Basil Clement was born October 19, 1855, in Indiana and died June 12, 1916, in Jasper Co., Iowa. He married Caroline "Callie" Gant in 1885 in Kansas. Basil and Callie's children were Ruby [Tharp], Homer and Stoy.
This is a story of the American Dream where one comes from humble beginnings with each generation accomplishing more than the prior.
The Clement story is especially interesting because of its connection to baseball. Basil was captain of the Baxter Base Ball Club in 1879 and 126 years later his great-great-grandson, Jeff Clement, signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners Professional baseball team. In between those years Basil's grandsons played on the Metz Semi-Pro team.
