 Blanche Ruth Smoley

Blanche Ruth Smoley, 98, of 500 1st St. N. died of heart failure Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Park Centre in Newton. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Pence Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. David Wendel, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, officiating. Burial will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Marengo Cemetery in Marengo.

 Family will visit with friends Friday at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Memorials will be accepted in her name or to Willowbrook Adult Day Care.

The daughter of Clement and Nina Miller Slaymaker, she was born April 30, 1903, near Marengo. She attended Marengo schools. On Feb. 10, 1925, she married Glenn Fred Smoley in Marengo. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton. She had lived in Newton since 1936.

Survivors include a granddaughter-in-law, Mona Maytag of Dover Plains. N.Y.: a half-sister, Lucille McVay of Marion; and a step-sister, Marie Collins of Cedar Rapids. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, grandson, three brothers, and two half-brothers.
