 Virginia F. McDermott

Virginia F. McDermott, 83, of 732 1st St. E. died of heart failure Friday, Oct. 12, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A Wake Service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church In Newton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 am at the church with the Rev Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. 

Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home and 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Memorials will be accepted to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or in her name.

The daughter of John and Gertrude Beukema Yancey, she was born July 19, 1918, in Newton. She graduated from the high school in Kearney, Neb., in 1936 and attended Kearney State Teachers College for several years. On April 9, 1944, she married Paul Joseph McDermott in Newton. She worked for secretarial services, Vernon Company and for the State of Iowa. Mrs. McDermott was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Newton Elks Lodge, and Newton Retired Senior Volunteer Programs.

 Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Patricia of Rosemount Minn., Ron and Candace of Newton and John of Newport Beach, Calif.: a daughter and son-in-law Marvene Funnell and Ray Bledsoe of Dell City Okla., seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister-in-law, Fern McDermott of Newton; and a brother, Les Yancey of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Virginia F. McDermott

Virginia F. McDermott the daughter of John C. and Gertrude Beukema Yancey, was born July 19, 1918 in Newton, Iowa.  She was a high school graduate of the Kearney, Nebraska Senior High School, Class of 1936. She later attended Kearney State Teachers College, several years, prior to moving back to Newton.  Virginia was employed by the Vernon Company in Newton, in secretarial services, and later for the State of Iowa.

 Virginia was united in marriage with Paul Joseph McDermott on April 9, 1944 in Newton.  She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, the Newton Elks Lodge and the Newton R.S.V.P.

 Death came to Virginia at the age of 83, on Friday morning, October 12, 2001 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton.  Her parents and her husband, Paul Joseph McDermott on July 4, 2001, preceded her in death.

 Those left to honor the memory of Virginia include her sons  & daughters-in-law:  Larry  & Patricia McDermott of Rosemount, MN, Ron & Candace McDermott of Newton, and John McDermott of Newport Beach, CA; her daughter, Marvene Funnell and her husband, Ray Bledsoe of Dell City, OK, her seven grandchildren: Scott, Matthew, Shannon, Jeffrey, Amanda, Jennifer & Skyler; a great-grand daughter, Shania; her brother, Les Yancey of Newton; her sister-in-law, Fern McDermott of Newton; and her many other family & friends.  Virginia will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
