Mrs. Effie Ragsdale Passes in Atlanta
Mrs. Effie L. Ragsdale, 47, died at her home in Atlanta Saturday
night at 7 o'clock. The body was brought to Griffin Saturday
night and funeral services were held from Midway Methodist church
Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Mr. Norton, Sr., officiated.
Burial was in the church yard with Haisten Brothers, funeral
directors, in charge.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. D. L. Partain, Thomaston;
and Miss Ethel Ragsdale, Atlanta; two sons, Will Ragsdale, Thomaston,
and Edd Ragsdale, Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Roebuck, Atlanta
and Mrs. Ida Elrod, Anderson, S. C.; and four brothers, C. W.
Bailey, Thomaston; J. D. Bailey, Atlanta; W. J. Bailey, Birmingham,
and T. H. Bailey, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Prominent Pike Farmer Passes Silas Sylvester Coggin, on of the
most prominent farmers of Pike County, died suddenly at his home
about four miles west of Williamson Sunday morning at 7 o'clock.
He had been ill for several days, but after eating a hearty breakfast
early Sunday morning expressed himself as feeling better than
he had for sometime, but in a few minutes dropped dead.
Mr. Coggin is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ora Ridley, of
Williamson, and Mrs. Annie Pryor, of Griffin; one son, Andrew
Coggin of illiamson; one brother, Josephus Coggin, of Hollonville.
Funeral Services for Mr. Coggin were held from his late residence
Monday afternoon at 3 O'clock. Rev. D. A. Bindle, of Griffin
officiated. Burial
was in the Coggin Cemetery, with Haisten Brothers in charge.

Burial was in Mt. Zion cemetary near Zetella, with Haisten Brothers, funeral directors, in charge. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Sara, Mattie, and Rebecca, two brothers, James and DeWitt, two half-brothers, Grady and L. G., and two half-sisters, Lillian and Lois.

33, died at her home, 521 Bell street, Monday morning at 8 o.clock,

M. E. Odom, she is survived by one brother, J. J. Johnson, of
Griffin, and three half-sisters, Mrs. A. B. Kendall, and Mrs.
J. A. Bostwick, of Atlanta, and Miss Estelle Odom, of Griffin.
Funeral services will be held from the home Monday night at 7
o'clock.
Rev. J. A. Drewry will officiate. Burial will be in the Union
City cemetery in Cambless Tuesday morning, with Haisten Brothers,

Concord Man is Killed As Car Is Overturned CONCORD, Ga.,
Sept. 1. -- R. Bryce Crawford, of this city, was killed last
night about ten o'clock when an automobile in which he was riding
was overturned on the highway just north of Molena. He had been
to Molena to see a dentist and in company with J. C. Irvin, Jr.,
was returning home driving a light touring car.
The car was defective some way and steered with difficulty and
at a point where the road is crooked, narrow and with deep ditches
on either side he lost control and the car turned over on him,
the body pinning his neck tightly to the ground. Mr. Irwin, who
was slightly injured, tried to relieve Mr. Crawford, but the
car was jammed in the ditch and he was unable to do so. Before
he could get help and lift the car the unfortunate victim was
dead of strangulation.
Mr. Crawford lost his wife only a few weeks ago and his passing
now leaves a young son and daughter bereft of both parents in
a brief time.

BELOVED GRIFFIN LADY SUCCUMBS TO LONG ILLNESS
Miss Sarah Seagraves, well-known and beloved Griffin woman, died
at the home of her nieces, Misses Blanche and Myrtice Bailey,
on E. College street at an early hour Saturday morning following
a long illness.
Miss Seagraves has made her home in Griffin for the most of her
life and was genuinely beloved and admired by a wide circle of
friends who regret her passing.
In addition to her nieces, she is survived by one sister, Mrs.
L. S. Bailey, of Griffin, and one nephew Earl Bailey, of Atlanta.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock
from the home of her nieces, Misses Bailey. The Rev. A. M. Pierce,
of Atlanta, will officiate assisted by Rev. John F. Yarbrough,
of Griffin, and interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery with Frank
S. Pittman as funeral director in charge.
The following gentlemen will act as pall-bearers: W. H. Barnes,
Kelley Wilson, P. Y. Luther, H. B. Montgomery, J. W. Slade, and
Dr. T. I. Hawkins.

LAMAR CITIZEN DIES James Mason Williams, 59, a prominent
citizen of Lamar county, died at his home at Milner Friday morning
at 11 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. E. L. Crane,
of Zebulon; and Mrs. A. L. Magahee, of Griffin; two sons, J.
D. and J. C. Williams, also of Griffin.
Funeral services were held from Bethel church near Milner Saturday
morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. J. O. Buffington officiated. Burial
was in the churchyard with Haisten Brothers in charge.

William Blissett, a prominent farmer of Spalding county, died at his home on the Sisth street road Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the advanced age of 79. He had been ill for several months and has been confined to his bed for the past four weeks. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Blissett, is the only survivor. Funeral services were held from the graveside in the Maddox cemetery Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev J. G. Lupo officiated. Haisten Brothers, funeral directors, in charge.

WM. J. LANGFORD YIELDS TO DEATH
Wm. J. Langford, 76, died at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. G. W. Reid, at 205 E. Broad street, Sunday afternoon at
1:20 o'clock after a long illness. He had been in failing health
for several months. Last week he was taken seriously ill and
had been confined to his bed for several days. Mr. Langford was
well-known here, where he spent the greater part of his life,
and the community at large will be grieved to hear of his passing.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Fannie Sears Langford, he is survived
by two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Sears, Lennox, Ga., and Mrs. G.
W. Ried, two sons, W. K. Langford, Orange Mill, Fla., and E.
J. Langford, Jacksonville, Fla.
Funeral services will be held from his late home Tuesday morning
at 10:00 o'clock. Rev. John F. Yarbrough and Rev. Leon M. Latimer
will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery with Haisten
Brothers in charge. Meridian Sun Lodge F. A. A. M. will have
charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. J. W. Rodgers, Goes to Reward
John W. Rodgers, employee of the Georgia-Kincaid Mills
in East Griffin, died suddenly Monday morning. He was stricken
while at his work and carried to his home. He had passed away
before medical attention reached him. Mr. Rodgers was 67 years
of age. He moved here about three years ago from Monroe County
and had made many friends throughout the city.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rebecca Rodgers; one daughter,
Mrs. J. P. Crews of Experiment; five sons, L. L. Rodgers, of
Forsyth, J. S. Rodgers, of Experiment; E. G. Rodgers of Bolingreen,
Fla., W. P. Rodgers and J. P. Rodgers, of Griffin.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Haisten Brothers.

Funeral Held for J. W. Rodgers
Funeral Services for John W. Rodgers, who died very suddenly
at his home this evening at 7:30 o'clock. Rev. J. C. Sorrow will
officiate. Interment will be made tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
in Rogers cemetery in Monroe County. Funeral party will leave
the residence at 9 o'clock.
Mr. Rodgers was a valued employee of the Georgia-Kincaid Mills
and has made his home in Griffin for the past four years. During
his stay in Griffin he has made countless friends who are grieved
to hear of his sudden passing.

Saturday, September 24, 1938, GEORGE FRANK KEMPSON,
Mr. G. F. Kempson, 32, prominent Senoia business man died
a t St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta, GA, Friday night. (September
23, 1938) Mr. Kempson had been sick but two days and was carried
to the Hospital for an operation.
He was born and reared in Coweta county and had been a resident
of Senoia for many years. He was a cotton warehouseman being
associated with C. C. McKnight Co.
Mr. Kempson was a member of the Senoia Methodist Church and was
associated with all the civic movement in Senoia. he was the
son of the late J. Albert Kempson and Minnie Scott Kempson.
The Funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Senoia
Methodist Church. Rev. N. O. Powell the pastor. Interment Senoia
City Cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his widow Mrs Nina Couch Kempson,
a sister Miss Dorothy Kempson, and a brother Julian Kempson of

Mr. Samuel T. Jones Died Monday Night
Mr. Samuel T. Jones, 61, died at his home, near Brooks,
Monday night at 7:30 after a lingering illness. He was the son
of the late Sam Jones and Mary Beers Jones and had made his home
in the Brooks community practically all his life.
Mr. Jones, a prominent farmer in that vicinity, had taken a very
active part in the affairs of the county until ill health compelled
his retirement about a year ago. He was the brother of the late
Mrs. Sally Jones Dupree who died in the same house near Brooks
last week. He was born and reared in Fayette County.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon
from Whitewater Baptist Church in Fayette County. Rev. T. W.
Holbrook and the Rev. George Britt will officiate. Internment
will be in Whitewater Baptist Churchyard.
Survivors of Mr. Jones are one brother, J. C. Jones, Senoia;
and two sisters, Mrs. N. D. Huckaby and Mrs. Ida Shivers, both
of Brooks, GA.

J. L. RODGERS TRAINS AT MICHIGAN COLLEGE
East Lansing, Mich. Aviation student John Lamar Ernest
Rodgers, son of Mrs J. S. (John Sam) Rodgers, Route A, Griffin,
GA, has arrived at the 310th College Training Detachment (air
crew) located on the campus of Michigan State College, East Lansing,
Michigan.
He will undergo a course of Army Air force instruction lasting
approximately five months prior to his appointment as an Aviation
Cadet. Upon completion of the course, Aviation Student Rodgers
will go on to school for the Flying Training Command for training
as a pilot navigator or bombardier.

by Congressman Sidney Camp and will stand his examinations at
once.
Young Kelley, graduate of Griffin High, is now attending Emory

JAMES H. KELLEY IS NOW A SERGENT,
Boisy, Idaho. James H. Kelley, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clifford A. Kelley, of Brooks, has just been promoted from Corporal to Sergeant, according to the word received from Gowen Field, Idaho, where he is stationed. Sgt. Kelley, who before he entered the service Feb. 17, 1943, was employed as a weaver in the Highland Mills at Griffin, Georgia, is now classified as an aerial gunner on one of the B 24 bombers at the Idaho air base.

Mr. B. R. Pollard Dies At Brooks
Mr. Banard Ralph Pollard, 35, died early this morning at
his home near Brooks, after an illness of five months.
Mr. Pollard was born an reared in Fayette County. He was the
son of the late Neal A. Pollard and Annie C. Norton Pollard.
He was employed at Dundee Mills until the time of his illness.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sara Huckaby Pollard, three sons,
Ralph, Edward and Frank Pollard; one daughter, Mary Alice Pollard;
mother Mrs. Annie Pollard; five sisters, Mrs. Sam Cobb, Brooks,

Saturday, July 27, 1946, MOLLY (MARY T.) GRAY HUTCHINSON,
Mrs. Molly Gray Hutchinson, 84, lifelong resident of Haralson,
died at her home there early this morning. She was the widow
of the late John Wilbon Hutchinson. She was the mother of H.
G. Hutchinson of Griffin.
Mrs. Hutchinson was born in Haralson District of Coweta County
on December 23, 1861. Her parents were Hosea Gray and Susan Kempson
Gray. They were pioneers of Coweta County.
Mrs. Hutchinson had been in good health in spite of her advanced
age and was sick only a week before she died.
Services will be held Sunday afternoon 3 P. M. from the Haralson
Methodist Church of which she was a devoted member. Services
will be conducted by her son, the Rev. Alva Roy Hutchinson of
New York, assisted by the Rev. J. N. Hearn, Pastor of the Haralson
Methodist Church. The remains will be in state at the church
one hour prior to the funeral. Internment will be in the church
yard with Haisten Brothers in charge of arrangements.
Grandsons of Mrs. Hutchinson will act as pallbearers.

