Oct. 1888

  Mrs. Eliza Gunn died May 11, 1888 age 85. Born in Jones County August 1803.

 Married Thomas Gunn in 1817 they had 15 children, 48 grandchildren and 2

 great-grandchildren. Survived by 5 daughters and 1 son. Joined Old School

 Baptist Church in Jones county, baptized by Old Brother Henderson, pastor

 of the church. She removed to Talbot County 1840/1841, joined Good Hope

 Church in Upson County Georgia, there being no church close by , when

 Shiloh Church was organized she mover her letter from Good Hope to Shiloh

 until 1885 when she moved to Upson county and lived with her son W. C.

 Gunn ever since.

 

 Jan 1891

  W.J. Hammock born May 21, 1834, died Oct. 28, 1890. Married Miss R. V.

 Hollis Jan. 27, 1890. 11 children to this union, 9 survived him. Baptized

 at Upatoie Primitive Baptist church in 1863 and is buried there. He was a

 member of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist church in Taylor County Georgia from

 the time of it's constitution until his death. Brother Hammock died

 sitting in a chair, leaning on his left hand.

  Joel Carter born April 15, 1810 Twiggs County Georgia , died Dec. 19, 1890

 at son's home near Troy, Pike County Alabama, age 80. He went to Crawford

 County Georgia at the age of 14 with his father. First maried Millie Ann

 Bentley, three children born tow survive him. Second married to Elizabeth

 Roe, 13 children to this union 7 survive him. He united with Ebenezer

 Primitive Baptist Church in Upson County Ga. Was at the time o fhis death

 a member of the church at Beulah, Pike County, Alabama.

  Mrs. Mary F. Huguly born Aug 1, 1847, died June 27 1890 in Monroe County

 Georgia. Youngest child of Jonathan and Matilda Holmes, both

 deceased. Married Z. T. Huguly Oct. 16, 1871 who survives her, no

 children of this marriage. She joined the Primitive Baptist Church at

 Sharon and was baptized by Elder. D. W. Simmons in Oct. 1873

  Zachariah Watkins husband of sister Martha Watkins born Mach 22 1813 in

 South Carolina, died at his youngest daughter, Sister Mollie Bloodworh's

 home in Taylor County Georgia March 18, 1891. Married to Sister

 Watkins for 57 years until her death.

  Mrs. Nettie C. Graddick age 44, Died Oct. 22, 1891. She and her parents

 Deacon T. D and Rebecca Hammack were members of Mt. Carmel

 Church. Married to C. C. Graddick Feb. 17 1885.

  Joel Matthews born Twiggs County Georgia Aug. 18, 1808, died at his

 youngest son's home Charles Matthews near Meansville, Pike County, Ga. May

 9, 1892 age 83.

 Moved to Upson County Georgia in 1827 and lived there until the winter of

 1889 when he moved to his son's home where he died.aried Miss Mourning

 Trice daughter of the late William Trice, June 23, 1829 they had 10

 children, surviving children 2 sons and 1 daughter, 19 grandchildren and

 11 great-grandchildren

 .

  Mrs. Laura Parham born Jan 28, 1862 died May 11, 1892 Crawford County, Ga.

 

 

 Dec. 1892

  Charlie Stephens born July 21, 1855 in Jones County, Ga.,

 Son of Caleb and Elizabeth Stephens. Moved to Taylor County when he was

 19, married Miss Harriet Jones Jan 8, 1873, moved to Macon County in 1874,

 then to Crawford County in 1875 and remained there until his

 death. Brother Stephens and his wife united with the Primitive Baptist

 Church at Salem on July2 1888. Survived by his wife and 7 children

 

 Jan 1893

  Mrs. L. R. (Cox) Edwards born Jan 31, 1825. died July 6, 1892 at her

 sister's home near Geneva, Georgia. Married Snow M. Boynton Sept. 10, 1840

 after the death of Mr. Bonton she married Charles Edward, M. C. Jan 17,

 1860.Member of Upatoie Church and is buried there.

