Naval base there. He developed a hand clamp machine which he gave to the government.

Father of three surviving children ( Bessie Marie, Marian Lucille, and Henry Carter) Henry was a soft spoken, kind man, serving as Deacon in his church for many years, a good Christian. He was a wonderful story teller, spending many hours telling his grandchildren of his life in Randolph Co., and the many pranks he would pull on his uncles and cousins in Randolph Co. He never forgot his roots and made many visits back to the land of his birth.

Henry and Alberta (1890-1959) were laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the city of Norfolk, VA.
