Maria DeGraff was born February 12, 1792, in what is now Saratoga Co., New York and died February 1, 1872, in Metz, Iowa. She married John Miller, Jr. in New York and they had 14 children, only one dying before adulthood.
The Miller family moved to Kendall Co., Illinois in the mid-1840s and in the 1850s were some of the first settlers in Jasper Co., Iowa.
Four of Maria's children married into local families: G. W. Miller to Emily Helphrey; Nancy Miller to G. W. Hitchler, John Miller to Lucretia Cannon and Sarah Miller to George H. Cannon. Her grandchildren married into the Hardenbrook, Brock, Emmack, Veach, Vincent, Henney, Leeper, Clement and Walker families.