Mr. N. D. Huckaby of Brooks Dies.
Mr. Noah D. (Doc) Huckaby, prominent Fayette County farmer,
died Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at his home near Brooks.
Mr. Huckaby, 71 years old, was a trustee of the Brooks Methodist
Church and was for many years a member of the Board of Stewards.
He service on the Democratic Executive Committee of Fayette county
and on the Board of Tax assessors of the county. For approximately
40 years he was Brooks correspondent for the Griffin Daily News.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alice Jones Huckaby; five daughters,
Mrs. Gladys H. Arnold, Mrs. Sara Pollard, Mrs. Rosa Jones, Miss
Maybell Huckaby, all of Brooks, and Mrs. Alberta Hand of Fayetteville;
three sons, Walter H. Huckaby of Brooks, Mr. Clark Huckaby of
Eatonton, and Rev. Worth Huckaby of Griffin; one sister Mrs.
W. M. Turner of Brooks, two brothers, Al Huckaby of Covington
and O. R. Huckaby of Hampton.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at
the Brooks Methodist church. The Rev. R. E. Whatley, pastor,
will officiate. He will be assisted by the Rev. Paul A. Turner,
district superintendent. Burial will be in Whitewater Baptist
Cemetery. Haisten Brothers are in charge of arrangements.
The following will serve as pallbearers, W. C. Putman, C. L.
Starr, C. D. Redwine, W. L. Burch, R. H. Huddleston, and N. W.

Mrs Julia Mae Hemphill Brandenburg, wife of H. L. Brandenburg
died at the home in Gay Tuesday night.
She was born and reared in Spalding County and was the daughter
of the late Rev. W. P. Hemphill and the late Mrs Amanda Josephine
Smarr Hemphill. She was a member of the Methodist church. She
had been married for 51 years and moved to Meriwether County
in 1896. She had been in poor health for a number of months and
had been confined to bed since July.
Funeral services will be at Gay Methodist Church this afternoon
at 3 o'clock. The Rev N. O. L. Powell, the Rev. J. H. Couch,
and the Rev. E. B. Parish will be officiating. Burial will be
in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin with Haisten Brothers in charge.
Pallbearers will be E. B. Estes, R. N. Estes, J. L. Gay, James
L. Caldwell, L. O. Hutchinson, R U. Freeman, Philip Mann and
Harvey Estes.
Survivors in addition to her husband are a daughter, Miss. Josephine

Mrs. Crews Dies Today
Mrs. Willie Mattie Crews, wife of J. P. Crews of Experiment,
died in a Rome hospital early this morning following a brief
illness. Mrs. Crews is survived by her husband, three sons, Terry
Crews of Piedmont, Ala., Alvin Crews of Sylachauga, Ala., and
Hugh Crews of Griffin; five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Kelley, Mrs.
W. D. Shivers, Mrs. Frank Shivers, all of Griffin, Mrs. T. W.
Boyd of LaGrange, and Mrs. A. J. Jordan of Augusta; five brothers,
Sam Rodgers, Preston Rodgers, Guy Rodgers, and J. P. Rodgers,
all of Griffin, and Lee Rodgers of Forsyth, 20 grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the
East Griffin Congregational Holiness Church with the Rev. Lee
Waldon, Pastor, and the Rev. J. J. Stephen's officiating.

Mr. Hugh Harrison Johnson, 71, prominent farmer of Coweta
County died at his home near Haralson early this morning following
a heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday at the Haralson
Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Lamb officiating. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nell Hutchinson Johnson, one
son, Wilbur Lewis Johnson of the University of Georgia, Athens,
two daughters, Mrs. Mary McNair of Sanford, NC, Mrs. Faye Lewis
of Morganton, NC, and one grandson, several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother-in-law of Homer G. Hutchinson of Griffin.

Rev. Crews' Rites Planned
The Rev. Joseph Pickens Crews, 67, died at the Griffin-Spalding
County hospital yesterday afternoon where he had been a patient
for several days.
Rev. Crews made his home at 14 Chestnut Street, Experiment, and
until his retirement three years ago, had been employed at Dundee
Mills. He was a member of the East Griffin Congregational Holiness
Church and had made his home in the community since 1906.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock
at the East Griffin Congregational Holiness Church. The Rev.
Fred Cox and the Rev. Watson Sorrow will officiate and burial
will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. T. W. Boyd, LaGrange,
Mrs. J. B. Kelley, College Park, Mrs. A. J. Jordan, Augusta,
Mrs. W. D. Shivers, Experiment, Mrs. Frank Shivers, Griffin,

Mr. Bennett Dies Today
Mr. A. Hill Bennett, lifelong resident of Spalding County, died around 9 o'clock this morning at his home on the Jackson road.
While he had been ill for a few days, his death was unexpected.
He was a well known Spalding County farmer. He was a member of
the First Baptist Church and the Warren Lodge No. 20 of Oddfellows.
Mr. Bennett was the son of the late Mr. Samuel A. Bennett, and
the late Mrs. Caroline Grubbs Bennett.
He is survived by two brothers, W. D. Bennett, Molena, and A.
C. Bennett, Griffin; three sisters, Mrs. W. S. Forrest, Saluda,
N. C.; Mrs. John T. Banks, Sr., Griffin, Miss Mayme Bennett,
Griffin, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Rehoboth
Baptist Church at 4 o'clock with the Rev. J. M. Rawls officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at Haisten's Funeral Home until the funeral
tomorrow.

Mr. John Powell Thaxton, 64, died at his home on East McIntosh
road yesterday afternoon. He was a resident of Griffin for the
past 30 years. He had worked as a carpenter while living here.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock
at the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. G. W. Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery with McDonald Funeral Home
in charge of arrangements.
The body will lie in state an hour before funeral at the church.

Mr. Varnell S. Slaughter, 64, of Brooks, Ga., died at Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital yesterday at noon. He had been in declining health
for about a year. Prior to his illness, he was engaged in farming.
He was born and reared in Adairsville, Ga., and move to Fayette
county 15 years ago from Columbus, Ga. He was a member of the
Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock
at the Whitewater Baptist Church near Brooks. The Rev. Eddie
Morgan will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susie Chambley Slaughter, one
son, Roy Varnell Slaughter, Brooks, five brothers, George Slaughter,
Columbus, Cleve Slaughter, Atlanta, Claude Slaughter and Willard
Gordon Slaughter of Columbus, two sisters, Mrs. Lelia Floyd of

Mrs. Lizzie Bowen Dunn, widow of the late Mr. John Wesley
Dunn, died Sunday morning at her home at Jolly, Ga. She was born
and reared in Meriwether County and had been a resident of Pike
County for 50 years.
Mrs. Dunn had been in unusually good health until about 10 days
ago when she became ill. She was a member of the Concord Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the
Concord Baptist Church. Rev. M. J. Ramey officiated and burial
was in the Hale cemetery at Jolly.
Mrs. Dunn is survived by three sons, M. L. Dunn, Zebulon, C.
E. Dunn, Sr., Albany, R. C. Dunn, Atlanta, one daughter, Mrs.
W. H. Addy, Senoia, one brother, Mrs. H. G. Bowen, Albany, one

years and was a member of Hanlelter Methodist Church.

Mr. Alfred B. (Happy) Smith, 47, died at his home, 417

Mr. Smith suffered a heart attack yesterday at noon and another

He was born in Upson County, the son of the late Samuel O. Smith
and Ruth Whitman Smith. He came to Griffin in 1920 and for the
padt 11 years has been employed by the Griffin Division of the
Thomaston Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Mae Blisitt Smith, one

Confederate's Widow, Mrs. Caldwell, Dies
Mrs. Elizabeth Leveritt Caldwell, widow of the late Mr.
John Wesley Caldwell, who was a Confederate veteran, died yesterday
afternoon at her home at 318 South Eighth street.
She suffered a fall last October and had been confined to her
bed since that time.
|She was born July 13, 1875, in Greene County, Ga., daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. V. T. Leveritt. She made her home in
Newnan, Senoia, and Alvaton for a number of years but for the
past 10 years she had lived in Griffin.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Boynton Chapter
of United Daughters of the Confedercy, the Woman's Club, and
a life honorary member of the Jayceetes.
Mrs. Caldwell was a registered nurse and was in the first graduating
class of Tabernacle Infirmary in Atlanta.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock in Haisten's chapel.
The Rev. Hugh M. Lindsey and the Rev. L. W. Blackwelder will
officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan beside
her husband.
She is survived by one daughter, Miss. Nell Caldwell, teacher
at North Side school; two brothers, W. A. Leveritt, Monticello,
and G. W. Leveritt, Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs. L. P. Turnbull,

Mrs. Mallory Dies At Home,
Mrs. Mary Lee Carden Mallory died at her residence, 521
Lake avenue, yesterday at 4:40 p. m. following an illness of
several months.
Mrs. Mallory was employed by Ruston Mill until ill health forced
her to retire last March. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist
Church and a teacher in the Sunday School department.
Mrs. Mallory was born in Roakoke, Ala., daughter of the late
Mr. George W. Carden and Mrs. Clarisa Ward Carden.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 4 p. m. at the Oak

The Rev. Herbert L. Scott, 74, retired m9inister, died
early this morning at his home at 209 Palace street. He was born
in Screven County and had been living in Griffin for the past
12 years.
He was a member of the West Griffin Congregational Holiness Church.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock
at the West Griffin Holiness Church with the Rev. James Royals
and the Rev. Fred W. Cox officiating. Burial will be in Cedar
Creek churchyard in Abbeville, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lizzie Herndon Scott, four daughters,
Mrs. Floyd Butler and Mrs. Clyde Pimbs, both of Griffin, Mrs.
A. T. Hand, and Mrs. H. L. Fielder, both of Marietta, two sons,
Leroy Scott, Atlanta, Robert G. Scott, Miami, Fla., two sisters,
Mrs. Hattie Pate, Center Hill, Fla., Mrs. Lorenna Jones of Griffin,
one brother, John Scott, Thomaston, Ga., eight grandchildren.

the Jackson Methodist Church with the Rev. H. H. Jones officiating.
Burial will be in the Jackson cemetery.

