 Carl E. Long Sr.

Carl E. Long Sr., 80, of 207 W. 10th St. S. died of heart failure Monday, Dec. 24, at his home. Funeral services were held today at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Gene Bryant officiating. Burial was at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton handled arrangements. Memorials will be accepted to the First Christian Church.

 The son of Walter D. and Effie E. Elliott Long, he was born April 22, 1921 in North Salem, Mo. He graduated from Kirksville High School in Kirksville, Mo. He served In the United States Navy during World War II.

 Mr. Long married Phyllis Sherman Hayes in Newton in 1956. He worked at the Maytag Company for 27 years, retiring in 1983. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing. He enjoyed football and was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Newton. He also was a member of UAW Local 997. He was a resident of Newton since 1956.                                   

 Survivors include two sons, Carl Jr., of Newton and Sherman Hayes of Wilmington, N.C., a daughter, Glenna Hayes Larsen of Bend, Ore. and six grandchildren.
