Hugh C. Smith

Hugh C. Smith, 78, of 500 1st St. N. died of cancer Sunday, Feb. 17, at Park Centre Health Care Centre in Newton. Funeral services will Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. where the family will available. Memorials will accepted to the Park Centre Good Samaritan Fund.  

The son of Ralph and Ellen (Carson) Smith, he was born Aug. 8, 1923, to in rural Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1941 and served in the United States Navy during World War II. On Nov. 26, 1944, he married V. Jewell Deaton in Newton. He was superintendent in the die cast department of the Maytag Company for 42 years. He retired in 1988. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW Post 1655, American Legion Post 111, Moose Lodge and lifelong member of Sugar Grove Grange. He lived in Long Island, N.Y., Colfax and Newton.  

 Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Teri Smith-Anderson and John of Saylorville Township and Lyn Smith-Miller and Geoff of Groten, Mass., two brothers, Leland of Newton and Dale of Winona, Minn., and two sisters Mary Smith of Newton and Gladys Balmer of Colfax. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