Mrs. Helms Dies Friday
Mr. Isom William Henry Helms, 64, died in a private hospital
yesterday afternoon following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Helms was born in Pike County and had been a resident of
Fayette County for 37 years. He was a well-known farmer in the
Brooks community and a member of the Fairview Baptist Church
in Line Creek District.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Fairview
Baptist Church with the Rev. G. L. Howard officiating. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cindie Allison Helms, three
sisters, Mrs. Martha Allen, Griffin, Mrs. Emma Garner, Hollonville,
Mrs. Mary Bagwell, Cullman, Alabama, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cauthen Dies at Home
Mrs. Ella Harris Cauthen, 70, wife of W. Dennis Cauthen,
died at her home near Frienship Baptist Church this morning at
7 o'clock. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clay
Harris. She had lived near Griffin all her life.
She had been confined to her bed for the past 17 years and had
been critically ill four weeks. She was a member of the Friendship
Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Alvin Cauthen, Milner,
W. D. Cauthen, Milner; three daughters, Mrs. Wilson Payne, Milner,
Mrs. Marion English, Milner, Mrs. Alton Foster, Griffin; one
sister, Mrs. Fannie Wilson, Milner; six grandchildren, several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at the Friendship Baptist Church
tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 with the Rev. Walker Logan and the
Rev. George Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in the Church
yard.
The body will remain at the Haisten Funeral Home until 10 o'clock
and will be carried to the home. She will lie in state at the
church tomorrow afternoon from 3 o'clock until funeral hour.

Mr. Blackman To Be Buried
Mr. William Tillman Blackman, 67, of 613 West Quilley street, died at the Crawford W. Long Hospital in Atlanta yesterday at 10:30 p. m.
Mr. Blackman was employed by the Griffin Division of the
Thomaston Mills in the twister room. He retired in March of this
year because of ill health. He was born in Talapoosa County,
Ala., and came to Griffin in his early childhood.
Funeral services will be held at Haisten's Chapel at 4 p. m.
tomorrow with the Rev. Carl Peacock officiating. Burial will
be in Oak Hill cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby Vaughn Blackmanl; one daughter,
Mrs. Grace Holt, two grandchildren, Helen and Larry Holt, all

Mr. Raymond Crook, 53, farmer of Rt. Two, Senoia, died

the late Mr. John Crook and the late Mrs. Emaline Kelly Crook.
He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

No. One in the weave room for eight years. He was a Royal Arch
Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge 413.

Jackson County, but had lived in Griffin for the past 45 years.
He was employed by Dundee Mill No. 1 in the weave room.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude McDonald Rodgers; a son
T. Leon Rodgers; three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice McLean, Mrs.

Mrs. Alice Jones Huckaby, 77, widow of the late Noah D.
Huckaby, died at the home of her daughter near Brooks at 12:30
yesterday. She was a life long resident of Fayette County and
a member of the Brooks Methodist Church.
Her death followed an illness of several years and she had been
seriously ill since September.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the
Brooks Methodist Church. The Rev. Roy Fiske and the Rev. J. R.
Thompson officiated. Burial was in the Whitewater Cemetery in
Fayette County with Haisten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by five daughters, Miss Maybelle Huckaby, Mrs.

Mr. Rodgers Dies: Was Vet of War I
Mr. John S. Rodgers died suddenly at his home on Vineyard
Road last night. He was a native of Jackson County, Georgia,
but moved to Griffin 39 years ago. Mr. Rodgers was employed by
Dundee Mills for 37 years. He was a veteran of World War One,
having served with the 42 Division in a machine gun Company in
Germany and France. He was a charter member of the Vineyard Baptist
Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Daisy Pounds Rodgers; two daughters,
Mrs. Joyce Starr of Griffin and Mrs. Roberta Hudgins of Dayton,
Ohio; a son, John L. Rodgers of Griffin; three brothers, L. L.
Rodgers, of Forsyth, Ga., E. G. Rodgers and J. P. Rodgers both
of Griffin and five grandchildren.

Mr. James Cleveland Jones dies in Senoia early Tuesday
night in a private hospital where he had been a patient for the
past six weeks.
A native of Fayette County, he had made his home in Senoia for
46 years. He was a retired farmer and a member of Senoia Methodist
Church. His wife died on March 13 of this year (1958).
Funeral Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from
the Whitewater Baptist Church rear Star's Mill. The Rev. Chester
Burdette and the Rev. Wendell Banks and the Rev. Harold E. Braswell
will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Catherine Couch of
Newnan, and Mrs. Sara Jewell Cox of Woolsey, a son Samuel Jones
of Griffin, seven grand children and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brandenburg Dies At Hospital,
Mr. Howell Cotter Brandenburg, 69, who resided on the Williamson
Road near Griffin, died at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital at 4
o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
He was admitted to the hospital late Monday afternoon suffering
with a heart attack.
A retired farmer and insurance company representative, Mr. Brandenburg
was a native of Coweta County. He was the son of the late Mr.
Rufus K. Brandenburg and the late Mrs. Susan Stewart Brandenburg
of Coweta County.
A veteran of World War One (WWI) Mr. Brandenburg served in France.
He was a mason, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and
the Haralson Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
In 1940 he was appointed chairman of the U. S. Census for the
Fourth Congressional district.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock

Mr. Emmett L. Crews, 77, of 224 West Cherry Street, died
Wednesday night in a hospital where he had been a patient for
several years.
He was a native of Douglas County.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs Clarence Bonner of Griffin;
two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, among them the
Rev. Terry Crews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o'clock
from Haisten's Chapel. The Rev. T. B. Hoard will officiate. Burial
will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The body will remain at Haisten Funeral Home until the funeral

Mr. Thomas J. Biles, 91, affectionately known as Uncle
Tom, of the Rehobeth Community of Spalding County died at 11:20
Thursday night at the Griffin Spalding County Hospital where
he had been a patient for a week.
A life long resident of Spalding County, he was born April 3,
1870. His wife the late Mrs. Nannie Willis Biles died April 6,
1945. At the time of her death they had been married 54 1/2 years.
Mr. Biles was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church for 75 years.
He was ordained a deacon of the church at the age of 33. He helped
build the present building and Sunday School rooms. He served
as Sunday School superintendent , Adult Bible School teacher,
and choirister for the church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Preston Sanders of Comer,
GA, and Mrs. Bertha Alexander of Griffin; three sons, Willis
Biles of Griffin, Homer Biles of Decatur, and Franklin Biles
of East Point; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Futual and Mrs. Fred Goddard
both of Griffin; eleven children (probably should be grand children];
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon at 3:30 at Rehobeth
Baptist Church. The Rev. H. P. McDonald will officiate. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be carried to the church 30 minutes before the
funeral hour.

Mr Kelley Dies Today,
Mr. Horace Stanley Kelley, 62, of Ellis Road, Route three,
Griffin, died at 1:30 A. M. this morning at the Griffin Spalding
Hospital where he was admitted late Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Kelley had been in declining health for two years and seriously
ill recently. Until illness forced him to retire, he operated
the Kelley Glass Company. While he was born in Haralson, GA,
Coweta County, he was reared in Brooks, GA, in Fayette County.
His parents were the late John Harrison Kelley and the late Lidia
Ann Brandenburg Kelley. Mr. Kelley came to Griffin to make his
home in 1926. He was a member and a former chairman of the Henleither
Methodist Church and was chairman of the building committee when
the present sanctuary was built several years ago. He was a member
of the Griffin Lodge No. 413 of Mason and the T. W. Mitchell
Camp of the Woodsman of the World.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucille Berry Kelley; son and
daughter, Capt. and Mrs Horace S. Kelley, Jr. of Bowie, MD; two
grand children, Stanley Kelley and John Kelley of Bowie, MD;
two sisters, Mrs. C. H. Scarbrough of Augusta and Miss. Betty
Kelley of Brooks; five brothers, W. R. Kelley, Clifford Kelley
of Brooks, the Rev. J. K. Kelley, C. Homer Kelley of Griffin,
and John H. Kelley of Centre, Ala.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock
from the Henleither Methodist Church. The Rev. Alfred L. Key
will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Members
of the official board and members of the Men's Bible Class of
Henleither Methodist Church will serve as honorary escorts at
the funeral. Mr. Kelley 's body will lie in state 30 minutes
prior to the funeral. His body is at Haisten Funeral Home.

Mrs. James Butler Moody, Sr., died at his home at Digby
early this morning. He had been in ill health for several years
but his death came unexpectedly.
He was born in Fayette County, Georgia, the son of the late James
Wilson Moody and the late Frances Herdon Moody. Mr. Moody was
a member of the County Line Christian Church in Digby and at
one time was an elder and a deacon.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Annie Lee Biles Moody; two sons,
James Moody, Jr of Jonesboro; Leeman Moody of Brooks, a sister,
Mrs Bessie Moody Fox of Griffin; a brother, J. J. Moody of Brooks,
and five grand children.
Funeral service for Mr. Moody will be conducted Thursday afternoon
at 3 o'clock from County Line Christian Church in Digby. The
Rev. C. C. Turner will officiate and burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Moody's body remains at Haisten Funeral Home and will be

dead on arrival at the Griffin-Spalding County Hospital. Mr.
Rodgers was under the care of a physician and his death was not
unexpected.
He was a native of Monroe County and had been a resident of Spalding
County for 40 years. Mr. Rodgers was employed at Dundee Mills,
No. Five. He was a member of the Searcy Memorial Methodist Church.
He is survived by his widow Mrs. Louise Goolsby Rodgers; two
sons, Joseph P. Rodgers, Jr., and Edward E. Rodgers; eight grandchildren;
one brother, E. G. Rodgers and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock
from Haisten Chapel with the Rev. S. J. Wheeler officiating.

Mr. Otis O. Biles, 71, died at his home on Cherokee Road,
Friday afternoon at 12:45. Mr. Biles was a retired overseer of
the weave room at Rushton Mills.
Mr. Biles was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. He served
in the U. S. Army prior to World War One and during World War
One he served in the U. S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie Mae Harper Biles; daughter,
Mrs. Richard Granville of Atlanta; two sons, Lawrence Biles and
Roy Biles, both of Griffin; seven grand children; three sisters,
Mrs. Angeline Ferrell of Dallas, Tex, Mrs. Jerry Reid of Fort
Worth, Tex, Mrs. Jack Barth of San Antonio, TX; two brothers,
Albert Biles of Griffin, and Wilber Biles of Montgomery, Ala.
Funeral services will be at Oak Hill Baptist Church Sunday at

Mr. Starr of Pomona Dies,
Mr. Harris Milton (Billy) Starr of Clayton Street, Pomona,
died unexpectedly Saturday at his residence.
He was a life long resident of Spalding County attending Spalding
County Schools and the electronic school in Louisville, KY.
He was a member of the Vineyard Baptist Church and was employed
by the Southern States Equipment Company for the past 16 months.
Mr Starr owned and operated the Starr T. V. & Radio Service.
Survivors included his widow, Mrs. Joyce Rodgers Starr; two sons,
Milton Keith Starr, and Samuel Elder Starr; his mother, Mrs.
Arbella Harris Starr, all of Pomona; and one brother, Merlyn
E. Starr of McDonough.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
from the Vineyard Baptist Church. The Rev. Wiley Virden officiated
and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pittman Rawls Funeral Home

Mr. J. J. Moody, 76, of the Digby Community died early
Sunday morning at his residence. Mr. Moody had been in declining
health for several months and suffered a stroke Saturday night.
He was a lifelong resident of the Digby Community, son of the
late Daniel Wilson Moody and the late Fannie Hearndon Moody.
Mr. Moody had been engaged in farming and was a member of the

Mrs. Effie Mae Thompson Parham. A native of Henry County, he
had lived in Griffin for a number of years and when he retired
15 years ago Mr. Parham was employed at the old Dovedown Hosiery
Mill.
He is survived by a son, George C. Parham; a daughter, Mrs. Warren
Bonner, two grand children one great grand child, all of Griffin,
two brothers, J. D. Parham and Lynn Parham and several nieces
and nephews.

