He married POLLEY HARRIS March 26, 1803 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Notes for JEREMIAH MCDONALD: Notes for JEREMIAH MCDONALD: THE ROGERS AND McDONALD FAMILIES IN EARLY CALDWELL COUNTY Narrator: Elwood Rogers, 68, of Hamilton, Missouri The interview with Mr. Rogers is quite important because he is a great grandson of Jeremiah McDonald who made the first land entry in Caldwell County in the present Rockford Township 1832. Moreover Mr. Rogers is a son of George F. Rogers who in the period 1860-85 was widely known as a Mason and a well-to-do sporting gentleman of the community north of town. Jeremiah McDonald never lived in Caldwell County, but lived at the foot of the Devil's Backbone in Ray County and died there after the Civil War. He was a well known character, especially for his frugality, living poorly in spite of his large land holdings. In 1839 Randolph his son entered a quarter section in this county. Part of the present Rogers farm north of Hamilton is land entered by him. He had two daughters, one Lockie married George Rogers and the other, Eliza, married Haman Hemry of North of Hamilton. When George Rogers came to this vicinity, he lived in a log cabin which is still standing in part on the Rogers farm. Elwood, the son of George lived for awhile in his youth near Lisbonville a village less than one hundred yards south of the Caldwell County line, with his grandfather Randolph McDonald who lived near the south line of Rockford township in the county. The common name for Lisbonville then was "Chicken bristle" or "the Bristle." This little hamlet became a dead town when the Milwaukee railroad went through the south part of the county and the post office moved from Lisbonville to Elmira. Elwood's uncle by marriage was Haman Hemry who was the son of Abraham Hemry - an early settler (1856) in this county and quite a queer fellow. Abraham loaned money and had many notes on people in Daviess, Caldwell and Ray Counties. He used to ride around collecting interest, his notes stuffed in saddle bags. If a man could not pay interest, Hemry would stay at his house and board it out. Haman's brother Issac was mysteriously murdered near Kidder 1885 - a murder never solved. But the most interesting of all Elwood Roger's kin was his father George F. Rogers a son of George Rogers a pioneer of Daviess County. Swarthy, tall and erect, he affected a wide-rimmed black hat of the southern type, Prince Albert coat, heavy watch chain and flowing ties. He was a ladies man byinstinct and manner. He was self educated to such a degree that he became Deputy Grand State Lecturer for the Masonic Lodge. A farmer by blood and living but he hired most of the work done. He was an old fiddler and loved to play for dances. When he died he left his fiddle to Bob Bryant. He wanted it to go to a good fiddler and his son did not play. In his youth he used to ride clear from Rockford Township twelve miles up to Daviess county to dances. It was at a dance he met his future wife from Rockford township. In this connection, it may be said that girls too rode long distances to attend dances, spending the night, while young men went home after the dances. The following story shows George Rogers, the hot-tempered fire eater. He had a little trouble with a fellow named Harrah who worked for him on the farm, and fired him. Harrah came back and "agged" him into a quarrel. Finally he invited Rogers to bring out his shooting irons. Rogers replied with a motion of his fists that they were the only shooting irons he needed. Finally he got his revolver and they shot it out. It ended in the wounding of Harrah.Rogers rode to town after a doctor and paid the bill and gave himself up but no action was ever taken. Afterwards, the two men being Mason made up their quarrel. Interviewed 1933. (See also the story of George Rogers by S.R. Guffey.) Children of JEREMIAH MCDONALD and POLLEY HARRIS are: 72. i. MCDONALD: Burial: Mount Lebanon Cemetery, French Lick Township, Orange Co., IN49 Notes for CLARENTINE ANDORAH HORNER: McDONALD, Clara, Springs Valley Herald (March 26, 1931) Death Notice Mrs. Clara McDonald, 71 years old, well known and respected citizen of Orange County, died Monday at her home near French Lick following an illness of several months. She was the widow of James McDonald, who several years ago preceded her in death. Mrs. McDonald is survived by six sons and three daughters, Abner and Elias of Montpelier, Ind., Theopolis and Wilbur of Iowa, John of Hartford City, Ind., and Eli of French Lick; Mrs. Lavica Licht of Shoals, Ind., Mrs. Anna Driesbach of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Emma Garner of French Lick. Four children preceded her in death. