Killed in
Birmingham
Mr. Joe
Hammock, who was raised over in the neighborhood of
Tazewell and well known in this county, met a tragic death at
Birmingham last Sunday.
He was
foreman of the switch engines in the Louisville and Nashville
railroad yards
and about 8 o’clock on Sunday night, while going out of the yard
with a cut of cars, holding on a ladder attached to the side of the
car, when the train passed under the bridge crossing at
Twenty-second street, Mr. Hammock was knocked off by the collision,
his head badly mashed and he was so seriously injured internally
that as stated he died during the night.
The remains of Mr. Hammock were shipped to Howard,
from which point they were taken to the family burying ground.
Two hours after the accident of Mr. Hammock a boy who was riding
to his home in the same way was killed at the same place.

MOULTRIE, Ga., Aug. 17 --
Mr. Mark Bolding delivered a speech to the voters of the Monk
district at
Rochelle school house, in Colquitt county, Wednesday night in the
interest
of the candidacy of the Hon. Hoke Smith. There was a large crowd
present
at this meeting and there was a great deal of enthusiasm manifested.
This is
one of the best portions of Colquitt county, and so far as could be
learned,
there are not more than four men in the entire district who have not
expressed
themselves as favoring Mr. Smith for governor. There are several
rural routes
running though the district and most of the people are taking
daily papers, and thus keep up with the issues of the campaign.

There are many Georgians there who gave their lives for the cause so dear to
them.
For several years past the leaders of the Richmond Memorial association
have
received letters asking if certain names appeared on the gravestones
in the
soldiers' cemetery. Most of these letters were received from Georgia.
Mrs. John Milledge, president of the Ladies' Memorial Association, of
Atlanta,
was requested, if possible, to have a list of the Georgians buried in
Hollywood
published in a leading daily paper. Mrs. Milledge sent the list to The
Journal.
Below will be found the names of all of the soldiers in Georgia regiments who

Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, August 6, 1908
Death of Mrs. A. M. Dale
The death of Mrs. Katie Dale, wife of Mr. A. M. Dale of Oak Hill, on last
Friday morning, while not unexpected was nevertheless a sad event to her many
friends and relatives. She was a noble woman, and lived to do good to her
household, her neighbors, friends and her church. She passed away after a long
lingering illness and was buried in the Oak Hill cemetery on last Friday
evening. A more extended notice of her useful life will appear in our next
issue. We extend sympathy to the bereaved.
Wilcox Progressive Era, Thursday, August 27, 1908
Our little community has met with a serious loss in the death of Mr. J. F.
Maxwell, one of our faithful old confederate veterans. They are going fast.
After the last one answers to the roll call here, may they all have been called
to "Come up Higher," and drink of the water of life.

A Pretty Home Wedding.
On Wednesday evening the 19th inst., the relatives and friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Tait were gathered to witness the marriage of their niece, Miss
Julia G. Arrington to Mr. I. D. Huston. The home was beautifully decorated for
the occasion, green and white being the predominating colors.
The spacious parlor and dining room were thrown into one, and promptly at
8:30 Mrs. Carrie Bryant, assisted by Mr. A. C. Bryant begun the wedding march.
From behind the curtains appeared two sweet young girls, Bernice Stiggins and
Bessie Daves, and gracefully held the curtains aside. Miss Alice Arrington, the
only attendant entered from the dining room, the bride and groom following,
meeting Rev. J. P. Sanders, just beneath a beautiful arch formed of smilax and
geraniums where he impressively pronounced them man and wife. The sweet young
bride never looked lovelier. She wore white Chiffon and carried a bouquet of
roses. Congratulations followed, all the while sweet music being rendered by
Mr. Bryant. The bride wishing her friends good luck tossed her bouquet in the
air; it was caught by a fair young maid. The bride's cake was then cut. Miss
Helen Tait getting the heart; Mr. Purnell Strother the ring; Mr. John Arrington
the dime, but the straw - it could never be found. The punch bowl being almost
hidden in a bank of green, was presided over by four beautiful little girls,
Virginia Stiggins, Dovie Vass, Mary Vaudevoort and Mary Tait.
Quite a lot of handsome presents attested the good wishes of relatives
and
friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Huston left on Thursday for a few days' visit in Mobile,
thence
on to Nebraska, where Mr. Huston takes charge of a school.

Joseph Hale
Joseph Hale, one of our oldest citizens has gone to rest.
After a lingering
illness of six months, he departed this life
on the ninth day of Nov. 1891, at
the age of 72 years 6 months and 17 days.
He was born in Clarke county Ga., on the 23rd day of April, 1819, and
continued
to live there until 1859 when he moved to Butts county, (GA)
where he remained
until his death.
In Dec, 1841 he married Elizabeth Blakely. The union proved a sappy one and
was
blessed with ten children, all of whom are now of age and living to mourn his
loss.
He joined the Missionary Baptist church in the summer of 1841 and lived a
consistent Christian life the remainder of his days. He died rejoicing in the
name of his blessed Savior, “Jesus” being the last audible word spoken,
and was
still lingering on his lips when his immortal soul went to that Jesus
whom he
loved, there to find eternal rest.
In his relation to society, to the church and his family his life and character
was
most exemplary. He was a good citizen, a kind and affectionate husband
and
father just and upright in all his dealing with men.
At the family altar his children were taught the truths of religion and were
brought up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. By honest labor, industry
and
economy he accumulated a sufficiency of this world’s goods to make his family
comfortable, and left them the heritage of a good name. Such are the fruits of
a
well spent life, a life devoted and consecrated to the welfare of home, family,
church and society.
The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.
May they find, in their affliction and bereavement, consolation in
the
confident hope and assurance that their loss is eternal gain