 

 Sept. 1893

  W. G. Allmon born Oct. 8, 1816, died June 10, 1893 age 77. He joined the

 Primitive Baptist Church at Prosperity in Taylor County Georgia and was a

 member for 30 or so years.. Survived by his wife, four children by a

 former wife. Buried at Prosperity Church.

 

On the night of 3 August last, at the house of William Tomlin, in Bulloch County, Captain Elijah Beacham of Montgom­ery County was murdered by James Brantley of Bulloch County. Brantley stabbed Beacham several times on the left side. Brantley is 40 years old or older, dark complexion, 5 feet high, and well made. Issued: September 2 1811.

 

In the town of Dublin, Laurens County, Benjamin Harrison was murdered by Hansel Roberts of Laurens County, on 14th August last. Roberts was held in the jail in Washington County, Laurens County not having a jail, from which he es­caped. Issued: January 7 1812.

 

On 9 August last, in the home of Mr. Ratcliff in Wayne Co.

Gilbert Clement of Burke County was murdered by Collin

Graham of Camden County. Issued:       October 28  1813.

 

On the 21st November last in Clarke County, Daniel Trammel of Clarke County was murdered by Benjamin Thurmond, who af­ter being arrested escaped on the 23rd of the same month and has probably left the state. Issued: Jan. 16 1815.

 

Israel Nares of Brunswick County, Va. , on the night of 3 July last, with James Graham, stole two negro man slaves, Orange and Charles, the property of Archibald Graham of Greene County, Ga. Issued: January 31 1815.

 

Thomas Dixon (otherwise called Thomas Davis), David Rigsby, and Daniel W. Newsome, broke Out of Warren County jail on the night of the 10th inst. Dixon and Rigsby were indicted or capitol offenses and Newsom was held for a stabbing.

Alfred Sinquefield of Washington County, on the 11th day of May last, in Washington County, murdered Obadiah Babb of the said county. Issued: June 24 1816.

 

Jabez Roberts of Baldwin County, on the 4th November inst.,

in the same county, murdered a negro woman, his slave, named Jenny. Issued: November 5, 1816.

 

Archibald Lassiter of Pulaski County, on the night of 26th July last, in the town of Hartford, murdered Isham Cart by looting him through the breast. Issued: October 5 1815.

 
Nhemiah Harvey and Levi Harvey, of Jasper County, on 26th October last, killed and murdered John Ring of Jasper Co. Jemiah Harvey is about 18 years old, fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, thin visage, and pleasing countan­ice. He is also slow of speech, spare made, and about 5 feet tall. Levi Harvey is about 15 or 16 years old, dark complection dark hair, and dark eyes, stout made, 5 feet or 5 inches tall, quick spoken and pleasing contanence  isued: November 16 1815.

 
John Lucas of Screven County, on the 19th of November last murdered David Lee of Effingham County.

Lewis Pitts, free person of color, of Telfair County, on 22nd February last, murdered Darling Griffin in Telfair Co. issued: 24 March 1817.

 

Jesse Trawick, in Twiggs County jail, for murder, escaped the night of the 7th inst. Issued: 15 July 1817.

January 25, 1867

Joseph Lawrence died near Lawrenceville, Ala., on the 21st October 1866 at

about 66 years of age. He removed from Georgia to this State upwards of

twenty years ago and settled in Henry Co., where he has lived ever since....

It may be said with emphasis, that he was the father of the community in

which he lived, of the village which bears his name, and the Church of which

he was a member.... W. K. Norton.

February 1, 1867

Rev. William V. Burney, of the M. E. Church, died on 8th October 1866 in

Tuskegee, Ala., after a long and protracted illness. He was born in Green

co., Ga., Sept. 14th 1805, and at the age of twenty-one he commenced the

practice of law.... He leaves a bereaved widow and six children.

Mrs. Mary Treadwell, relict of Mr. Samuel Treadwell, was born in Newark, N.