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Propheter and Rev. Goins were held this afternoon at Mt. Lebanon Methodist church, followed by interment in the Mt. Lebanon cemetery. Springs Valley Herald (April 2, 1931) Obituary Clarentine Andorah Harner, daughter of Elias and Sarah Simmons Harner, was born in Jewett, Ohio, December 25, 1859, and departed this life March 23, 1931 at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 28 days. Her parents moved to Indiana when Clara (as she was called by her friends) was six years of age. Here she grew up to womanhood. She was united in marriage to James McDonald July 13, 1879. To this union thirteen children were born, the husband and four children having preceded her in death: Kinsey Joseph, age 13; Sarah Elizabeth, age 19; George Arthur, age 2; and Charles Wilford, age 7. She was united with the M. E. Church at Waggoners Chapel in 1892 and lived a model christian. she was a kind mother, a faithful wife, a splendid example of a good citizen, neighbor and friend. The community through this death has suffered a loss. She took suddenly ill on September 3, on November 11 she submitted to an operation for gall stones and seemed to be regaining her health for the first five weeks. Later it became evident that her condition was serious. The children were kind and attentive to her and made her last days as pleasant as possible. She told her children many times that th way was bright, and that she wanted her children to live happy and meet her. It can be truly said of Mrs. McDonald that she was a friend to man. she was always found in the sick rooms of her friends and neighbors doing what she could. But we mourn not for her as those who have no hope for Jesus said on an occasion like this: "I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me tho he were dead, yet shall he live." She leaves to mourn her departure nine children: Eli of French Lick; James A. of Montpelier; Elias of Montpelier; Lavica of Shoals; D. T. of Dayton, Ohio; W. B. McDonald of Collins, Ia.; J. L. McDonald, the youngest, of Hartford City; and Emma Garner, the youngest daughter who resided with her mother at home; two brothers, William Harner of Washington, Joseph Harner of Laurenceville, Ill.; one sister Mary Johnson of Evansville; 30 grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a host of friends. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank the neighbors and friends who assisted us during the illness and death of our dear mother. Especially do we wish to thank those who sent the beautiful floral tributes, Rev. Propheter and Rev. He married LILLIE M. LOVE November 13, 1902 in Orange Co., IN73. Notes for JOHN J. MCDONALD: McDONALD, John, Springs Valley Herald (January 18, 1923) News Article Word was received here last evening by the family that John McDonald had died about 7:00 yesterday evening at a hospital in Louisville where he was taken Tuesday for an operation for appendicitis. His condition was such that the hospital doctors could not preform the operation as his temperature remained above 100 degrees and his pulse ran for above normal. It was intended to make the operation yesterday morning if he had been in condition. The body arrived here at 1:15 o'clock today and the funeral will be held at the Christian church tomorrow at 2:30 o'clock and interment at Mt. Lebanon. A daughter died of typhoid fever only a short time ago and another daughter is very ill of the same disease now at the home. The community sympathizes with the family in the series of bereavement which it has lately had to suffer. Springs Valley Herald (January 25, 1923) Obituary John J. McDonald, eldest son of six children born to Wm. H. and Martha F. McDonald, was born Sept. 17th. 1881, and departed from this life January 17th, 1923, aged 41 years and 4 months. His death was caused by acute appendicitis of which there was no chance of cure, although he was rushed to Norton Infirmary at Louisville, Ky. He was preceded across the great divide by a daughter, Muriel, just two weeks and five days before, also by his father, and two brothers, Chas. Arthur and Lewis N. On the 13th day of November, 1902 John was united in marriage to Lillie M. Love. To this union were born three children, Blanch Junge, Muriel, who preceded him into eternity, and Pauline, who is just recovering from a long siege of typhoid. John was a kind and loving husband and father, loved in return by his family and all who knew him. His death is mourned by his wife, two daughters and one son-in-law, his mother, two brothers, Frank and Clarence, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Compton, and many relatives and friends. CARD OF THANKS We wish to thank Doctors Sloan and Boyd, and Mr. Ritter for their kind attention during the illness and death of our loving husband and father, J. J. McDonald. January 13, 1931. Notes for JACK CONDRA MCDONALD: McDONALD, Jack Condra, Springs Valley Herald (January 15, 1931) Death Notice An attack of influenza, later developing into pneumonia, Tuesday proved fatal to Jack McDonald, 23 years of age, at the home of his uncle, Thomas Condra, in French Lick. Young McDonald was apparently well of his attack of flu, when a relapse set in, confining him to his bed in a serious condition. The deceased was well known in French Lick and was a popular member of the younger set. He was a graduate of French Lick High School, class of '25. He was a member of the basketball team when in school, and continued with his basketball work after graduation with several independent teams. He was born at West Baden. