Crum Family

Greetings, My name is Janine and my grandfather always said we had Iroquios roots. He never specified which tribe, but that is what we grew up knowing.  In 1983 my family and I started researching the family tree, and in spite of the fact that my grandpa, black haired and black eyed and "indian looking" that he was, had stated this, we have been unable to prove it. What we have found is very interesting though.  His Great-great-great grandfather, John CRUM was born in Pennsyvania.  Where in Penn, I have yet to find out, but when he was 9 years old (around 1779) according to county history books in Indiana where he later lived, he was captured by a tribe of Indians.  He was held until around age 18  when the tribe led him back to his parents.  For the rest of his life, however, according to his grandchildren in the article, he was visited by an Indian chief at his home in Indiana (Delaware Co.,). With that in mind, I have several questions that hopefully you can help me with.  First of all, which Indians were in and around Pennsylvania around 1779?  Which of these would be ruled out because they were generally hostile toward Whites at this time?  Any idea where I could go to check for a record of this incident?  John Crum moved to Ohio in the early 1800's.  In 1806, in Greene Co., he married Mary Lee.  Mary had passed away by 1815 when he married Rachel Andrews.  Considering that Greene Co., was Tecumseh territory, I am a little suspicious that Mary could have been our Indian ancestor.  I know grandpa said "Iroquious" but he lived in Iroquious Co., ILL at the time and perhaps that got messed up in the translation.  Anyway, any help you could give me on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Janine
