I have information on the Holcombe family from 1075 to those that lived
in Griffin from 1920 until 1977. The last Holcomb to live there was my
Great Uncle Woodrow Columbus Holcombe. (Woodrow added the e back on
Holcomb/e.) He worked with the Griffin Police force, at one time living in
the jail with his wife cooking for those incarcerated. (The story about the
monkey they had while living at the jail is hilarious!) By the end of his
career he served as Chief of Security of the Griffin-Spalding School System.
He was very involved with children, supporting the Safety Patrol
organization in Griffin and taking a group of Patrols to Washington, DC,
several times. Griffin held a "Woodrow Holcombe Day" parade at one time in
honor of his service. He and wife Irma, had only one child, Barry Rhodes
Holcombe, that graduated from Griffin H.S. (about 1957), where Barry was the
Drum Major for the band. They were members of The Second Baptist Church in
Griffin.
Woodrow died in 1977 and is buried in the Holcomb family plot in Oak
Hill near his father whose obituary was recently posted.
What type of Holcomb information would you like for your site?
Also, I have several photos of Griffin people from my Great Aunt Mamie
Holcomb Huff's collection. One is of her husband, Walter, in a group photo
with his working buddies at a roller shop (textile related) 1930s. I have
identified only one other person in the group. There were several Couch
children photos who were neighbors to Mamie.
Our family is wanting to hold another Holcomb reunion, our third, and I
think we might do this in Griffin this year.
I would like to know more about the Powell shoe shop at which Joshua
Thompson Holcomb and some of his sons worked.