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. L. Meredith, pastor of the French Lick M. E. Church, were held at the church this afternoon, followed by interment in the Moores Ridge cemetery. W. V. Ritter & Son, local funeral directors, had charge. He is survived by his father, Abner McDonald, and one brother, Glenn McDonald. Several other relatives also survive him. Springs Valley Herald (January 22, 1931) Obituary Jack Condra McDonald, son of Abner and Cora A. Condra McDonald, was born in West Baden, August 9th, 1907, and departed this life January 13th, 1931, at the home of his uncle, Thomas Condra and his aunt, Vica Condra, in the town of French Lick, aged 23 years, 5 months and 4 days. His mother departed this life when Jack was six years old and he and his brother Glenn took up their home with their uncle and aunt, Tom and Vica Condra. Jack went through the common schools of French Lick and was a graduate of the French Lick High School. He had one preparatory term at Oakland College. Jack was a good boy to his uncle and aunt and his friends and deeply appreciated the kindness shown him by them. In his last sickness he often mentioned the tender manner in which his father, brother, and Uncle Tom and Aunt Vica, had treated him, and expressed the hope that they might be rewarded for the faithful service and attention given him in the closing hours of his life. At the age of 13 Jack was converted and became a member of the M. E. Church of French Lick. To his credit it can be truthfully said that he never smoked a cigar, cigarette or used tobacco in any form, that being the request of his Aunt Vica Condra. Some six weeks ago Jack was stricken with influenza and apparently in a few day he had recovered, but he had a relapse and as the result this affected his heart, and while the best medical attention possible in the Valley was given by his father, his uncle and aunt and every aid possible for relief for his suffering was given, he told his father, his Uncle Tom and Aunt Vica Condra that the end was near and he was conscious of the serious condition and told them death was near and he was prepared to meet the call of his Master. Five years ago Jack became a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of French Lick, and was a member in good standing at the time of his death. CARD OF THANKS We wish to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks for the kindness and sympathy shown by the neighbors and friends during the sickness and death of Jack McDonald, also especially do we wish to thank Rev. Meredith and Rev. Decker and the Odd Fellow Lodge of French Lick for their consoling words and Mr. Ritter for his efficient service. I was the sixth child of and Elizabeth Esther Dutton Young. I was small but firm fleshed and red. My hair was "golden red" and my skin pinkish red, causing my father to nick name me "pinkie". It was a typical March night for the state of Idaho, cold and windy. My mother wrote the following poem, concerning the night of my birth: " I remember the night, you came to me. The wind it blew and blew. I cradled you close, within my arms and thanked my God for thee." The land my father farmed was on the edge of the lava beds in Bingham County. In later years (about 1960) a modern 4 lane freeway was built on part of this land. My father moved his family from this farm, to one about 6 miles from Shelley, when I was about 2 years old. This farm was between Shelley and the Snake River. The great Western Canal (built to irrigate the farmland) ran directly behind our house. One of my earliest memories is of swimming in the canal. Everyone was very proud of me for learning to swim so young. We swam near the head gate where the water was shallow. There were many large smooth rocks along the canal bank. I remember my sisters and I using these rocks as dolls. Some of the rocks were long and narrow and some were shaped like a loaf of bread. In the summer they were warm to the touch and made very suitable dolls. We children were told that rattlesnakes lived among the rocks and brush along the canal. They said snakes sometimes bit and killed the dairy cattle that were put to pasture there. Perhaps this was true or perhaps we were told this so we wouldn't stray too far away from home and parents. I started school while we still lived on this farm. I rode the school bus each morning, along with my two brothers and three sisters to the small town of Shelley. In the spring, shortly after my 7th birthday we moved to another farm, farther west, on the Hays Project. This land also was very close to the lava beds. January 1930 - I think the families move to this new farm was an indication of better times. The family now consisted of nine children. My father was the proud owner of a model T Ford. He was even prouder of his matched team of five black horses. We children had two horses to ride. One we called Big Red and the other was Tiny, our red Shetland pony. We used to race them and Tiny usually won. She was tiny but very fast and she wouldn't let anyone get abreast of her. When Tiny tired of us children riding her she would head for the irrigation canal. Once there she would go into the water and roll over, losing her rider or riders. Then she would scurry up the bank and run off. Sometimes Tiny would buck us off, but she never hurt us. It wasn't very far to the ground. Another memory I have of this time of my life was the long hard winters. Several times we were snow bound. We children loved that. Not even the