I have COULTER family information & National Archives Pension File for Private Fernando Cortez COULTER, Pvt. Co. H, 24th IA. Union army. He was the 3rd & last son of David COULTER & Rebecca Jane MARTIN. Although they only lived in IA. a few years, I thought perhaps since he served in IA. Vol. Infantry, someone may be interested. I have sent for his Military File, now that I know his company & death date. He & his wife Harriet L. FISHER were married in Perrysville, Green Twp, Richland [now: Ashland] Co, Ohio on 18 Dec. 1845 by Isaac MARTIN, Justice of the Peace. [He was Rebecca's father or brother- both were Justices.] They had 1st child Simon A. COULTER in Richland Co, OH - born 4 October 1852. [listed in Pension file because of $8.00 month minor's income] They moved to Keokuk or Linn Co, IA between 1852 & Jan. 1861 where Lavina or Lavinia Jane "Jenny" was born 15 Jan. 1861. Harriet L. (FISHER) COULTER died on or about 1 June 1862, location not listed in Pension files. [I have been thru all but 2 cemetery lists for Linn Co. 2 were not available today.] Fernando enlisted Aug. 1862 & died 9 Jan. 1863 at Jefferson Barracks hospital, south of St. Louis, Missouri, of chronic diarrhea. Simon & Lavina had 2 men listed as guardians who lived in Linn Co, IA but the orphans lived with their Uncle James COULTER & his wife in Spring Grove Twp, Green Co, Wisconsin. They both died there & were buried in Spring Grove (Washington) Cemetery, Green Co, WI. Jennie married John N. LAMBERT & had one infant son, not named, who died soon after her. There are no descendants of this family. I am compiling a book on this OH. COULTER family, so have Fernando's ancestors back 3 generations, although not complete yet. His grandfather Judge Thomas COULTER was an 1810 pioneer in OH & founded the village of Perrysville, the First Presbyterian Church & its cemetery. Fernando's 2 older brothers James R. & Thomas Martin moved with the MARTIN families up to Green Co, WI. about 1852. question - where can I check on this ? Library ? Gen. Society? Has anyone abstracted old newspaper obituaries ? I would like to find where Harriet was buried. Thank you.
