Macon?. Nov 2?, 1847
Dear Father,
This will inform you that I arrived in Macon this morning with a load of cotton. That was my only business. I shall leave this evening or tomorow. For home again- I and family are in the enjoyment of good health and hope these few lines may find you and family the same. I have not had the pleasure of hearing from you and family since I left your house - nothing would offer us more pleasure than to hear from you- I sent my son John to see your son and family and they were all well. I have purchased a settlement of land three miles from Cuthbert Randolph County Georgia- I bought it from Abner Griffin- It is a good settlement of land and I had to pay $1600 for it. I wish you would write me and let me hear how you all are especially my two daughters. Write to Brooksville Randolph Co.
My cotton crop is short and if your cotton crop should turn out better than you exspected you must try and help me to raise a little money to pay for my land.
Forever your son.

Letter from N.R. (Nathaniel Raines) Brown Honalulu 20 years old to Bill Hay-
-in Part..
You think that I would know know the place if I were to come back there. I wonder if you think that I would not know you. I do not think there is a house in town that was there when I first knew the place. I know the present court-house is the third one that has been there since my first knowledge of Cuthbert. What do you think of that? The first Cuthbert was over at the Spring just the other side of the Gorley house from town. Your letter says that I would not kow that place where an old woman used to sell cakes and beer when I was a boy-that was before you were born. William H. Cuthbert lived over there at thefirst Cuthbert. This is where the town got its name from. That was when there was not a house on the road between uthbert and Benevolence and no cleared land, only one or two little patches and they were not cleared to the road. You you cannon get out of sight of a house.
Well Bill, they had decoration day on the last of May. I watche the parade pass and went home and got my lunch and boarded the cars for the beach. I looked around for you but did not see you, so I had to be out there by myself with a big crowd all in bathing. Men and woman, boys and girls from first years to grey-h4eads. You ought ot have been there to see all the different kinds of bathing suits they had on. There were tall ones, low ones, big ones, little ones, fat ones and lean ones. I noticed one that -was very fleshy. I think she was a 200 pounder more or less. Now Bill, I think you would enjoy a circus like that--- Yours as ever N R Brown