canvas covered school sleigh could get through the heavy snow drifts, so we had a vacation from school. The men used to play pinochle, sometimes all night long. My mother tended the babies and sang sad songs to us. She knew many songs and had a sweet clear singing voice. Some of the songs she sang to us were: "After the Ball was over" "Two Little Girls in Blue" "Poor Little Babes In the Woods" "Little Black Lamb" Once we had an especially bad blizzard. The wind formed a tunnel of sorts around our house. The ground was bare for about 20 feet on all sides of the house and then the snow had collected as high as the eaves of the house. We children packed the snow down and formed runs for our sleds. We pretended we were skiing and sled down the sides of the huge drift, again and again. Those of us who owned ice skates, skated on the Great Western Canal. In the summer months we played games such as "Run Sheep Run" and "Wolf" and "Hide and Go Seek". We girls slept on a bed on the front porch, my brothers slept on the lawn. They moved their beds outside in June and slept outside all summer. We swam in the irrigation ditch. When my Father watered the lawn and trees he would turn the water loose from the ditch and let it flood the front yard. We children would wade in the water and sail our make believe boats, made of a block of wood or an discarded pan. I was happy in this home - all my memories are happy. My parents bought a radio (RCA) and a Victrola. One record we had was "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" and my sister Faye and my youngest brother Joe were born while we lived on this farm. We moved to another farm about one mile away when I was eleven years old . March 4, 1934 - We moved to our new home on my brother Ben's ninth birthday. I was happy in this home also, but I was older now. In the spring I helped thin the sugar beets and then weed them. My father grew sugar beets, potatoes, wheat and alfalfa. I remember helping to cook for the haying and wheat threshing crews. I was allowed to go swimming in the Great Western Canal with my older brothers and sisters. My father made us a merry-go-round from a wagon wheel on a spindle and the usual swing. We had a basement at this home and we older girls slept in the basement. The older boys slept in a bunkhouse separate from the house. We owned a "Chivvy" car and in the winter my father contracted to drive the older children from the neighboring farms to the high school in Shelley. I attended public school 91. I was a healthy chubby little girl. My hair was dark red and I had more than my share of freckles. October 1934 - This was a sad time for us all. My oldest brother Jim and my sister Edith contacted typhoid fever. They were taken to the hospital in Blackfoot, Idaho, and all the other children were given inoculations and quarantined. On October 29 my brother James passed away. Edith was very, very ill but survived. As a result of the disease she lost all her hair. When her hair came back in it was naturally curly and very beautiful and always has been. Jim was only twenty years old. I think God took him because he was so good. He was very kind to our mother. He used to bring her small gifts from wages he received, working for other farmers. The thing I remember best about him was they way he always whistled, and he loved to dance. April 11, 1935 - My youngest sister Marie was born on April 11, 1935, the last of twelve children. We also had two marriages about this time. Zelda my oldest sister, married Dallas Hill Murdock and about a year later Dow married Thelma King. April 28, 1937 - On this date tragedy again struck our family. My father lost his life in an automobile accident. The car he was riding in was struck broadside by a truck in a blinding sleet and snow storm. He was killed instantly. This was very hard for us all to bear and brought many changes in our lives. I graduated from the 8th grade in May, 1937 and was valedictorian of my class. Shortly afterward my mother moved the family into Idaho Falls about twelve miles northeast of where we had been living. She did this so we older children could get work and help her to care for the large family of nine children, ages 2 to 18. Also a family of mostly girls could not hope to continue farming the land. I enrolled at O.E. Bell Junior High School as a freshman (9th grader). It was very difficult for me. I had been a leader in my small school for seven years. Now I found it hard to make friends. I was shy and lonely. My written work was good but I shied away from participating in discussions or activities. When it was time to begin my sophomore year in the regular high school I decided to continue with the job I had obtained and not return to school. I cared for a little boy, Linn Chaney, while his mother worked as a secretary. I gave most of the $3.50 per week that I earned to my mother. It wasn't much but it helped to buy bread, milk etc. Sometimes I bought articles of clothing for myself. In January 29, 1938 Edith two years older than I, was married to Eldon Laver Winder. In May of that same year my mother used insurance money from my father's (death) accident, to buy a small home at 255 Higbee Avenue in Idaho Falls. April 13, 1940 - It was from this small home that I was