Mrs. James Parigon "J. P." Wilson, 50, died at
the Sylvan Grove Hospital in Jackson, Sunday night after suffering
an apparent heart seizure. Mr. Wilson made his home in Griffin
for most of his life before moving to Jackson recently. He was
a former member of the Palace Street Church of God in Griffin.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Rogers Wilson; two daughters,
Mrs. Donna Drake of Griffin and Miss. Toni Wilson of Jackson;
three sons, J. P. Wilson, Jr., Jerry W. Wilson and Johnny G.,
all of Griffin; a sister, Mrs. Mary Lena McGahee; a brother,
Thomas W. Wilson, both of Griffin; two grand children and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Sherrell Funeral Home
of Jackson.

Funeral services for Mr. James P. Wilson, Sr., 50, of Jackson were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Second Baptist Church in
Jackson. The Rev. A. L. Price and the Rev. James Maders
officiated and burial in the Jackson Cemetery.
Mr. Wilson died Sunday night at the Sylvan Grove Hospital after
suffering a heart seizure.

The Rev. William Rufus Kelley of 132 West Chappell Street
died unexpectedly this morning while shopping at the Big Apple
Super Market. The
Rev. Kelley suffered an apparent heart seizure.
He was born in Cullman, Ala., and had made his home in Spalding
and Fayette Counties for most of his life. He was a Mason and
a member of the
Brooks United Methodist Church. Mr. Kelley was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Borders Kelley, five
daughters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Atlanta, Mrs. Nina Spruill and
Mrs MaryFoster, both
f LaGrange, Mrs Dorothy Baker of Wedowee, Ala., and Mrs. Sue
Kilgore of Griffin, six sons, Samuel Kelley of Baltimore, Md.,
John Thad Kelley of rooks, J. B. Kelley of College Park, Billy
Frank Kelley of Marietta, James Eugene Kelley of Ellenwood, Nathaniel
Kelley of Brooks, two
sisters, Mrs. Love Scarbrough of Augusta, and Miss Elizabeth

Ala., 33 grand children, 20 great grandchildren, and several

will be in the Kelley Family Cemetery at the home place in Brooks.
The body will remain at McDonald Chapel until carried to the
church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.

Miss. Nellie Claire Brandenburg, 71, of Atlanta, died early
Sunday morning at the Georgia Baptist Hospital where she was
admitted a week ago.
Miss. Brandenburg was a native of Pike County. She made her home
near Concord. She was the daughter of Luther Brandenburg and
Lena Strickland. Miss Brandenburg was a member of Friendship
Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock from
the grave side in the Old Hebron Cemetery in Concord. The Rev.
Marion C. Godard officiated. Those desiring may make contributions
to the Heart Fund in memory of Miss. Brandenburg in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Grady W. Biles, 80, of Route One, Brooks, Line Creek
Community of Spalding County, died Tuesday at the Living Center
in Griffin.
Mr. Biles was a lifelong resident of Spalding County and was
engaged in farming until his retirement. He was a member of the
Fairview Baptist Church where he served as deacon and church
clerk. Mr. Biles was a veteran of World War One. He had served
on the Spalding County Board of Education and was a former school
trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Bassett Biles, five daughters,
Mrs. James Yarbrough of Decatur, Mrs. Harry Hunter of Forest
Park, Mrs. J. C. Nixon of Duluth, Mrs. B. E. Conner of Decatur,
and Mrs. Bertril E. Chastain of Brooks; a son, Billy Biles of
Evergreen, Ala.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Dick Slade of Griffin;
two step-sons, Lelan Taylor of Griffin and Scott Prothro of Milner;
14 grand children; 6 great grand children; four sisters, Mrs.
Marjorie Allison of Brooks, Mrs. Ottie Harwell of Williamson,
Mrs. Ellen Shivers of Decatur, and Mrs. Guy Coggins of Miami,
Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o'clock
in the Fairview Baptist Church. The Rev. Richard Fields and the
Rev. Wiley Virden will officiate and burial will be in the church
cemetery. Deacons of the Church and former pastors will serve
as honorary escorts at the funeral. The body will be carried

Monday, June 11, 1973, KATE HUTCHINSON WYATT,
Mrs. Kate Hutchinson Wyatt of 1833 Clifton Road, Atlanta,
widow of Thomas Franklin Wyatt, died at Piedmont Hospital, Saturday
afternoon after a short illness.
Mrs. Wyatt was a retired teacher in the Atlanta Public School
System. A native of Haralson. She was the daughter of the late
George (should be John) Wilborn Hutchinson and the late Mollie
Gray Hutchinson. She was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian
Church in Atlanta.
She is survived by a son, Thomas F. Wyatt, Jr. of Mobile, Ala.;
a grandson, Thomas F. Wyatt, III, of Atlanta, three brothers,
the Rev. Alva R. Hutchinson of Sarasota, FL, Col. A. G. Hutchinson,
U. S. Army (retired) and J. W. Hutchinson, both of Haralson,
four sisters, Mrs. L. S. Burns of Tucker, Mrs. T. V. Odom of
Bradenton, Fl, Mrs. C. K. Cooper and Miss Martha Hutchinson of
Perry.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock from the Haralson United Methodist Church. The Rev. Stann
Bliss will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

medical school.

at Spalding Junior High School of Griffin.

Tuesday, March 12, 1974, ROBERTA RODGERS HUDGINS,
Mrs. Roberta Rodgers Hudgins, of Montgomery, Ala., wife
of Lt. Col. Leon Hudgins, died early Monday morning at the University
Hospital in Birmingham, Ala.
Mrs. Hudgins was a native of Griffin, daughter of the late John
Samuel Rodgers and Mrs. Daisy Pounds Rodgers. She was a graduate
of Spalding High School. Mrs. Hudgins had made her home in Montgomery
for the past seven years.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by four
sons, Andrew Hudgins, Roger Hudgins, Michael Hudgins, and Timothy
Hudgins, all of Montgomery; a sister, Mrs. Joyce Starr; a brother
John L. "Buddy" Rodgers, both of Griffin.
Funeral plans will be announced by Pittman Rawls Funeral Home.

Griffinite killed, two hurt in wreck.
A Griffinite was killed and two others injured in a head on collision
of two vans late yesterday afternoon. The wreck occurred on GA
3 near the Georgia Experiment Station Food Science building and
Lover's Lane around 5:45 P. M.
Steven Lamar Rodgers, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. (Buddy)
Rodgers, one of the drivers, apparently was killed instantly.
His passenger, Milton Kenneth Starr, 18, of Sunnyside, was pinned
in the van for at least 30 minutes and suffered a hip injury,
broken leg, and multiple lacerations.
Larry Williamson, 20, of Route Five, Box 106, who was driving
the other van, suffered a broken arm and leg and hip injuries.
Williamson and Starr were admitted to the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
and were both listed in fair condition there this morning.
According to Griffin police, Rodgers was traveling south on GA
3 when his van crossed the center line and collided with the
Williamson vehicle which was headed north.
Rodgers was thrown from his van which overturned and landed on
top of him, police said.
Starr was trapped in the vehicle, his legs pinned between the
seat and lower front section. Two wreckers had to pry the vehicle
apart to free him.
Hospital ambulance found Williamson lying beside the road.
A Native of Spalding County, Mr. Rodgers was a graduate of Griffin
High School in 1972. He attended Clayton Junior College and was
employed by Cotter and Co. He was a member of the Vineyard Baptist
Church.
In addition to the parents, he is survived by his grandmothers,
Mrs. R. G. Culpepper, Sr., and Mrs. J. S. Rodgers, both of Griffin,
several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock from the chapel of Pittman Rawls Funeral Home. The Rev.
Charles Ivey will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The body will remain at the funeral home.

Friday, October 10, 1975, p. 2, MILDRED BRANDENBURG HOLT,
Mrs. Mildred Brandenburg Holt of Senoia, widow of Mr. Basil
P. Holt, died this morning in Albany, Ga., hospital after an
illness of several months.
Mrs. Holt was a lifelong resident of Senoia, daughter of Mr.
Lovie Pierce Brandenburg and the late Fay Hodnett Brandenburg.
She was employed for several years in the office of the State
Highway Department in Atlanta. Mrs. Holt was a member of the
Senoia United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. M. W. Glenn of Dalton &
Mrs. Frank Bilton of Albany.
The funeral will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in Haisten's Chapel in Griffin. The Rev. Kenneth Dietle will officiate, and burial will be in the Senoia City Cemetery. The body will remain at Haisten Funeral Home.

Mr. Kelley lived in Brooks all his life and was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian McCullough Kelley, 2
daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan of Griffin and Mrs. Helen
Smith of Jonesboro; 3 sons, James Kelley of Smyrna, Norman Kelley
of Brooks, and Harmon Kelley of Huntsville, Ala., 2 sisters,
Mrs. Love Scarborough of Augusta and Miss. Annie Elizabeth Kelley
of Brooks, a brother, John H. Kelley of Centre, Ala.; 11 grand
children; and 4 great grand children.
Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday at 2 P. M. at the Whitewater
Baptist Church with the Rev. Byron Thompson officiating. Burial

Mrs. Vera Knott Biles, 73, of 1026 West Broad Street, died
Wednesday night after an illness of several months.
Mrs. Biles was the wife of Albert F. Biles. She was born in Berry,
Ala., and had made her home here for a long number of years.
She was a charter member of the Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by five sisters,
Mrs. Louise Kimbell, Mrs. Winnie Brown, both of Griffin, Mrs.
Flossie Moore, Mrs. Ruth Horne, both of Port Arthur, Tex., and
Mrs. Gladys Suggs of Montgomery, Ala.

