Joel Sumner settled in what is now Rebecca in 1823. Rev. Lawson Smith settled there also around 1872. The community was first called Grover after Pres. Grover Cleveland. The WIREGRASS FARMER and STOCKMAN dated 07 March 1929 states that Rebecca was named for Mrs. Rebecca Whatley, mother of the railroad engineer. Others say that Rebecca is named for Malissa Douglas Smith's sister; Malissa being wife of Lawson Smith.