married on April 13, 1940. After Edith had married and left us I became closer to my sister Verda, who is three and a half years older than I. We began to go to public dances and parties and movies. In January 1939 we attended the wedding reception and dance for Beth and Tate Gray. It was at this dance that I met my future husband Floyd Vernon McDonald. We began dating in the summer and fall and became engaged in February 1940. Verda had been seeing a lot of a young man named Elton Call. We decided to have a double wedding. And so it was that on Saturday, April 13, 1940 at 4:00 P.M. I became Mrs. Vernon McDonald. We had invited a few friends and members of the family to the wedding. The ceremony was performed by Bishop John W. Rawlins. As it turned out his wife had been a former teacher of myself and Edith. The bishop and his wife give each couple a set of china as a wedding gift. We had very little money so we drove to Dubois Idaho for a two day honeymoon. Sunday evening we returned to Idaho Falls, and on Monday I went with my husband to his father's farm. This was our home for the next year. My father-in-law was a widower. He agreed to pay us $30 a month plus board and room . In return my husband would help farm the land and I would keep house and cook. There was also a fourth member of the family, my young brother-in-law, David. David was the same age as I (seventeen) but he had suffered all his life with asthma and was unable to work. Our first year of married life was a happy one. I liked being back on a farm and I got along will with my new family. I loved my young husband very much. February 1941 - My husband, Vernon and his father decided to give up farming. They sold all they had and we moved to Kelso, Washington. For several months we stayed with Vernon's Uncle Milt and his wife Edith. They were very good to us. Vernon worked at several jobs including driving a school bus. After several months he was hired by the Longview Fibber CO, a paper and box factory. We moved into our own apartment. April 1942 - The next year we moved into a small one room garage apartment. The rent was only $12.00 a month and it was clean and comfortable. We bought a bed-divan and a magazine rack - our first furniture purchases. We were especially happy now as we were expecting our first child. November 1942 - Vernon is making regular money and we decided to move into a house, owned by the same friend who owns our little garage apartment. It is on the same piece of property, so a very short move. We felt we needed more room for a family of three. The friends name is Kate Estes. The house has been divided into two apartments and we will live in the front apartment. Our good friends Lorenz and Marie Denton live in the back apartment. We are friends with several young couples and we bought our first car - a 1938 Ford. We live at 805 Elizabeth St. January 2, 1943 - On this day I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I was attended by Dr. Shaw. I went to the hospital about noon, and was given something to induce labor. The baby came at 11: P.M. Vernon left his job at the box factor to come be with me. My sister, Zelda, was also with me, and I am thankful for that. I was a wonderful experience, becoming a mother. She has reddish gold hair and blue eyes. Her name is Margaret (nicknamed Peggy). Our country is at war with Japan and Germany. Vernon tried to enlist but wasn't accepted because his heart is on the wrong side and he has a hernia. He has left his job at the box factory to take a job at the shipyards in Vancouver, Washington. He will be building baby aircraft carriers for Henry J. Kaiser. He is an electricians apprentice and hopes to become a journeyman electrician someday. April 17, 1944 - I now have a little son. he was born early this morning (2:00 A.M.). He is also a beautiful baby with dark hair and blue (brown) eyes. We named him James Russell for my brother Jim and for Vernon's brother Russell, who died in infancy. We are very thankful, proud and happy. January 2, 1945 - We are moving again. My father-in-law has bought a home at 815 South 6th St. He wants us to share it with him. He is 70 years old and lonely. He loves his grandchildren and is good with them. I hope we can be happy. The next few years are good ones. Vernon's work is not too reliable but he has his journeyman's card and enjoys his trade. We have some good friends in Peggy and Ray Nicholson. My sister Alta is making her home with us also. October 17, 1947 - Our second son was born to us this day. He was born about 5:00 A.M. He is strong and sturdy at 8 1/2 lb. He also has dark hair like his father. I am 24 years old and weigh 115 lb. This has been an easy and unforgettable birth. Dr. Davis was to have delivered the baby but refused to come at night. Dr. was at the hospital attending another mother and delivered my baby too. I took no anesthesia - nor needed none. The birth was natural and a tremendous experience. I am very thankful for my new son. Life is very good. We named this baby Vernon Dale. Time passes quickly - some times are good, some rather hard. The children start kindergarten and first grade. Peggy has long blonde hair. She is a sweet _____, good child. I like to make her little dresses and pajamas for the boys. I