J., January 29th, 1777, and died of pneumonia, at the residence of her

son-in-law, Rev. John P. Margart, in Barbour co., Ala., September 26th,

Wm. C. Smith, Jr., died at Athens, Ga., 8 July 1867. He was a native of

Sumter co., Ga., born 11 October 1845. His parents removed with him, their

only child, to Alabama in 1853 and settled in Barbour county.

 

November 1, 1867

Near Fort Browder, Barbour co,. Ala,. Oct. 21, 1867, Edward Dantzler, son of

Col. E. S. Ott, aged 4 years, 1 month and 3 days.

 

January 31, 1868

Rev. Thos. C. Norton was born in Barbour co., Ala., 11th Sept. 1845, and

died in Brundidge, Pike co., Ala., Sept. 24th, 1867. He was the youngest son

of the venerable John Norton, who died in Barbour co., in 1862. He was the

brother of Revs. W. K. and Ethelbert Norton, of the Montgomery Conference.

Mrs. Elizabeth Hameter, widow of the excellent Joel Hameter, the memory of

whose virtues is cherish in the churches of Ala., died March 10th, in

Barbour co., Ala. She was the daughter of Andrew and Nancy Bates, born in

Edgefield Dist., S., C., Jan. 15, 1808. Nov. 14, 1833, she was happily

married to him who for more than thirty years was her earthly stay and

comfort, until God took him and left her with two affectionate daughters.

Her daughter Julia died in 1857 while at College in Tuskegee.... A. J.

Mrs. Jane McRae, wife of John C. McRae, was born Feb. 26, 1806, in Anson

Co., N., C., married Sept. 21, 1826, joined the M. E. Church in 1843, and

died in Barbour Co., Ala., June 17, 1868.

 

April 2, 1869

Fielding Ellis, my grandfather, was born in Va., Oct. 1774, and died in

Barbour co., Ala., 24th Feb. 1869... He removed from Va. to Baldwin co.,

Ga., in 1812, thence to Walton co., where he resided until the death of his

wife, and which he passed his time with his children and grandchildren. He

died a member of the Baptist church.

 

April 29, 1870

The Rev. John F. Dickinson, son of Rev. John P. and Elvira E. Dickinson, was

born in Henry co., Ga., Aug. 8th 1828. In Nov 1852 he was married to Miss

Martha J., daughter of the Rev. John W. Norton, of Barbour co. He died on

March 31st. [account]

Margaret Catherine Norton, daughter of James R. and Margaret Norton, died

near Clayton, Barbour co., Ala., February 20, 1871, in her 39th year. James

R. Norton

 

February 7, 1872

Col. A. A. Franklin Hill was born in Oglethorpe county, Ga., Dec. 4th 1836

and died in Barbour county, Ala., Jan. 9th 1871 [sic]. He was graduated at

Franklin College in 1845 and received the degree of M. D. in 1848 at

Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia. He served for six years as assistant

surgeon in the United States navy, and for a short time edited the Southern

Banner, at Athens, Ga. In June 1869 he was married to Miss Gazzle Williams,

daughter of Maj. Gassoway Williams, of Alabama. He leaves and wife and

child.

 

April 2, 1873

Mrs. Ann Barbara McCants was born in Camden, S. C., November 14, 1794, and

died at Orange Hill, the residence of Rev. John P. Margaret, near Eufaula,

Barbour county, Ala., February 24, 1873. Mrs. McCants was the daughter of

Mr. Daniel Carpenter, formerly a merchant of New York, who removed to Camden

about the year 1792. About the year 1814 she was married to Mr. John

McCants, a promising young merchant of Camden. He died about 1819 and left

two lovely daughters. About the year 1828 she removed to Mount Ariel, now

Cokesbury, S. C. About 1834, she removed to Houston county, Ga., near the

town of Fort Valley, and took her aged mother under her care. Her here

younger daughter was married. In 1844, Mrs. McCants was bereft of her eldest

and only surviving daughter, and in 1849 her mother, Mrs. Lydia Carpenter,

in the 82d year of her age. John P. Margaret
