New to Genealogy?

This page contains links that will help you in your research.  It has suggestions on how to post queries at AHGP, Rootsweb/Ancestry.com and Genforum. The links to these forums can be found below.  There is also a list of volunteers who can help you with your Turner County Georgia research.  This page also contains information on how to join the Turner County mail list, which is also a great way to post a query and find others researching your surname.  Rootsweb also has mail list for surnames and other groups.  For a listing go to: http://lists.rootsweb.com/

When you post a query whether it be at one of the forums or mail list put as much information in the query as you can.  Display surnames in all caps.  It is considered yelling if the whole query is in all caps.  Some researchers may yell at you for using all caps.  If you have hand/wrist problems and cannot do the shift key all small letters is considered to be okay.

Example don't: Subject: Doe Family
--- John Doe wife Mary.
Example do:  In your subject line you might post: Doe>SC>GA, Smith>GA, Jones>GA or John Doe, 1866 SC>1880 GA or Ancestors Mary Alice Smith 1893 Wilcox/Turner GA
--  John DOE born abt 1840 in SC, wife Mary ? born abt 1846 in GA.  Children: Alice born abt 1866, John born abt 1867 and Martha born abt 1869.  Martha DOE married Charlie SMITH, the son of Robert SMITH and Elizabeth BROWN, 10 Oct. 1889 in Wilcox County GA.   Children: John Robert born Dec 1890, Mary Elizabeth born March 1892 and my grandmother, Mary Alice born 5 April 1893.  Mary Alice SMITH married James JONES in Turner County GA on  20 August 1913. I'm looking for information on my grandmother's siblings and ancestors, please contact me at://///

Turner County is a young county and was taken from portions of Wilcox, Irwin, Dooly, and Worth counties.  Make sure you look into these counties too.

Visit The ROOTS-L Library, it contains a lot of information on how to get started with genealogy.

Go through the genealogy lessons at RootsWeb Guides to Tracing Family Trees .  There are other guides at other sites. You can find them by doing a Google Search and typing in "genealogy lessons".

Google is also a good way to find web sites that contain your surname.  Please don't think that all that is written on the internet or books is the truth.  Make sure that you document your research and if you find someone that has your family lines on the web make you sure you document their work too.  You could wind up researching the wrong line if you don't.

Check out your local library.  Some have a genealogy department that contains lots of research material.  Some libraries have Ancestry Library Edition for free..  They may also offer other free resources on the computer such as Heritage Quest Online .

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints (Mormons) have History Centers.  Through them can be ordered many records and books contained on microfilm and microfiche.  To find a History Center near you go to: History Centers.  To search their catalog go to: Catalog.  To do a surname search go to: Surname Search.  If you don't have a computer program to put your information in you can download one from: Downloads.

Shirley Hornbeck's This and That Genealogy Tips has great tips for research.  Learn about researching ethnic groups, censuses, naming patterns, probate records, diseases, different meaning of kinship words and much more.
