George GRAY is included on a list of Indian captives at Kittery, ME before 1692. In that year, his father, George GRAY, left him a bequest in his will (proved Aug 1693) if he should ever return from Captivity. A list dated Oct 1695 of English Captives "redeemed from Qubek by Matthew CARY" and of those still remaining in French hands in Canada included "Geo GRAY, boy of Casco" in the latter category. In Oct 1698 the French governor wrote Versailles saying he had surrendered all the English captives except those who had embraced the Catholic religion and wished to remain in Canada. The next year the French King expressed his willingness to grant their request for "Lettres de Naturalite" and asked for a list of their names. In 1702 he was listed as George GRE "at Montreal" and given 60 livres from the sum the King had sent for distribution among the former captives. There is no indication that George ever returned to Maine, and after their mother's death, his brothers, Alexander and James GRAY, were able to claim his portion of their father's estate. --New England Captives Carried to Canada (1677-1760) by Emma L.