enjoy sewing very much, I also like to read. Once Peggy falls against a window, it breaks and she is cut badly on the temple. It takes several stitches to close the wound. Jimmy is a quiet child. He has a very merry laugh. I love my children very, very much. Vern is also a delightful baby. His hair is quite dark. May 1948 - When Vern was about 8 months we had a bad flood. We had to leave our home for three weeks. Our good friend Lorenz Denton helped us move our household and personal things. We lived in his house for 3 weeks along with the Nickolson family. The church would have helped us if we would have needed them. I am taking the children to Sunday School occasionally. I do not drive and the meetings are held in Longview, a neighboring town. I am secretary-treasurer for the PTA for Kindergarten children. 1952 - I have found a good friend in Ruth Stewart and also Mrs. Fox and Leah Town. I still enjoy reading and sewing. I am a den-mother for Jim. I enjoy this very much. Betty Turner is my assistant. All told, I am a den-mother for 3 years. March 20, 1953 - I am a mother once again. We have a precious baby girl. She was born about 11:00 A.M. We needed the money so Vernon went to work and we had Ruth Stewart go to the hospital with me. Vernon left work early and came to the hospital. This was a difficult pregnancy and a hard birth but now I feel very thankful and very happy. We named our baby girl Patricia Jean. She has a tiny heat-shaped face, reddish gold hair and blue eyes. She is very beautiful. May 1957 - Patricia is now four years old. She has not felt will for several weeks. We take her to the Doctor for special tests. After three weeks they finally determine she has tuberculosis. They have a new drug to treat her with and they hope to cure her in a years time. I take her to the Dr.'s office twice a week for shots and once a month we go to the county court house (health dept.) for x-rays. She is also taking pills twice daily to fight this disease. She is a very good girl - never cries when the nurse gives her the shot. Sometimes after we have been to the Dr.'s office for shots I buy her a small gift. Vernon is not very will either. He has quite severe asthma attacks. His father who is now 80 years old is very frail. He has been operated on for perforated ulcer and has not recovered his strength. Sometimes he is difficult to care for, but I love him. He is a fine man and has always been good to me. Vernon has been away working in Coos Bay, Oregon. March 10, 1958 - Patricia's tuberculosis has been arrested. Her x-rays are clear except for scar tissue. She looks much better and the shots and other treatment have been stopped. I am so very thankful. Pop (Grandpa McDonald) is the one who is seriously ill now. He seems to just be wasting away. Vernon is working in Anacortes, Washington. April 10, 1958 - Vernon had another severe asthma attack. He was hospitalized in Anacortes and I had a friend drive our car there so we could bring him home. We had to put Grandpa McDonald in a rest home. May 1958 - My dear father-in-law passed away on June 21, 1958. He was 81 years old. He died quietly in his sleep and was buried in the Kelso Odd fellow Cemetery. We will all miss him very much. June, 1958 - Vernon had to leave his job at Anacortes because the severe asthma attack. He is still unable to work and is taking tests to determine cause of the asthma. We decided to rent our home and go to Idaho for the summer. We hope Vernon will be able to regain his strength and find work. We leave on July 3, 1958. Vernon is under another attack and cannot even help pack the rented trailer with our household belongings. Mr. Strader, a neighbor, helps the boys and I pack and tie a covering over the trailer. We leave about 5:00 A.M. hoping Vernon's attack will lesson as we leave the area, but he gets steadily worse. I have only had my driver's license a few months, but I am driving the car with the attached trailer as fast as the law allows. The attack is critical, he is gasping and fighting for each breath. I drive faster hoping to bring the attention and help of a highway patrol car. Finally we reach Hood River, Oregon. It is about 7:00 A.M. there are a few people on the street and we ask for the police station, once there we ask them to direct us to the hospital. The attendants bring a wheel-chair and rush Vernon inside to an oxygen tent. They also give him adrenaline to help him fight the attack. The children and I spend the day in a city park across from the hospital. We have money but are reluctant to use it for a motel, so we sleep in the car that night. About 10:A.M. on July 4, they released him from the hospital and we go on our way. We arrive safely in Idaho Falls, rent a house at 1734 17th Street and Vernon goes to work. We have a wonderful year with all the family. Peggy attends Idaho Falls High School, Jim goes to O.E. Bell Jr. High and Vern to hawthorn Elementary school. Patricia attends kindergarten the spring of 1959. Peggy also attends Mutual while we live here and I am asked to teach a Sunday School class. Work is not always regular for Vernon, though and in the spring he goes to work in Georgetown building a cement plant. That job is completed in May and he goes to California looking for work. he