HOSEA W. GRAY

First Sheriff of Linn County

Hosea W. Gray was the first sheriff of Linn county, receiving his appointment from Territorial Governor Robert Lucas in 1838. Gray was a leader in the country throughout his life, being a member of the state constitutional convention at Iowa City in 1844, an early historian of Linn county, a Civil war officer, and one of the county's foremost citizens. The above picture was reproduced, as were many others in this edition, by The Sentinel's Photo-engraving department from the only known picture of Mr. Gray, a ferrotype that is a part of a group display of the pictures of the delegates to the constitutional convention of which Gray was a member. The display hangs on the wall of the office of the editor of the Annals of Iowa in the State Historical, Memorial, and Art Museum in Des Moines.
