The Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home in conjunction with The Cherokee Nation will offer residents of Northwest Georgia and surrounding areas a four-day, thirty-two hour course in Cherokee Nation History over two weekends, November 6-7 and November 20-21, 2004, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day. Conducted at the Heritage Hall Campus of Floyd College in Rome, Georgia the course is open to the public, with only a twenty-dollar registration fee. All course materials will be provided. Citizens of the Cherokee Nation are especially urged to attend.

The November dates in Rome mark only the second time that the course will have been offered in the pre-removal Cherokee Homeland. All participants will receive a certificate from the Cherokee Nation upon successful completion of the class. Harris County, GA

The Coweta Falls Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution would like to locate descendants of Revolutionary soldiers Lieutenant William Norris and Private William Swan. Both are buried in the Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, one mile south of Cataula, Georgia.

These veterans of the American Revolution will be honored by the SAR at a grave marking service at 1:30 P.M. on February 19, 2005 at the cemetery. The public is invited. Any descendants who can be located will be honored guests at this ceremony.

William Norris was born March 31, 1757. He enlisted in May of 1777 and served one year as a Private in Malmedy's North Carolina Regiment. In 1781 he served for three months as a First Lieutenant under Captain Kingston and Colonel Robert Smith. He re-enlisted in 1782 as a Private. Patriot Norris is a true American hero, participating in the Revolutionary War battles of Brier Creek, Georgia and Camden, South Carolina. After the war he migrated to Harris County, Georgia and received a pension for his services.

Norris married Nancy Watkins. He died April 5, 1844. Descendants are believed to reside in Georgia, Alabama and Florida.

William Swan was born in 1758. A native of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, he enlisted there in 1780 and served as a Private in Samuel Fluellyn's North Carolina Troop of Riflemen for three months. He re-enlisted in 1782 as a Private in a Company of Light Dragoons on an expedition with General Rutherford. After the Revolution, he lived in Morgan, Jasper, Newton and Harris Counties, Georgia. He also received a pension, and died August 17, 1849.