goes to work for Brian Bigley and sends for us to join him. We send our household goods by van-truck and board a train for Sacramento. July 1959 - We arrive in Sacramento after midnight about July 24th. Vernon and Tony meet us at the depot. Tony Bartausky our brother-in-law (husband of Marie) are living in a 3 room cottage off of Auburn Blvd. We spend one night in a motel but it is very expensive so we ask their landlady to let us all stay in the cottage until we can find a house to rent. The weather is exceptionally hot. We have 11 days of over 100 degrees weather. We have money to rent a house but they are hard to find. Many refuse to rent to families with children. It takes almost a week but we are able to rent an unfurnished house at 3340 Mayfair Drive. At first we have to sleep on the floor and eat from paper plates but Vernon's work is regular and in a few months we are able to buy second hand table and chairs a sofa and beds. The weather continues hot and we are not used to it but we are enjoying living in California. Marie and her 3 children join us and they rent a house in Carmichael. In the fall Patricia is enrolled in the 1st grade at Winterstein school, Vern starts 7th grade at Jonas Salk and Jim and Peggy enroll at Encina High School. It is a brand new school. Jim is a sophomore and Peggy a Junior. When Peggy graduates in 1961 it is the first graduating class from Encina. Jim graduates a year later in 1962. Peggy attends B.Y.U. 1961-1962. She is very happy there. I have been called to teach the Rainbow class in primary. I started to teach in 1960. I love working in Primary. 1963 - Jim has been attending American River Junior College and Peggy has attended spring semester at B.Y.U. Jim now wants to join the Air Force. He has been dating a young girl named Linda Sue Wardlaw. Jim enlists in the Air Force in June and on August 30, 1963 he and Linda are married at the Air Base in Amarillo Texas. We are happy to have Linda become a member of our family. She is a small girl with very pretty red hair. After Jim finishes basic training he is stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado and Linda joins him there. It is about this time that I am called to serve as the Primary secretary. I enjoy this calling very much. It is easier for me than teaching a class. Patricia attends Primary regularly. She is now 10 years old and Peggy is 20 years old. Peggy works as a salesgirl for May Gims, a specialty shop. 1964 - I am now a grandmother, a baby boy was born to Linda and Jim on February 18, 1964 in a Denver hospital. The baby has red hair like his mother and they give him his father's name James Russell McDonald Junior. In the fall they come back to Sacramento on leave and we get to see our new grandchild. 1965 - This is a very memorable year with several important events taking place. My sister Zelda (who has been living in Stockton) passed away in May 4, 1965. She was 48 years old. She died of a cerebral hemorrhage. My mother and stepfather (Dad Winder) and all my brothers and sisters came to the funeral. In June 1965 Vern graduates from Encina High School the same school his sister Peggy and brother Jim graduated from. The exercises were held at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. Vern has enjoyed his high school years. He was active in school sports (football, wrestling and track). Early in July we moved to a new home in Carmichael (3117 Terry Way). At first we rent the house from a friend (Ray Abramson) but later on we buy the house. It is a nice home. We are quite happy here. Vernon is able to put his card into the local union and work is more plentiful. . Peggy has been dating a young man who is a recent covert to the church. His name is Buddy Lee Branson. He is a fine young man and we all like him very much. In February they become engaged and are married in the Oakland Temple on September 11, 1965. They make their first home in Sacramento. We now are members of a new ward Carmichael ward), and I have been called by president Melvin Woodland to serve as the stake primary secretary. This makes me very happy and proud. I hope I will make a good secretary. Vern spent the summer working in Idaho Falls for his Uncle Preston. He is now enrolled for college at American River Junior college. Patricia goes to the 7th grade at Winston Churchill Jr. High. She is now attending Mutual and making many new friends. 1966 - We were saddened to lose our stepfather in death. We spent a weeks vacation in Idaho Falls in July. The family had a big 4th of July camp out. We had only been home a short while when word came Dad Winder was critically ill. I and Patricia drove back to Idaho Falls with Uncle Ver and Dennis and Bart. Edith is flying there from Indiana where she has been visiting Saundra, Dad Winder passed away in July. My brother Ben moves into a small house with my mother. In August he too suffers a cerebral hemorrhage and passes away. He is 41 years old. Bud, Peggy, Vern, Patricia and I drive back to Idaho Falls for the funeral. 