Eberhardt Family

My story was written by the Grandson of the subject, however we have been unable to find any additional information either confirming or denying the story. The story appears in several Pennsylvania County Histories, and was probably copied from the original story written by the Grandson: MARGARET EBERHARDT (daugher of George Eberhardt)

Margaret was born in Berks County, PA, in 1747. Her story begins about 1755 and the beginning of the French and Indian War when Gkeneral Braddock marched against Fort Duquesne (later Fort Pitt) and was soundly defeated by a force of French and Indians in July 1755. Following the defeat, the Indians went on the warpath and attacked the colonists east of the Susquehanna River. The Eberhardts had settled near what is now Pine Grove, Schuykill County (Berks County at the time). Their settlement was attacked by the Indians, probably the Delaware, and according the the written account, the entire family, with the exception of Margaret, were killed and scalped by the Indians. Margaret was taken prisoner and carried into captivity in Ohio. She remained a captive for several years until freed by an Army led by Colonel Henry Bouquet the Indian territory along the Ohio Valley in 1764/5.

The only information found concerning this family was a letter written by 17 settlers living near the Mouth of Penn's Creek on the west side of the Susquehannah. The letter described and Indian Raid in which 25 settlers were killed and scalped or carried away. The letter was to the Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania and requested "speedy relief" for the remaining settlers. Among the signers was one"George Aberheart." It is very probable the George Eberhardt could not read or write, and he name was signed by someone else and was signed as it sounded.
