Obituary: G. W. Gist
Gilmore City Enterprise -- George William Gist was born
in Jasper County, Iowa, April 17, 1866, the son of Holden C.
and Harriet (Boyd) Gist.
He was reared on farms and educated in that vicinity and
was married to Eva J. Trimble of Metz, Ia., on October 27,
1887. To this union 3 children, all surviving were born: Roy
E. of Des Moines; Minnie (Mrs. D. O. Hunker) of Rock Island,
Ill., and Charles W., of No. Hollywood, California.
Mrs. Eva Gist died at the time of the birth of the third
child.
On February 21, 1892, he was married to Paralie Meade at
Newton, Ia., so that their Golden Wedding anniversary was
two weeks and one day before his death.
This union was blessed with eight children: Eleanor, who
died in infancy and seven who, with the widow survive. Harry
J. of Gilmore City; Giles G. of Des Moines; Elizabeth (Mrs.
J. M. Dahl) of Gilmore City; Nellie (Mrs. W. R.
Saathoff) of Gilmore City; George M. of Bradgate,
Margaret (Mrs. Dale Cupp) of Clarion; and Kenneth J., of
Barling, Arkansas.
One brother, C. E. Gist of Metz, Iowa, survives. One
brother and two half-brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Gist farmed and worked in the mines in Jasper county,
except for a period of four years, when he operated a meat
market in Nevada, Ia., until 1912, when he moved to
Pocahontas county, where he continued farming until ill
health forced his retirement about seven years ago.
Since May, 1933, he has resided in Gilmore City where his
health gradually declined until his death early Sunday
morning, March 8, 1942, at Humbolt.
Interment was in Sugar Grove cemetery at Metz. Rev.
McDonald of Des Moines and Rev. Schroeder had charge of the
funeral Tuesday March 10.
The pall bearers were: John Hitchler, T. J. Kating, John
Gibson, Fred Engle, Harry Snook, Mat Boyd all of Newton. ~

News Item
A dwelling house on Elias Moffitt's farm west of town, was
destroyed by fire last Sunday evening. It was occupied by
Wm. Gist, whose family was absent at the time. The household
goods were all lost. ~ Newton Record (Newton, Iowa) February