Thursday, December 1, 1977, MAUD ALICE McDONALD RODGERS,
Mrs. Maud McDonald Rodgers, 90, of Route 2, Griffin, died
Wednesday evening [November 30, 1977] at Nursing Home in Jenkinsburg,
where she had been a patient for four months.
Mrs. Rodgers was the widow of Mr. William Preston Rodgers, who
died in 1954. She was a native of McDuffie County.
Survivors include a son, T. Leon Rodgers; three daughters, Mrs.
Beatrice McLean, Mrs. Ruth Wilson, Mrs Grace Bridges, all of
Griffin; fifteen grandchildren, 35 great grand children, and
5 great great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Chapel
of Haisten Funeral Home. The Rev. Graydon Morgan will officiate
and burial will be in Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Sara Haisten Huckaby of Brooks, wife of Walter E.
Huckaby, died Saturday morning at her residence after a lengthy
illness.
Mrs. Huckaby was a life long resident of Fayette county, daughter
of the late Oscar Haisten and the late Bessie Hancock Haisten.
Mrs Huckaby was a member of the Brooks United Methodist Church
where she took an active part in all phases of the church program.
She service as financial secretary, was a member of the Adult
Sunday School Class, and the Women's Society of Christian Service.
Mrs. Huckaby was a member of the Brooks Homemakers Club. the
Thursday Club, and the Fayette County Senior Citizens Group.
Survivors include her husband, two sisters, Miss. Essie Haisten
and Mrs. Tommy Turner; both of Brooks, two nieces, Mrs. Peggy
Bilbo of Brooks, and Mrs. Rebecca Carden of Jonesboro; and a
brother-in-law, the Rev. Worth Huckaby of Griffin. The funeral
was this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Brooks United Methodist
church. The Rev. Jerry Meredith, the Rev. Wayne Younger, and
the Rev. C. J. Mowell officiated and burial war in Whitewater
Baptist Church Cemetery. Haisten Funeral Home of Griffin was

Mr. Edward Neal Pollard, 38, of Roxbury Drive, Riverdale, died Wednesday.
Mr. Pollard was a native of Brooks, and owned his own business
in Mountain View. He was a member of Whitewater Baptist Church
in Brooks. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served
a tour of duty in Thailand.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ann Forsyth Pollard, one daughter,
Martha Denise Pollard, both of Riverdale; two sons, Bobby Pollard
and Billy Pollard, both of Vaughn; his mother, Mrs. Sara Pollard
of Brooks, one brother, Ralph Pollard of Brooks; one sister,
Mrs. Mary Alice Thompson of Barnesville, and several nieces and
nephews.
The funeral for Mr. Pollard was today at 2 P. M. at the Whitewater
Baptist Church of Brooks. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Monday, April 17, 1978, EARLY GUY RODGERS,
Mr. Early Guy Rodgers of 61 Pine Street, Experiment, died Sunday night at his residence.
Mr. Rodgers was born in Jackson County, Georgia, son of
the late John William Rodgers and the late Rebecca Skelton Rodgers.
He has lived in Griffin for 42 years and was the last surviving
charter member of the Central Lake Church of God where he attended
the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Rodgers had served as the church's
clerk and treasurer for nine years. He was a retired employee
of Dundee Mills Number One.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Linda Elizabeth Allen Rodgers;
a daughter, Mrs. Annie Mae Banford of Morrow; a son, Claude Rodgers
of Doraville, four grandchildren, three great grand children,
several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday morning at 11:30 o'clock from the
Central Lake Church of God. The Rev. Walter R. Pettitt, and the
Rev. Walter A. Langdon will officiate and burial will be in Oak
Hill cemetery.
Friends may visit the family at McDonald Chapel from 7 to 9 o'clock
tonight. The body will remain at the Chapel until carried to
the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral. Members of the Men's
Bible Class will serve as honorary pall bearers and active pall
bearers will be Noah Gilleland, Homer Thompson, Sr., Homer Thompson,
Jr., John Stanfield, Kenneth Pritchard and Danny Haney.

Mrs. Dessa Dunn Kelley died early this morning at her residence,
541 South Sixth Street after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Kelley was the widow of Mr. C. Homer Kelley, She was a native
of Fayette County and had resided in Griffin for most of her
life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robert H. Patterson of Griffin,
a son Dr. J. Welbon Kelley of Griffin; a daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Fred Kelley of Greenville S. C.; a brother, A. J. Dunn of Griffin,
ten grand children, and four great grand children.
The funeral will be Friday afternoon at 3:30 in the Chapel of
Haisten Funeral Home. Dr. Bruce Morgan and the Rev. Harwell E.
Kennedy will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Louise Goolsby Rodgers, 72, of 112 Westmoreland Drive,
widow of Mr. Joseph P. Rodgers, Sr., died unexpectedly early
this morning at her residence.
Mrs. Rodgers was a retired employee of Dundee Mill No. Five.
She was a member of East Griffin Baptist Church and was a native
of Thomas County, GA.
Her survivors include two sons, J. P. Rodgers of Griffin and
Edwin E. Rodgers, both of Griffin; three sisters, Mrs. Leona
Lowery, Mrs. Evelyn Pressley of Texas and Mrs. Mary Castleberry
of Griffin; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Goolsby of Houston,
Tex.
The funeral will be Friday afternoon at o'clock in Haisten's
Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. J. M. Wiles and the Rev. Bobby
Burnett will officiate. Burial will be in Griffin Memorial Park.

Mrs. Mary Irene Turner Morris of Williamson, former resident
of Zebulon and lifelong resident of Pike County, died early last
night at the Brightmoor Medical Care Home [Griffin, GA] where
she had been a patient for eight months.
She was a member of the Zebulon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Hazel Jones of Williamson,
Mrs. Alice Kimball of Jackson, Mrs. Betty Gilbert of Rome, Mrs.
Sara McKnight of San Jacinta, Calif., Mrs. Ann Rumbaugh of Torrance,
Calif.; two sons, Wallace Brandenburg of Griffin, and Hewlett
Brandenburg of Rodeo, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Fairy O'Dell
of Griffin, and Mrs. Mattie Turner of Baltimore, MD; twelve grandchildren;
fourteen great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 A. M. in the Chapel of Pittman-Rawls

Mrs. Lillie Mae Bonner of 220 W. Cherry Street, was dead
on arrival at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital last night.
Mrs. Bonner was a life long resident of Spalding County and a
retired employee of Sybill Mill.
Her survivors include her husband, Clarence Bonner; daughter,
Mrs. Ruby May Weaver of Temple, GA; a son, Lynwood Bonner of
Griffin; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be tomorrow at 2 o'clock in McDonald Chapel.
Bishop Terry Crews and the Rev. Alvin Crews will officiate. Burial
will be in Griffin Memorial Park. McDonald Chapel is in charge
of plans.

Mr. John Thad Kelley, 64, of Brooks, died Saturday at his residence after a lengthy illness.
He was a life long residence of Fayette County, son of
the late William Rufus Kelley and the late Rosa Minnie Kelley.
He was a member of the Friendship Congregational Holiness Church.
He was employed at Lowell Bleachery until his retirement in December
of 1979.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vera Allen Kelley; a daughter,
Mrs. Rudene Morris of Norcross; five sons, Thad Howard Kelley,
and Alvin R. Kelley, both of Griffin, Earnest Kelley and Clarence
Kelley, both of Brooks, and Tracy Kelley of Selina, Kansas; 10
grand children, and one great grand child; a stepmother, Elizabeth
Kelley; five sisters, Mrs. Alice Jones of Atlanta, Mrs. Nina
Spruill and Mrs. Mary Foster, both of LaGrange, Mrs. Dot Baker
of Wedowee, Ala., and Mrs Sue Kilgore of Griffin; five brothers,
S. R. Kelley of Baltimore, MD, J. B. Kelley of Griffin; Billy
Kelley of Brooks, Eugene Kelley of Ellenwood, and Nathaniel Kelley
of Birmingham, Ala.
The funeral for Mr. Kelley was conducted this afternoon at 3
o'clock from the Friendship Congregational Holiness Church. The
Rev. Gene Middlebrook, the Rev. Marvin Jimmerson, and the Rev.
Leo Smith officiated. Burial followed in the Kelley Family Cemetery
in Brooks. Haisten Funeral Home was in charge.

About November 17, 1980, THOMAS & LOTTIE BOYD,
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Boyd celebrated their Golden Wedding
Anniversary when their children entertained at a reception in
a beautiful setting at historical Bellevue on the afternoon of
November 17, 1980.
The former Miss. Lottie Crews and Thomas W. Boyd were united
in marriage at the home of the bride's parents, the Rev. and
Mrs. Joe Crews, in Griffin on November 17, 1930, in a ceremony
performed by the Rev. Hugh Bowling.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd have seven children, sixteen grandchildren,
and six great-grandchildren. Hosts for the fiftieth (50) wedding
anniversary reception were Mr. and Mrs. Willie L. Yarbrough of
Phoenix City, Ala., Mr. and Mrs. William P. Boyd, of Smiths,
Ala., Mr. and Mrs. W. Crews Boyd of Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. Tyre
Jiles, Jr., of Douglasville, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hadaway of
Fairfax, Ala., Miss. Kathleen Boyd, and Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Boyd
of LaGrange.
The guest registered at a table placed in the parlor that held
the guest register, a photograph of the honored couple made 50
years ago and an arrangement of yellow Pixie carnations, golden
mums and baby's breath.
Acuba foliage decorated the fireplaces in the reception rooms
and at the Pier mirror was an arrangement of Acuba with two wedding
bands. In the lower band was a miniature bride and groom and
the large top band held a golden "50" and lacelon.
The three-tiered wedding cake topped with yellow roses, yellow
miniature carnations, Gold Button and yellow daisy pons and baby's
breath graced the center of the table in the dining room.
Mrs. Boyd wore for the occasion a dress of champagne quiana and
corsage of yellow cymbidium orchids. Mr. Boyd was presented a
yellow rose boutonniere for his lapel.
Grandchildren of the couple assisting during the reception were
Mrs. Charlotte Arnold and Mrs. Angela Jackson both of Gray, Miss.
Marcia Stone of Columbus, Miss. Kim Boyd and Mrs. Deanna Jordan,
both of Jonesboro, Miss. Susan Hadaway of Fairfax, Ala., and
Mrs. Tam Yarbrough of Phoenix City.

Thomas W. (Red) Boyd, 75, of 804 Elm Street [LaGrange, GA] died Sunday at West Georgia Medical Center.
A native of Butts County, Mr. Boyd had lived here for the
past 43 years and was a retired employee of the Elm City Plant
of Callaway Mills Company. He was a member of the Congregational
Holiness Church and the 25-Year Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lottie Boyd of LaGrange; four
daughters, Mrs. Huldah Yarbrough of Phoenix City, Ala., Mrs.
Lottie Jiles of Douglasville, Mrs. Tommie Lou Hadaway of Riverview,
Ala., and Miss. Kathleen Boyd of LaGrange; three sons, William
P. Boyd of Phoenix City, W. Crews Boyd of Jonesboro and Lamar
Boyd of LaGrange; three sisters, Louise O'Neal of Jackson, Mrs.
Sarah Parr of Mableton and Mrs. Margaret Abernathy of LaGrange;
five brothers, Horace Boyd of Jackson, George Boyd of Atlanta,
J. P. Boyd of Cleveland, Freeman Boyd of Decatur and Wilmer Boyd
of Conyers; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Allen-Myhand
Funeral Home with the Rev. Forest Bateman and Rev. Bobby L. Ford

Mr. John Guye Haisten of 1441 Wesley Drive, Died at his
residence yesterday after an extended illness.
Mr. Haisten was a retired president of Haisten Brothers Funeral
Directors of Griffin, Barnesville,and Jackson. He had been associated
with the firm 58 years.
|Mr. Haisten began his career in funeral services in 1921 after
graduating from high school and receiving his embalming license
in 1923 from the Georgia Funeral Services Board. He later served
a four-year term on that board.
Mr. Haisten was a native of Brooks in Fayette Co. He was born
November 5, 1901, son of the late Isaac Edward Haisten and the
late Eliza Traylor Haisten. He was a member of the first United
Methodist church, where he served for many years on the administrative
board.
Mrs. Haisten had been active for many years in civic and fraternal
affairs, including membership in Griffin Masonic Lodge 413 from
which he had received his 50-year pin, and was a past master;
the Liberty Chapter of the Shrine, and the Griffin Shrine Club;
past noble of the Warren Lodge of Odd Fellows in which he had
served on the degree team which won many awards; Pythagoras Chapter
Number 10 of the Royal Arch Masons; and Griffin Lodge 1503 Loyal
Order of the Moose.
For many years Mr. Haisten enjoyed playing golf and had been
city champion. He had won first and low medalist at many tournaments
throughout Georgia. he was a member of the Griffin County Club.
Mr. Haisten is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bell Haisten;
two daughters, Angeline Hayes of Griffin and Mrs. Claudette Crandall
of Birmingham, Ala.; six grandchildren, John Marvin Montgomery
of Griffin, Mrs. Luanne Montgomery Hubbard of Atlanta, Marilisa
Montgomery of Griffin, Beth Crandall of Tampa, Fla., David and
Bryan Crandall, both of Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Mrs. W.
B. Hammond of Newnan; one brother, Harry C. Haisten of Griffin;
a sister-in-law, Mrs. L. Max Haisten of Griffin; and several.

