Peter Wolverton was a farmer who lived in Linn County, Iowa with his wife Emily (Henrietta (Dow) Wolverton.  Peter was born in Moristown, NJ on 3/15/1834 and died 4/12/1914 in Central City, Linn County, Iowa.  He married Emily 3/8/1855 in Erie County, PA.  Here is a brief history of Peter:
 
Peter Wolverton was born on March 15, 1834 in New Jersey.  At some point prior to 1855 he moved to Pennsylvania.  Peter had given a valentine to Emily  in Pennsylvania when he was almost 21 years old.  Emily was 27 years old and had been orphaned when she was H. Dow 1853, before they were married.  I still have this valentine.  He was married to Emily on March 8, 1855 in Pennsylvania.  Emily had been orphaned when she was 16 and had the responsibility of caring for her seven younger brothers and sisters.  Mary Gertrude Wolverton was the first child and was born on May 11, 1857 in Pennsylvania.  Peter and family may have moved to Jackson or Linn County, Iowa in 1858.  In the 1860 census he was in Jackson County, Iowa with a brother of Emily and Emily was in Pennsylvania with another brother.
 
Peter had blue eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion.  
 
Peter was drafted into Company B of the 15th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers for a one year term of service on September 24, 1864.  He was a private.  The 15th Iowa Infantry joined the march from Atlanta to the sea and from Savannah through the Carolinas to Richmond and on to Washington, D.C.  The Regiment went into camp at Alexandria near Washington on May 19, 1865.  On May 24, they passed in review before the President and Lieutenant General Grant.  Private Peter Wolverton was mustered out of the service on June 2, 1986 at Washington, D.C.
 

In the 1870 census, Peter Wolverton is listed as a farmer and the value of his personal property is $300. He and his family were living in Central Point, Otter Creek Township, Iowa. Emily was born 5/23/1837 in Cataraugus County, NY and ded 3/3/1901 in Waubeek, Linn County, Iowa.  Children include 1) Mary Gertrude b. 5-11-1857 in PA.  Died before 1898.  Married a James Woddard 10/16/1875. 2) Carry Jane b. 8-24-1862 in Iowa.  Married a Morris Miles in Iowa. 3) Della May b. 6/7/1864 in Jackson County, Iowa and d. 9-4-1945 in California.  She married Frank Vail 11/18/1884 and had three children Otis (my grandfather), Augusta, and Faye.  4)  Millie Ann b. 5/19/1867 and died same year. 5) Gala Elizabeth b. 6/1/1969 in Iowa and died 1885 in Iowa.  6)  Jessie Leah b. 8/5/1872 in Iowa and d. 1905 in California. and 7) Almon Eugene b. 5/25/1875 in Iowa and died 8/15/1887 in Iowa.
