S. Johnson Robert
S. Johnson, 85, of 404 E. 17th St. died of cancer Monday, Jan. 14, at Skiff
Medical Center in Newton. Funeral
services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Newton with
the Rev. Matthew Marten officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call at the
church from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Thursday. Memorials win be accepted to First Lutheran Church. The
son of Clarence S. and Clara V. Peterson Johnson, he was born July 25, 1916, in
Munterville. He attended Munterville and Wapello County Schools and graduated
from Ottumwa High School in l933. He later graduated from the St. Louis College
of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo. On June 8, 1940, he married Kathryn
Sullivan. He was a member of Emerson Hough Chapter of the lzaak Walton League,
Iowa Funeral Directors Association, Masonic Lodge #59 and Newton Noon Kiwanis
Club. He served on the Newton City Council for many years and on the Planning
and Zoning Commission for 22 years. Mr.
Johnson was a funeral director and he owned and operated Johnson Funeral Home in
Newton from 1947 until 1975, when it was purchased by Harold Reese. He then
formed the Iowa Farm and Home Real Estate Company and was a salesman/broker
until retirement in 1996. He enjoyed family trips and fishing.
Survivors
include his wife, two sons and daughter-in-law, R. Steven and Janet of Newton
and Christopher of Des Moines; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and
Richard Scerubel of St. Joseph, Mo., Sue and Charles Mahan of Twin Rivers, Wis.,
and Barbara and Dennis Bewyer of Iowa City, 12 grandchildren, seven
great-grand-children; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lela and Myron Swedberg
of Duluth, Minn. He
