Wilbur E. Edwards
Wilbur Eugene Edwards, 75, of Rt. 4, Newton, a longtime
resident of Newton, died early today, Feb. 28, at his farm
home following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held
at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The
Rev. Clifford Edwards and the Rev. John Moorloch will
conduct services. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove
Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon
Friday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to
8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Survivors are his wife, Neola, six sons, Lee of Penfield,
Ga., the Rev. Clifford of Atlanta, Ga., David of Newton,
Richard of Waco, Texas, Brian of Des Moines and Max of
Elizabeth City, N.C., two daughters, Gloria (Mrs. Lewis)
Spencer of Atlanta, Ga., and Carol (Mr. George) Pierce of
Columbus, Ga.; 25 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Viola Anthony and Ethel
Friends, both of Ukiah, Calif. He was preceded in death by
his parents, his first wife, the former Rosemond Baty, Oct
18, 1975, and an infant grandchild.
Mr. Edwards, a member of Mount Zion United Methodist
Church, had been employed at Thomberts Inc. for 30 years,
retiring in 1980. The son of Edgar Jefferson and Bertha
Hammer Edwards, he was born Feb. 2, 1916 in Ames. He was
married to Neola Meredith Brayton March 25, 1980 in Newton.
Mr. Edwards had resided in Georgia for two years. Wilbur was
the vice president of Thombert, Inc., a plastics fabrication
firm in Newton. In his later years, after his marriage to
Neola, Wilbur attended the Mt.. Zion Methodist Church where he

Police Continue Probe Of Fatal Pedestrian Accident
Newton police are continuing their investigation into a
pedestrian-pickup truck accident at the northwest corner of
the Newton downtown square Saturday morning. The accident
took the life of 57-year-old Rosemond Edwards of 1209 N. 4th
Ave. W.
Driver of the pickup truck, David W. Snoddy, 25, of
Grinnell, in being held in Jasper County jail on a parole
violation. He was on parole to the Central Iowa Foundation
for Alcoholism for an earlier conviction. Witnesses to the
9:03 a.m. accident said the Snoddy vehicle was southbound on
West 2nd St. N. and did not stop at the stop sign but veered
across the intersection striking the Newton Home Savings and
Loan and then striking Mrs. Edwards before coming to
rest.
According to police reports, Snoddy said he was going to
park the truck but remembers nothing after that. Other
witnesses said Snoddy appeared to have suffered some sort of
seizure but it was not confirmed. The truck, owned by I.J.
Guidry of the Coralville Roofing Company received an
approximate $2000 damage.
Mrs. Edwards' son told Newton police that they had parked
their vehicle north of the Newton Home Savings and Loan on
their way to the jewelry store and then heard the truck hit
the building next door. He did not see the mishap occur.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at
the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe Alexander of
Elizabeth City, N.C., former pastor of the Newton Full
Gospel Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the
Sugar Grove Cemetery. Survivors are her husband, six sons,
Lee Edwards of Stone Mountain, Ga., the Rev. Clifford
Edwards and David Edwards, both of Newton, Richard Edwards
of Iowa City and Brian and Max Edwards, both at home; two
daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Gloria) Spencer of Decatur, Ga., and
Carol Edwards of Avondale Estates, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and
her mother, Mrs. Lola Baty of Newton.
Also surviving are two brothers, Carroll and John Baty,
both of California; and eight sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Miriam)
Hayes, Mrs. Max (Lorraine) Specht and Mrs. Bill (Doris)
Immell, all of California, Mrs. Gerald (Pauline) Britsch of
Toledo, Ohio, Mrs. Gordon (Faith) Specht of Lamar, Colo.,
Mrs. Lynn (Junella) Shunk of Perinton, Mich., and Mrs.
Vernon (Winona) Tool and Mrs. Alfred (Dena) Couch Sr., both
of Newton. She was preceded in death by her father and a
sister, Elda.
Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Full Gospel Church. She
had been employed by the Rest Haven Nursing Home. The
daughter of Roy Newton and Lola Hitchler Baty, she was born
Oct. 12, 1918 in Newton and attended Newton schools. ~
