Ann Maria (Koontz) Helphrey
Born: October 10, 1825, Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland Obituary: Ann Maria KoontzAnn Maria Koontz Helphrey was born in Hagerstown, Md., October 10, 1825. While quite a young girl she moved with her parents to Licking county, Ohio. At the age of 24 years she was married to Mr. Lewis Helphrey. In the fall of 1853 they moved to Iowa City, Iowa. The following year they came to Newton, and the in fall of the same year they came to this place where they have since resided. For several years her health became impaired, but for the past three years she has been a great sufferer, always patient, always hopeful, and fully reconciled to the change which she felt must sooner or later come to her. While quite a young girl she was converted and united with the Lutheran Church, of which she remained a member 1873, when, with her husband, she found a home in the Disciple Church organized in their immediate neighborhood. Hers was a faithful life -- faithful in the school-room as a teacher, in the home as a mother and a companion, and in the neighborhood as a friend and neighbor; she was always faithful to her duty. A husband and six children (three boys and three girls) will miss the thoughtful care of a devoted wife and mother. She departed in peace September 15, 1894, at the age of 68 years, 11 months, and 5 days. One daughter has preceded her to the better land. The funeral services took place at their home on Tuesday. ~ The Newton Herald, September 21, 1894. __________Card of ThanksTo our many friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted to the last sickness and death of our wife and mother, we hereby extend our heartfelt gratefulness for your kindness and sympathy.
