My ancestor, Lebens Hammond, served with the Wyoming Valley, Pa. militia during the attack in July 1778 by tories and Indians known as the Wyoming Valley Massacre. After the capitulation, the Indians set about with their depradations, including the massacre of 16 captured militiamen. Lebens Hammond broke free at the moment when he was being taken forth to be murdered and escaped. The other fifteen were summarily executed.