Mr. Judge Milton Biles of Route two, Griffin, 86, died
this morning at the Living Center of Griffin, where he had been
a patient for the past two years.
Mr. Biles was a retired farmer and was a member of the Rehoboth
Baptist Church.

of Griffin, and Fred Biles of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Joel

Mr. Lewis B. Messer, Sr., 70, of 845 Meriwether Street,

County Hospital. He had been in declining health.
Mr. Messer was a retired employee of Dundee Mill No. 5 and the
City Billiard Parlor. He was a native of Sand Tuck, Ala., and
had lived in Griffin for 35 years.
Mr. Messer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Zelma Dukes Messer;
seven sons, Lewis B. Messer, Jr., U. S. Army in Germany, Jimmy
P. Messer of Orlando, Fla., Wayne Messer, U. S. Army at Fort

Mr. Howard Earnest Biles, 56, of 802 Sunnybrook Drive,
died this morning at Emory University Hospital.

time of his death and had been supervisor for 22 years at Jaco
Knitting Mill. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church.

Mr. Harvey Hill Brandenburg, 101 years of age, of Molena,
and former resident of Concord, died Sunday in the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital.
Mr. Brandenburg was a native of Meriwether County and had been
a resident of Molena for the past four years. Before his retirement
he operated a cash store in Concord and was mayor of Concord
from 1912 to 1935. He was undertaker for R. F. Strickland Company
from 1904 until 1934, and began an undertaker in Greenville.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and served
as Sunday School superintendent for 27 years. Mr. Brandenburg
was a former member of the Woodsman of the World.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Pilkenton Brandenburg of
Molena, GA; his son Harvey H. Brandenburg, Jr. of Englewood,
FL, two grandsons, Reid Brandenburg of Englewood, FL and John
Webb of Sarasota, FL and three great grand children.Funeral services
will be Tuesday at 2 P.M. in
the Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Molena. The Rev. Bob Reynolds,
the Rev. Bob Williams, the Rev. Bob McCombs and the Rev. Hugh
pope will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Concord.

Mr. Cook was a native of Coweta County and had resided in Pike

Mrs. Brandenburg was a native of Pike County. She was the widow
of Harvey H. Brandenburg. She was a member of the Concord Baptist
Church and a former pianist at Mr. Olive Baptist Church.
Mrs. Brandenburg is survived by one stepson, Harvey H. Brandenburg,
Jr. of Englewood, Fla., two step grandsons, Reid Brandenburg
of Englewood and John Webb of Sarasota, Fla.

Mrs. Willie Mae Cook McCollough Turner, 81, died early
this morning at the Heritage Inn Nursing home after an extended
illness. She was a native of Coweta County and has lived in Barnesville
for many years. She was a retired employee of the William Carter
Company, and a member of the Barnesville Chapter Order of the
Eastern Star. She was a member of Calvery Baptist Church.
Mrs. Turner is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and
Billy McDaniel of Barnesville; stepdaughter, Mrs. Maxine Elliott
of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frances McCullough of
Barnesville; three grand children; four great grand children;
four step grand children; four step great grandchildren; three
sisters, Mrs Susie Bell Dickerson of Zebulon, Mrs Dorothy Goins
of Thomaston, and Mrs Irene Gill of The Rock, GA; sister-in-law,
Mrs. Leila Mae Cook of Zebulon.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 P.M. in the Calvary Baptist
Church in Barnesville. The Rev. Horace Sheffield and the Rev.
Franklin Gibson will officiate. Burial will be in Fincher's Cemetery
in Meansville.
The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to
the funeral.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy
McDaniel, 7 Ware Street, Barnesville.

Mrs. Annie Lee Moody, 93, of Route One, Brooks, the Digby
Community, died early Sunday morning at the Brightmoor Medical
Care Home [Griffin, GA]. She was the widow of James Butler Moody.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Spalding County and
a member of County Line Christian Church.
Mrs. Moody is survived by her children, Mr. & Mrs. James
Moody of Jonesboro, and Mr. & Mrs. Leeman Moody of Brooks;
five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs.
J. J. Moody of Brooks, Mrs. Ethel Patton of Williamson, Mrs.
Eula Bettencourt of Atlanta, and Mrs. Evelyn Harrison of Douglasville;
brother, Chester Biles of Griffin.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 A.M. in Haisten's Chapel. The
Rev. George Boswell and the Rev. George Dilliard will officiate.
Burial will be in the County Line Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Willis L. Biles, 91, of 1545 Rehoboth Church Road,
Griffin, died Tuesday at the Veteran's Hospital in Decatur.
He was a native of Spalding county, a veteran of WWI, and a member
of the Ringold Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist
Church where he was a deacon emeritus having service for more
than 50 years.
Mr. Biles is survived by his wife of 65 years. Mrs. Annie B.
Biles, four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Logan, Mrs. Ida Mae Eliis,
and Mrs. Bobbie Norwood, all of Griffin and Mrs. Dorothy Pate
of Chattanooga, Tenn; one son, Joel T. Biles of Augusta; 15 grand
children and 11 great grand children, one brother, Franklin Biles
of East Point,; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services was today at 3 P. M. in Rehobeth Baptist Church.
The Rev. Jerry Robertson and Dr. Bob Schmulyler officiated. Burial
was in the church cemetery.

for the past three years. He attended Friendship Congregational
Holiness Church in Brooks, and was a former Henry County Deputy
Sheriff.

and granddaughter, Brandy Ann Kelley of Fairburn; his mother,
Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley of Griffin, five sisters, Mrs. Alice Jones

Mrs. Mary Alma Mask Huckaby, widow of the late Nonie L.
Huckaby, died early Wednesday morning at her residence in Talladega,
Ala. She had resided there for the past 12 years. Mrs. Huckaby
was 91 and a native of Fayette County. She was the daughter of
the late John Daniel Mask and the late Belle Chappell Mask.
Mrs. Huckaby was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church
in Talledga.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock in
the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in Griffin. The Rev. Jack
Rosser officiated. Burial was in County Line Christian Church
in Digby.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Helen Spradlin of Talledga;
a son, Herman Huckaby; a sister, Mrs. Annie Ray Gay, both of
Brooks; 6 grand children, and 7 great grand children.

The funeral for Miss Agness Josephine Brandenburg, 85,

Miss Brandenburg was a native of Meriwether County and had been
a resident of Griffin for the past 10 years. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church of Griffin, and the A. D.
K. Sorority, Upsilon Chapter. She began her teaching career in
1924 and service as principal of the Margaret Fain School in
Atlanta for 16 years until her retirement in 1962.
Miss Brandenburg is survived by six nephews, Roger K. Brandenburg,
Jr., of Concord, Jody Brandenburg of Houston, Texas, Jimmy Brandenburg
of Lyons, GA, Emory Brandenburg of Homestead, Fla., Bobby Brandenburg
of the Florida Keys, and Arthur Brandenburg of Philadelphia,

Bible Class.

B. Floyd Turner, Concord; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Marshall, and

Mr. Nathan Ray Fleming, 80, of 20 Lenox Circle, Griffin,
died early this morning (Feb 9, 1990) at his residence after
several months of declining health.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 P.M. at First Baptist Church
of Griffin. Dr. Bruce Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in
The Doss Johnson Memorial Garden in Turin with full military
honors.
Grandsons will serve as pall-bearers. The Bramblett Sunday School
Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Fleming was born July 21, 1909 in Appling Leah Community
of Columbia County, Ga., the third son of Hilliard Moseley and
Pearl Blanchard Fleming. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church and the Bramblett Sunday School Class of the church for
34 years.
Mr. Fleming was a graduate of Leah High School, Richmond Academy
of Augusta, and the University of Georgia where he received his
commission as a second lieutenant. He was a member of the University
baseball team in 1931, 1932, and 1933.
Mr. Fleming was a captain in the U. S. Army during World War
II serving in the European Theater for 30 months in Africa, Sicily,
Italy and Southern France. He was a life member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post No. 5448 where he was chaplain for 18 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 15 and a former member
of the Kiwanis Club of Griffin.
Survivors include his wife, Janie Woods Fleming; two daughters
and sons-in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Faye) Milner, and Mrs.
and Mrs Frank (Emily) Smith all of Griffin; four sons and daughters-in-laws,
Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Connie) Fleming, Leesburg, Mr. and Mrs. Fielding
(Jane) Fleming, Clarksville, Mr. and Mrs. Lon (Janice) Fleming,
Griffin, and Mr. and Mrs. John (Cheryl) Fleming, Rex; one brother

Miss. Hutchinson was a native of Haralson, GA., daughter of the
late John Wilbon Hutchinson and the late Mollie Gray Hutchinson.
She attended Georgia State College for Women and received a A.B.
degree from Sanford University in Birmingham. Miss. Hutchinson
was a retired teacher with the Birmingham Public Schools. She
was a Methodist.
Survivors include one brother, J. W. Hutchinson, Haralson; one

Mr. Maxwell was born in Lamar County and has lived in Griffin
for many years. He was the son of the late E. G. Maxwell and
the late Opal Ratliff Maxwell.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Maxwell; two daughters and
sons-in-laws, Rhonda and Steve Patton, Griffin, and Lisa and
Gary Handley, Griffin; three sons and daughter-in-law, Danny
and Margie Maxwell, Barnesville, Jerrell Maxwell, Zebulon, and
Joey Maxwell, Griffin; three sisters, and brothers-in-law, Regina
and G. T. Brinkley, Tennessee, Juanita and Jack Kidd, Valdosta,
and Marlene and Wilson Woodham, Griffin; brother and
ister-in-law, Grady and Vivian Maxwell, Griffin; Seven grandchildren,

Mrs. Carolyn Elizabeth Borders Kelley, 91, of 934 W. Poplar
St., Griffin, died Monday (June 10, 1991), at Spalding Regional
Hospital. She was born in Pike County and was a member of the
Friendship Congregational Holiness Church of Brooks. She was
retired from United Cotton Goods.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue Kelley Kilgore of Griffin;
sons, James E Kelley of Ellenwood, and W. N. "Nat"
Kelley of Birmingham, Ala.; stepchildren, Samuel Rufus Kelley
of Baltimore, Md., J. B. Kelley of Griffin, Nina Kelley Spruill
of LaGrange, Alice Kelley Jones of Fairburn, Mary Kelley Foster
of LaGrange, and Dot Kelley Baker of Pell City, Ala.; 30 grandchildren;
many great grandchildren and many great great grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at Friendship Congregational
Holiness Church in Brooks. The Rev. Gene Middlebrooks officiated.
Interment was in the Kelley Family cemetery (Brooks, GA).

