John D. Smith
John David Smith, 75, of Newton died of kidney failure
Thursday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be
at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home, with
burial at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Lucas County and had lived in Newton
since 1953. He was a retired machinist at Maytag, an Army
Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Newton
Blue Jay CB Club and Red Haw Campers Club.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine; four sons, Brian of
Newton, Danny of Hartford, Kenneth of Adel and William of
Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Brenda C. Breckenridge of
Newton and Connie Morrison of Grinnell; three sisters, Ruby
Anderson and Neva Brown, both of Chariton, and Leona Etter
of Talmoon, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home,
where the family will receive friends from noon until the
service begins. Memorial contributions may be made to Metz

John D. Smith
John David Smith, 75, of Rt. 2, Newton, a resident of
rural Newton since 1953, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 9, at
Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines of renal
failure.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m.Monday at
Wallace-Pence Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald Quick, pastor of
the Metz Community Church in rural Newton, will conduct
services.
Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery in rural Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Monday and
visitation with the family will be held from noon until time
of services. Memorials to the Metz Community Church will be
accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Maxine; four sons, William of
Denver, Colo., Kenneth of Adel, Danny of Hartford and Brian
of Newton; two daughter, Connie Morrison of Grinnell and
Brenda C. Breckenridge of Newton; 12 grandchildren; and 11
great grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters, Ruby Anderson and Neva
Brown, both of Chariton, and Leona Etter of Thlinoon,
Minn..
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson,
a great grand son, seven brothers and five sisters.
Mr. Smith, who served in the Army Air Corps during World
War II, was a past member of the United Auto Workers, Local
997, and was a member of the Newton Blue Jay CB Club and the
Red Haw Camper Club. He had farmed for several years in
Lucas County and later was employed at the Maytag Co.,
retiring in December 1981 after 29 years of service.
The son of David Franklin and Martha Lessie Smith, he was
born Dec. 14,1919 in Lucas County. He was married to Zelma
Maxine Piper Aug. 5, 1943 in Burlington. ~ Newton Daily

William "Bill" Smith
William David "Bill" Smith, the son of John David and Zelma Maxine Piper Smith, was born February 2, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. A resident of the Newton, Iowa area since 1953, he was a graduate of the Newton Senior High School, Class of 1964.
On May 3, 1964, Bill was united in marriage with Belinda Jean Hitchler in the Whittenberg Church rural Newton. Jean and Bill moved to Colorado in 1969, where he attended the University of Northern Colorado. Bill enjoyed his family, friends and his home in Colorado, as well as camping, fishing and hunting.
Death came to Bill at the age of 58, on Sunday morning, January 4, 2004 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was preceded in death by his father, John D. Smith on February 9, 1995.
Those left to honor the memory of Bill include his wife, Belinda Jean of Lakewood, Colorado; his daughters & son-in-law: Michelle Foote of Aurora, Colorado and Marisa & Chad Hingst of Wakefield, Nebraska; his five grandchildren: Philip Conti, Geoffrey Foote, Tisean Schulz, Ashlee Hingst & Bently Hingst; his mother, Maxine Smith of Newton; his sisters: Connie Morrison of Grinnell, Iowa and Brenda C. Breckenridge of Newton; his brothers: Kenneth Smith of Indianola, Iowa, Danny Smith of Hartford, Iowa and Brian Smith of Newton; several nieces & nephews; and his many good neighbors & friends. ~ Memorial Card.

Jeremy Smith
INDIANOLA - Funeral services for
Jeremy Youngkin Smith, 11, of 1200 North East, Indianola, a
former resident of Newton, will be held at 7 p.m. today,
March 26, at the First United Methodist Church in
Indianola.
The Rev. Gary Nims, associate pastor of the church, will
conduct services.
Burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Sugar Grove Cemetery,
west of Newton.
Visitation with the family was held Sunday at
Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.
Friends may call at the Indianola church from 7 p.m.
today until time of services.
Memorials in his name, to be used for the purchase of
books for the Indianola Public Library, may be left at the
funeral home.
He died Friday evening at his home following
complications following a bone marrow transplant.
Survivors are his parents, Brian and Sue Smith of
Indianola; and Larry Youngkin of Cedar Rapids; a brother,
Aaron Bryon Smith of Indianola; his grandparents, RV and
Freda Smith, Bob and Ruth Youngkin and John
and Maxine Smith, all of Newton; and his great grandparents,
Edna Smith of Arkansas and John and Ethel Grimes of
Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his geat-grandfather, Thurman
Bryon Smith.
The youngster was a fourth grade student at Emerson
Elementary School in Indianola.
He was born July 19, 1978 in Newton, resided there until
moving to Lacona at the age of eight and later to Indianola.
