Custer Family

From: Charles Marck cmarck@webtv.net

William Custer, and his wife, whose first name is unknown, whose maiden
name was Cain/Kain, their children, and other members of the Custer and
Cain clans were settling at
Great Levels, now Lewisburg, WVA c1763.
While William was on Militia duty, and during
Pontiac's War, his wife was kidnapped by
Indians. She left a baby crying in the cabin,
Conrad Custer, 3 daughters, and 2 pre-teen
sons who would serve in the Rev War, Arnold
and William. Mrs Custer would no be released until th end of the Rev
War . She was released
in Montreal in 1783. According to family tradition, Willam died eroute
to Canada t meet her. Indeed, claims were filed against his estate in
Greenbrier Co in 1783. Mrs. Custer
went to KY to live with her son Arnold (sons
William and Conrad were also there), where she died c 1789. I first
heard this story in
1946. It has been in obituaries, and was the
topic of a long article in the Madison IN Courier
15 Apr 1913.
