 William M. Schafer

William M. "Bill" Schafer, 78, of 503 E. 19th St. S. died of heart failure Friday, Feb. 8, at his home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Mary Schnepf, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the First United Methodist Church or to the donor's choice and may be left at the funeral home.  

The son of William and Mary Agnes (Maxwell) Schafer Sr., he was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Newton. He attended Newton schools. On Dec. 14, 1944, he married Betty S. Hicks in Newton. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Schafer was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1655 and a lifetime member of NRA. He worked for Parsons Company and Midwest Manufacturing Company in Kellogg, retiring in 1986. 

Survivors include his wife, a son, Kenneth of Newton, a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jim Porter of Baxter, six granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Howard Trease of Kellogg, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a sister.
