Thomas L. Pelzer

Thomas L. "Tom" Pelzer, 57, of 611 S. 20th W., died from complications of cancer Thursday, Feb 14, at St. Barth’s in the French West Indies. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 11 am. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with Father Ernie Braida officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family will greet friends immediately following the Vigil Service in the McCann Center of Sacred Heart Catholic Church until 9 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Tom Pelzer Memorial Fund and may be left at the church during the services or the funeral home.  

The son of Howard W. and Betty J. (Bennett) Pelzer, he was born Sept. 22, 1944, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1962 and attended the University of Iowa. On Nov. 24, 1973, he married Susan J. Hodgson in St. Louis, Mo. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and worked for Cline Tool for 43 years. He was the president of Cline Tool for the last 24 years.  

Mr. Pelzer was a member of the Elks, Emerson Hough Chapter of the lzaak Walton League, VFW Post 1655, American Legion Post III, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rotary, chairman of ACES Building Committee, board member of Newton Development Corporation, Basics and Beyond, Jasper County Compensation Board, past board director for the YMCA and past president of Ducks Unlimited. 

Survivors include his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Amber of Newton, a daughter Jackie Pelzer Logan of Omaha, Neb., one grandchild, his parents, Howard and Betty of Newton, and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cuba and Jim Patterson of Newton and Ellona and Doug Van Cleave of Sorrento, Fla. 

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his father-in-law.
