Moses Manning was born in 1795 in Maryland and died April 15, 1876, in Jasper Co., Iowa. He married Cinthia in 1828 and two daughters were born to this union -Sarah and Rebecca.
Moses served as a Private in the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812. His job was to guard the border around Baltimore before and during the attack of the British in 1814. It was this Battle of Baltimore witnessed by Francis Scott Key that spawned the song, "The Star Spangled Banner," named after the 37-foot flag flown over Fort McHenry after the 25-hour battle with the British Navy.
Moses received land grants in Indiana for his military service and came to Iowa in his late life to live with his daughter Sarah (Manning) Hickman.