Hugh Bowling Crews, Sr., Passed Away . . .
Mr. Hugh Bowling Crews, Sr., age 68, of Riverdale, died late
Monday evening (Nov 11, 1991) at Southern Regional Medical Center
in Jonesboro.
Mr. Crews was retired from Eastern Airlines in charge of the
baggage route service. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II
where he served as a medic.
Funeral services were today, Nov. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at East Point
First Congregational Holiness Church with the Rev. Steve Perry
officiating. Interment was in College Park Cemetery. (See note
below.)
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary B. Crews; four daughters,
Mrs. Glenda Perry of Riverdale, Mrs. Constance Shiflett of Griffin,
Mrs. Deborah Hayes of Riverdale, and Mrs. Cheryl Lynn Lindsey
of Stockbridge; one son, Mr. Hugh B. Crews, Jr. of Griffin; five
sisters, Mrs. Lottie Boyd of LaGrange, Mrs. Dortha Kelley of
Griffin, Mrs. Mollie Jordan of Augusta, Mrs. Willie Ruth Shivers

Mrs. Addie Rosie Moody, 93, or 1563 85 Connector, Brooks,
died Tuesday (April 21, 1992) at Newnan Hospital.
She was the widow of J. J. Moody. She was born in Spalding County,
daughter of the late J. D. Biles and Mae Putman Biles. Mrs. Moody
was a homemaker and a lifelong member of the County Line Christian
Church.
Funeral services will be Thursday April 23, at 3 P. M. at Haisten's
Chapel in Griffin. Burial will follow at County Line Christian
Church in Brooks. The Rev. George Boswell and the Rev Charles
Johnson will officiate.
Survivors include two sons, Wilson Moody of Columbus, and Gene
Moody of Brooks; three daughters, Doris Carden of Griffin, Ruby
Wallis of Atlanta, and Rancine Crisler of Brandon, Fla.; one

died Wednesday, April 29, 1992, at her residence.
Mrs. Biles was born in Spalding County, GA, daughter of the late
Joseph Brown Bell and Mary Banks Bell. She was a homemaker and
member of the Rehobeth Baptist Church.
Mrs. Biles is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth Logan, Ida
Mae Ellis, and Bobbie Norwood, all of Griffin, and Dorothy Pate
of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one son, Joel Thomas Biles of Augusta,
GA, fifteen grand children; sixteen great grand children, and
one great great grand child.
Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 2:30 P. M. at the
Rehobeth Baptist Church. The Rev. William Dillenbeck will officiate.
Internment will be in the church cemetery.

Church. She was a life long resident of Brooks.

in Augusta.
She was born in Woolsey, the daughter of the late Charles Regan
Woolsey and the late Stella Gay Woolsey. She was the last known
grandchild of the late Rev. Dr. Isaac G. Woolsey, founder of
Woolsey. She was a member of Eastern Starr, from which she received
her Fifty Year Pin and service as Worthy Matron for many years.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She served
in the WAC in 1945. She was a member of Capital View Baptist
Church in Atlanta.
Miss. Woolsey is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. William S. Skelton, 89, of 33 Bleachery Street,
Griffin, died Saturday night, July 30, 1994, at Spalding Regional
Hospital in Griffin.
He was born in DeKalb County, Ga., son of the late Samuel Sanford
Skelton and the late Mrs. Elizabeth McElroy Skelton. The Rev.
Skelton had lived for many years in Griffin. He was a retired
minister and a former pastor of West Sunnyside Congregational
Holiness Church in Sunnyside where he was a member. The Rev.
Skelton also pastored several other churches in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Ogletree Skelton of
Griffin, children, Willie Mae and Aremenius Floyd, Snellville,
Charles and Mary Skelton, Jackson, Marion S. Powell, Atlanta,
Evelyn Walden, Forest Park, Mary Francis Harwell, Griffin, Annie

Mr. Biles was a lifelong resident of Griffin and Spalding

Della Coggins Biles. He was a parts clerk for Bathelamue Buick
for 22 years and retired from Southlake Ford with 18 years service.
He served his country in the marines, serving in the south and
central pacific area during World War II.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Bob Cheatham
Sunday School Class.
Mr. Biles is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nadine McKneely Biles;
a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Tina Biles of Griffin; a
granddaughter, Bonnie Biles of Griffin, brothers and sisters-in-law,

She was a retired licensed practical nurse.

Mrs. Kelley was employed as director of accounting at Spalding
Regional Hospital.

Mr. Roy Chester Biles, 99, of 1009 W. Poplar St., Griffin,
died Tuesday night, November 7, 1995, at Hill Top Nursing Home
in Forsyth.
Mr. Biles was a life long residence of Spalding County in the
Line Creek District. He was the son of the late James Daniel
Biles and the late Mary Putman Biles. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Biles was a veteran of the U. S. Army having service during
World War I. He was a member of the Crestview Baptist Church.
Mr. Biles was the husband of the late Myrtice C. Biles. He also
was preceded in death by two sons, Esric Biles and Ernest Biles.
Survivors include his grandchildren Brenda and Charles Seagraves
of Stone Mountain, Becky and Tom Berry of Tucker, and Jan and
Don Byram of Lexington, N. C.; great grand children, Audrey Seagraves
of Stone Mountain, Graham Seagraves of Stone Mountain, Travis
Seagraves of Auburn, Ala., Harriet Berry of Tucker, Anna Berry
of Tucker, Leslie Byram of Levington, N. C., and Stewart Byram

Dr. J. Weldon Kelley
John Weldon Kelley, M. D. General Surgeon and lifelong
resident of Griffin (Georgia), died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1995, at
the age of 71.
Dr. Kelley was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Homer
Kelley and Dessa Dunn Kelley, and a brother H. Fred Kelley. Dr.
Kelley graduated from Emory Medical School where he was elected
to ETA Sigma Pi and Alpha Epsilon Upsilon honor societies. He
did his internship and residency in surgery at the Medical School
of South Carolina, Roper Hospital, Charleston, S. C.
He served his country as a medical officer during the Korean
conflict. He spent seven years as a volunteer with the American
Cancer Society, holding such offices as medical vice president,
president and chairman, board of directors in the Spalding County
unit. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Chapter
of the American Cancer Society for five years, serving in various
committees.
Dr. Kelley practiced general surgery in Griffin, his hometown,
for more than 40 years only retiring in February, 1995 following
an automobile accident. He is a past president of the medical
staff of Griffin-Spalding County Hospital. In his years at Griffin-Spalding
County Hospital, Dr. Kelley introduced many innovative surgical
procedures. In 1952 he performed the first elective, open chest
surgery, utilizing endotracheal tube anesthesia and a closed,
underwater chest drainage system.
The following year, he introduced bronchoscopy with Jackson Bronchoscopes
and Esophagoscopes and Direct Cystology Studies. He introduced
split-thickness skin grafting with Brown Electric Dermatone in
treatment of third burns in 1954. More recently, he pioneered
the use of Stamey Cystourethorpexy in the female for urinary
incontinence due to trauma of childbirth or aging, where applicable,
in 1984.
His talents were many, including photography, gardening and cabinet-making.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hardman Kelley; four sons,
John Weldon Kelley, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Charles Blakely Kelley
of Austell, David Anthony Kelley of Ruckersville, VA., and Richard
Terrell Kelley of Griffin; three daughters, Laura Burnette of
Panama City, Fla., Jamie Tarasidis of St. Louis, Mo., and Jere
Gough of Duluth; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Angelyn Kelley
Patterson of Griffin; five nephews and one niece.
Friends may visit the family from 4-8 p.m. today, Dec. 7, and
from 7-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 8, at the Haisten-Woodlawn Funeral
Home.
A memorial service conducted by Dr. Bruce Morgan will be held
at the First Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 9, at l p.m.In
lieu of flowers, the family request contributions may be made
to the First Baptist Church Children's Program, Griffin, Ga.,
in Dr. Kelley's honor.

Mr. Newton Shiflett, 87, of 415 Airport Road, Griffin,
died early Saturday morning at the Griffin Health Care Center.
Mr. Shiflett was born in Carroll County, Ga., the son of the
late William Augustus Shiflett and the late Mary Etta Chambers
Shiflett. Mr. Shiflett was retired from the Crompton Highland
Mill and was a member of the West Sunny Side Congregational Holiness
Church of Sunny Side, Ga.,
Mr. Shiflett was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Patricia
Shiflett. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Shiflett of Sunny Side;
daughter and son-in-law, Sondra and Bennie Branan of Sunny Side;
sons and daughter-in-laws, Reginal and Nancy Shiflett, Keith
and Connie Shiflett, all of Sunny Side; Mike and Susan Shiflett
of Grovetown, Ga., 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren;
one sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Beverly Arnold of Breman,
Ga.; sister-in-laws, Ludie Mae Vickers and Mayomie Vickers of
Griffin; brother-in-law, Elbert Vickers of Griffin; several nieces

Mrs. Messer was born in Randolph County, Ala., the daughter of
the late Fredrick C. Dukes and the late Rebecca Monkus Dukes.
She was a housewife and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include six sons, Jimmie Messer, Orlando, Fla; Wayne
Messer, Columbus, Eddie Messer, Locust Grove, Henry Messer, Valley,
Ala., Terry Messer, Williamson, and Jerry Messer, Milner; three
daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley, Valley, Ala., Mrs. JoAnn James,
Valley, Ala., and Mrs. Betty Jean Crowdler, Brunswick; one brother,
L. M. Dukes, Macon; one sister, Beulah Mae McDougal, Macon; 38
grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren;

Funeral services were today, March 13, at 3 p.m. (Eastern time)
in the chapel of the Johnson-Brown Funeral Home in Valley, Ala.,

Mr. Jordan, a native of Barnesville, Georgia, had lived in Augusta
for 52 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a dispatcher
for the City of Augusta and Fort Gordon Bus Lines. He was a member
of the Men's Bible Class, a deacon, a Sunday School teacher,
a superintendent and a trustee.
Survivors include his wife, Mollie Crews Jordan; a son, Arthur
Joseph Jordan, Lawrenceville, Georgia; two daughters, Connie
Winkles of Tyron, Georgia; and Violet Nelson, Martinez; a sister
Beulah Brinkley, Atlanta; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pall bearers will be Todd Johnson, Travis Winkles, Dwayne Soto,
David Winkles, Arthur Winkles and Rodney Soto.

