Walter
C. Schmidt MESA.
Ariz. - Walter C. Schmidt, 70, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Baxter, died from
complications of cancer Aug. 25 at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa. Funeral
services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bethany United Church of Christ
in rural Baxter. The
son of Nolan "Dutch" and Ada Holtsclaw Schmidt, he was horn Dec. 22,
1930, in Baxter. He served four years in the United States Navy as a signalman.
On March 19, 1950, he married Patty Gooch of Newton. He farmed In the Baxter
area for many years and worked for Newton Feed Center at Newton and was a
supplier of Kent Feeds before retiring and moving to Mesa. Mr. Schmidt was a
member of the Bethany U.C.C., of which he was a deacon for six years and served
as president of the consistory for a time. He was also a member of the Baxter
School Board and the Baxter Town Council. In 1990, he was chosen as Servant of
the Year for Baxter. Survivors include his wife, a son, Jeffery
Conrad Schmidt of Canoga Park, Calif., two daughters and a son-in-law, Julie Ann
Schmidt of Sidney, Mont., and Lori Kay and Tomas Gomez of Torrance, Calif., six
grandchildren and three sisters, Mary Lou Nichol of Toledo, Ohio, Gerry Townsend
of Baxter and Nina Main of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents. Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, September 11, 2001. |