1967 - Vern has been called to serve a mission in Great Britain. He is very glad to be going on a mission and his father and I are very proud and happy. Bishop Seamons plans a special sacrament meeting and asks Vern and I to both speak. Vern left for his mission on January 9 and Jim returned from a years duty in Vietnam on January 8th. Jim is now stationed at McClellan Air Base in Sacramento. This makes us happy as we will be able to see more of his and his family. Bud and Peggy live in Roseville and Bud manages a Denny's restaurant there. 1968 - I attended the Primary General Conference in Salt Lake City in April. It was a very choice experience. I rode to Salt Lake City in a car with 4 other board members. Ruth Lofgren is the Stake primary president. I enjoy working with her in the primary. We stayed at the Hotel Utah. The family also took a vacation to visit the family in Idaho Falls in July. We had another family camp out on July 4th at Island Park Reservoir. Sweet Linda has given us another little grandson. He was born on June 7, 1968. He also has red hair but his eyes are going to be brown where Jimmy's are blue. he is a good baby - very good-natured and sunny. In November Jim is transferred to a 3 year tour in Japan. He leaves 1 week before thanksgiving. Linda and the boys leave to join him on New Years Day (69). 1969 - I was privileged to attend Primary General Conference on April 3-4-5, in Salt Lake City. Ruth Horner is the Stake Primary President and a good friend. This was a very special spiritual experience. I enjoy may calling and love my fellow board members. Peggy and Bud adopted a precious baby boy in September. He was about 6 weeks old, having been born on August 6, 1969. They live near us and we all enjoy him so much. This gives us 3 little grandsons. Bud and Peggy give their son the name of Christopher Brady Branson. Vern came home from his mission in January. It is wonderful to have him home again. He enrolled at A.R. Jr. College for spring semester and in the fall he enrolled at B.Y.U. in Provo. In the summer a friend from England visited him. 1970 - We are very proud of Pat this year. She was elected to be a song leader at her high school (La Sierra). She also was selected to attend the first Laurel conference in Provo, Utah. This is her 6th year at the church girl's camp at camp Nauvoo. Vernon and I go to all the football games and watch Pat do her stuff. She is very happy and is a real good song leader . The school has a good season and only loses one game. Vernon and I go to Idaho for the deer hunting. He goes hunting with Joe and Dow and Elton and bags two deer. Vern is attending B.Y.U. and begins to date a very special girl Laura Hallmeyer. At Thanksgiving time they become engaged. March 17, 1971 - Today I am 48 years old. I feel very grateful for my many blessings. I am in good health and have a loving husband wonderful children, a nice home to care for, and a calling in the church that I enjoy very much. Today is a typical March day - a bit windy and chilly, but the sky is as blue as a day in June and the sun is shining. I walked to the church for Relief Society, and home again. Patricia is cooking dinner for me tonight and Peggy and Bud are coming in to join us. Patricia only goes to school half a day now. I drove her old 1960 Ford to the bank and when I came home she had baked me a cake - chocolate with boiled icing in green and white with coconut. I received a birthday card from Vern and Laura from B.Y.U. and I have a package from Jim and Linda in Japan. Pat is elected "Queen of the Senior Ball". I help her make a pink formal to wear to the dance. Her escort is Ken Krenzin, and she is very pretty and very happy. I attend Primary General Conference in April and visit Vern in Provo. He and Laura and I go to dinner at a "seafood" restaurant. They plan to be married in the summer. July 1971 - Vernon and I go to Vancouver to visit Marie and Darwin and family on 4th of July. On July 5th we receive telephone call from Jim. He and Linda and the boys are at McChord Air Base near Tacoma. We go pick them up and drive back to Sacramento. On July 9th they go to Oakland temple and are married and have the boys sealed to them. On July 31st Vern and Laura are married in the Oakland temple. Peggy and Jim and Linda go to the temple with them. We have an" Open House" here for them in the evening. I think it was quite successful. Many of our friends were here to share our joy and happiness. Jim had to go back to Japan directly after ceremony, but Linda and the boys stay over until late in August. Mrs. Keleher accompanies Linda back to Japan. Jim has one more year of his tour left. Pat graduated from High School (La Sierra) at the memorial auditorium. We have a buffet luncheon afterward. Bert and Edell and Peg and Bud are with us. Pat's friend Val Herriage comes to stay with us as her parents moved to Idaho Falls. Val is a sweet girl. I have come to love her very much. She and Pat get along real well. Pat buys herself a 1964 comet and goes to work at an answering service and the for K-Mart. In the fall she enrolls at American River Jr. College. May 1972 - Vernon and I took an early vacation this year. There was just the two of us. We left Carmichael Friday afternoon and drove to Reno where Vernon had some fun playing the slot mac More About LELA YOUNG: Baptism (LDS): October 31, 1931 Christening: May 06, 1923 Endowment (LDS): April 08, 1986 Sealed to child (LDS): June 21, 1938 Children of FLOYD MCDONALD and LELA YOUNG are: 159. i.