Mr. Samuel Worth Huckaby, 80, of Brooks, Ga., died Thursday
morning, May 30, 1996, at Spalding Regional Hospital.
He was born in Fayette County, Ga., the son of the late Noah
Damascus Huckaby and the late Alice Jones Huckaby. The Rev. Huckaby
was pastor of several Georgia churches among them Calvary, Faith,
and New Salem, all of Griffin, Valley Grove of Thomaston, and
Shadnor Baptist Church, Union City, Ga. He was ordained into
the ministry in 1942. The Rev. Huckaby was well known in several
states for his evangelical ministry as well as being active in
all levels of Association work.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christine Hayes Huckaby
of Brooks; daughter, Joanne Floyd of Riverdale; sons and daughters-in-law,
Eugene and Jan Huckaby of Temuco, Chile, Lyndon Huckaby of Lindale,
Ga., and Keith and Chokdee Huckaby of Brooks; grandchildren,
Mr. and Mrs. Tom (Chris) Aker of Suwanee, Ken Walraven and Brian
Walraven of Cave Springs, Ga., Mr. and Mrs Todd Huckaby of Santiago,

Mrs. Belva Mable Crews Shivers, age 70, of 84 Kilgore Road,
died Sunday, September 28, 1997, at the Spalding Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Shivers was a lifelong resident of Spalding County, daughter
of the late Rev. Joe P. Crews and the late Willie Rodgers Crews.
She was retired from the State of Ga. Dept. of Transportation
as a supervisor over permits and enforcement. She worked part
time at Jenny's Hallmark as a sales clerk and was a very active
member at the Family Worship Center.

years.

Mrs. Hand was born in Fayette County, Georgia. She was the daughter
of the late Noah Huckaby and the late Alice Jones Huckaby. Mrs.
Hand was a retired employee of Dundee Mills at the Lowell Bleachery
and was a member of the Hanleiter United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: four daughters, Edith Hall of Jackson, Louise

Mr Thomas Elbert "Tom" Dunn, 66, of 439 High
Falls Road, Jackson, died Thursday night. Aug. 6, 1998, at his
residence after an illness of several months.
Mr. Dunn was born March 11, 1932, in Fulton county, son of the
late John Dunn and the late Edna Louise Smith Dunn. He was retired
from the U. S. Army after 22 years of service. He was much decorated
and served in Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. He attended GMAC,
Auburn University, Mercer & Georgia. He taught ROTC at R.
E. Lee in Thomaston, Drake High in Thomaston, Groves High School
in Savannah and Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. He owned and
operated Dunn's Caretaking for lawns and gardens, maintaining
lawns and flowers for banks and churches. He was a member of
Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce English Dunn of Jackson; one
son, Thomas Michael Dunn of Jackson; two grandchildren, Michelle
Lee Dunn of Jackson, and Thomas M. Dunn of Griffin; two sisters,
Joyce Phillips of Forest Park, and Margaret Long of St. Petersburg,
Fla.; two brothers, John Lewis Dunn of Key West, Fla., and Franklin
Dunn of High Point, NC.; several nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law,

Monday, January 4, 1999, p. 2A, MILTON COGGINS COOK,
Mr. Milton Coggins Cook, age 78, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999,
at Spalding Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Cook was one of 18 children, born March 4, 1920, to the late
Mr. E. E. Cook and the late Mrs. Mary Coggins Cook. He was a
longtime resident of Griffin and served his country during World
War II with the 757 Tank Battalion stationed in Italy.
Mr. Cook was a local grocer for many years, owning stores in
Griffin, Hampton and Zebulon. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Griffin, and the Bramblett Sunday School class.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Kathleen Landers
Cook; seven children, Eddie and Joanna Cook, Norma and Carlton
Huff, Sr., Dennis and Joan Cook, Berry and Theressa Cook, all

Sunday School class and Philithea Sunday School classes are asked
to sit as a group at the service. Interment will follow in the
Westwood Gardens.

Mrs. Bennie English, age 81, of 442 High Falls Road, Jackson,
passed away Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Spalding Regional Hospital
in Griffin.
Mrs. English was born Oct. 2, 1917. She was the widow of the
late Robert P. English. She was retired from United Cotton Goods,
and was a long and devoted member of the Pleasant Hill United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Janie
English of Jackson; one daughter, Joyce E. Dunn of Jackson; three
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
|Funeral services for Mrs. Bennie English will be conducted Tuesday,
Jan. 5, 1999, at 2 P. M. from the Pleasant Hill United Methodist
Church. The Rev. Charles Nave will officiate. Interment will
follow in the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Belva Mae Tate Crews, age 91, of Valley Hill Road,
Griffin, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Brightmoor Medical
Care Home.
Mrs. Crews was born in High Shoal, Ga., daughter of the late
Gus Emory Tate and the late Sally Ann Haynes Tate. She was a
member of the East Griffin Congregational Holiness Church. Mrs.
Crews and Bishop Crews have been in the ministry for 71 years,
having pastored in Georgia and Alabama.
Survivors include her husband, Bishop William Terry Crews, Sr.;
daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann and the Rev. Barry Jones of
Griffin; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Lou Crews of Fayetteville
and the Rev. Joseph E. and Sue Crews of Jonesboro; grandchildren,
Tera Hayes, Celia Ann Cox, Teneya Fouts, Renee' Fowler, Terry
Crews III, Emory Crews and Freida Fields; 16 great grandchildren;
three great-great grandchildren; sisters, Annie Elder of Monroe
and Hazel Sparks of Forsyth.
Funeral services for Mrs. Belva Mae Crews will be conducted Monday,
Feb. 15, 1999, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral

Mrs. Dortha Eliza Kelley, 82, of 3672 Fayetteville Road,
died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Spalding Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Kelley was born in Walton County on April 8, 1916, to the
late Rev. Joseph P. Crews and the late Willie Mattie Rodgers
Crews. She was preceded in death by a son, Willie Joe Kelley;
a great-grandson, Devon Aubrey Kelley; brothers, Bishop Terry
Crews, John Henry Joseph Crews, Elijah Crews, and the Rev. Hugh
Bowling Crews; sisters, Lottie Boyd, Kathleen Crews, and Mabel
Shivers. She was a member of West Sunnyside Congregational Holiness
Church.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Joel B. Kelley Sr.;
daughter and son-in-law, Faith and Wilson Wallace of Griffin;
son and daughter-in-law, Joel B. Jr. and Elizabeth Kelley of
Valley, Ala.; grandchildren, Doris Butler, Joel B. Kelley III,
Wayne Kelley, Donald Kelley, Kelley Dunn, and LaQuita Darley;

Wednesday, September 22, 1999, ROY JAMES BAILEY,
Mr. Roy James Bailey went to sleep, Sept 20, 1999, to awake
in heaven. He was born in Griffin, Sept. 26, 1913, son of the
late George and Eva Gardner Bailey and was preceded in death
by two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Bailey was a farmer and worked in Dundee Mills Nos. 1, 3,
and 5. He was an aircraft mechanic in World War II in Warner
Robins. After the war, he was a well known auto mechanic for
30 years and retired in 1976 from Star Chevrolet Company.
Mr. Bailey was a member of Highland Baptist Church and a deacon.
being ordained at Rehoboth Church in 1949. He was a Junior Boy's
Sunday School teacher for many years and was assistant Men's
Sunday School teacher, among other offices. He was a member of
the Walking For Wellness at the City Park.
Mr. Bailey's survivors are his wife of 62 years, Alberta Cardin
Bailey; daughters and sons-in-laws, Ann Bailey, Faye and Russ
Chasteen, and Brenda and Rene' Cormier; grandsons and wives,
Tim and Barcia Chasteen, David and Cindy Chasteen, Dan and Jennifer
Chasteen, and Lisle Cormier; granddaughters, Terri and Mike Childers,
and Elise Cormier; great-granddaughters, Emily and Audrey Chasteen,
Julia Ann Childers, and Bonnie Blue Chasteen; great-grandsons,
Isaac and Owen Chasteen, Ben Childers, and Bailey Chasteen ;
and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Roy James Bailey will be conducted Wednesday
at 2 P.M. in the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. The Rev.

Mrs. Grace Bridges, 85, of Lakeview Avenue, Griffin, died
Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 at the Spalding Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Bridges was born in Monroe County, daughter of the late
William Rogers and the late Maude McDonald Rogers. She was preceded
in death by her husband, James E. Bridges. She was retired form
Dundee Mills # 2.
She is survived by daughters, Peggy Joyce Fouts of Zebulon, and
Nancy Crane of Evans Mills, N. Y., sons and daughter-in-law,
Preston and Shirley Bridges of Jenkingsburg, and Dannie E. and
Janice Bridges of Ft. Walton, Fla. Other survivors include a
sister, Beatrice McLean of Rome, a brother, T. L. Rogers of Griffin,
10 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Bridges will be conducted Friday
at 2 P.M. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. The Rev.

Tuesday, December 21, 1999, p. 2A, WILLIAM DOUGLAS (W. D.) SHIVERS,
Mr. William Douglas ( W. D. ) Shivers, 78, of Griffin,
died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at his (nieces) residence, after
a period of declining health.
Mr. W. D. Shivers was born in Pike County on July 20, 1921, son
of the late Charlie F. Shivers, Sr. and the late Ada Greene Shivers.
He was a retired Delta employee with 30 years of service; a member
of the Delta Pioneers; a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served
in World War II in the South Pacific as a sergeant; a life member
of Post 5440; a longtime and active member of the Family Worship
Center, formerly the East Griffin Congregational Holiness, where
he served as a deacon for 39 years. He served on the Central
Georgia Campground Committee for 44 years, was an honorary committeeman
at the Campground and also served as a trustee for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Willie Ruth Crews Shivers; a brother,
Frank Shivers, Jr., and children, special niece Belva and Charles
Fisher, Jamie Fisher, Chris and Dianne Blackmon, Chasitity and
Taylor Blackman, Gary Blackmon, special nephew Terry and Laine
Shivers, Jade and Jantzen Shivers, and Zack Brown; sister, Marian
Davis, and children, John and Ruth Davis and Juanita Sprayberry;
sisters, Jerline Vaughn and Arvella Smith; sisters-in-law, Betty
Shivers and Talma Shivers, and the entire Crews family.
Funeral Services for Mr. W. D. Shivers will be conducted Wednesday
at 2 p. m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. The Rev.
Barry Jones, the Rev. Joe Crews and the Rev. Billy Anderson will
officiate.
Music will be provided by the grandchildren of the Rev. Joe and
Willie Crews. Pallbearers are Terry Shivers, Jantzen Shivers,

Mr. Samuel O. "Sam" Jones, 75, of 177 Poplar
St., Experiment, died Sunday morning at Christian Ministries
Hospice.
Mr. Jones was born in Coweta County, son of the late James Cleveland
Jones and Birdie Gay Jones. He was formerly employed with Kawneer
for 22 years and Dundee No. 1 for 24 Years. He was a member of
Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Myrtle Jones of Experiment;
daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Richard Stinchcomb of Griffin;
son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Lisa Jones of Griffin; grandchildren,
Richie Stinchcomb, Lindsey Jones and Evan Jones; sister and brother-in-law,
Sarah and Elmer Cox of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.
