Copied from diary of George Wilson Smith (b. October 12, 1850. According to family bible he was born "Eight miles east of Cedar Rapids Iowa at a place called Westport.", Linn Co., Iowa) son of George C. Smith and Sara (Torrance) Smith, beginning October, 1874

30 Thrashed all day.

31 Thrashed in the forenoon and came home in the afternoon and _____________ ___________ at three o'clock and Jesse and me and Unis and Abbie went down to the singing school at Mr. ______ and coming home Abbie said that I got my arm out of place.

Nov.
1 Went up to Mt. Vernon and got my hair cut and shaved and came back and went over to Uncle Hughs (Hugh Torrance) and eat dinner and came back to James (James Torrance Smith, His brother) and went over to Hughs and stayed all night.

2 Went over to Sills and thrashed his buckwheat and came home.

3 Helped to hall clover for High McGeothing and stayed all night at Highs.

4. Hauled clover for High Mc and hauled the machine out to Buckleys and came home through Lisbon.

5 Built a fence around the stacks and work at the fence row and went down to Mr. Peaks and went up to Grandmothers (Margaret Cunningham Torrance) and went on home and eat supper and went down to Mr. Peaks.

6 Helped to gather corn at Uncle Hughs (Torrance) and up to Hayzletts Hall to see the Japnees family perform.

7 Helped to pick corn for Uncle Hugh (Torrance) in the forenoon and came out home in the afternoon.

8 Sunday was at home and went over to John Butler and came home and went over to Mrs. Stearns and came home and went down to Uncle Hughs (Torrance) and Daniel (Torrance) and me went out a snipe hunting and I went over to Uncle James (Torrance?)and stayed all night.

9 Thrashed for Uncle Stewart (William Stewart Torrance) and moved up to Uncle Hughs (Torrance).

10 Thrashed for Uncle Hugh and went up to Lisbon with Homer Thompson and to Mt. Vernon and went home with Homer and stayed all night and Jim came home from Kansas.

11 Was at Mrs. Thompsons and went down to Uncle and got my colt and went over to Grandmothers and went down to Uncle George. Went up to Uncle Hughs in the forenoon and pick corn in the afternoon.

12 Drove the hogs over to Lisbon and Stewart had twelve and Grandmother three and they got five cents and a half per pound in the afternoon we fixed the calf pen rack cleaned stables made door to wood house.

13 Pulled nails and done a little of everything.

14 Grandmother and Stewart went away and I took them up to Mt. Vernon and came home and went up to Hughs and got him to come down and hook the crout churn and I fixed around the rest of the day.

15 Sunday stayed at home till evening and went up to Hughs and stayed till Lizzie (Torrance) came home from the school house and then I came home.

16 It rained all day and I could not work.

17 We cleaned house all day.

18 Park Torrance and me hauled hay all day.

19 Park and me finished the stacks of hay and commenced to haul wood and it snowed so we had to quit work. Park worked three fourths of a day.

20 It snowed a little in the forenoon and I chopped wood in the afternoon and went to town in the evening.

21 Went to mill in the forenoon chaud around in the afternoon and got a letter from uncle John. (John Hancock Smith or John Torrance)

22 Sunday Stayed at home all day and Grandmother got home.

23 Stewart and me killed a pig and we took a piece of it up to Hughs.

24 Stewart and me went over to Lisbon and got the horses shod.

25 I went over to Lisbon and got my pants and vest and came home through Mt. Vernon and helped Stewart haul two loads of wood out of the pasture.

26 Went up to meaton and went down to Uncle Georges and got dinner and went up to J. Stewarts to thrash.

27 Thrashed all day.

28 Thrashed for John and Robert Stewart and came home that night.

29 Sunday went out home and rode Charley, Uncle James horse.

30 Came back from Linn Grove and went and hunted the horses and took Charley home and went down to Bob Roses and helped to set the wood saw and went up to Mt. Vernon.

December 1874

1 Commenced to go to school and went to school all day.

2 Went to school all day and went over to the school house to hear the talk about chess.

3 Went to school and went over to Uncle James (Torramce) and eat supper and Lefu and me went to the debate and took Unis and Abbie.

4 Friday went to school.

5 Saturday chopped apple tree in forenoon and went out to Linn Grove.

6. Sunday Went up to Bruces and got his saddle for what he owes me and came home in the afternoon.

7 Went to school and got excused from grammar and Jessie & ____ & Danial & Park & Wilson & Abbie & Lillie & Mary & Unis was here till bedtime.

8 Went to school and we all went up to Uncle Hughs to spend the evening.

9 Went up to Uncle Hughs after school to get the boys to help me do some examples.

10 Went to school all day and pop and mother and grandmother started to Ind.

11 Went to school all day and in the evening I went up to Mr. Scotts and a horse up there to D. Scott and stopped at Peaks as I came home.

12 Saturday I went over to Rob Roses and up to Uncle Hughs and back home and went to town in the evening.

13 Sunday Went to meaton in the forenoon and Dan Peak stayed all night with me.

14 Went down home with Dan Peak and went to school and went down to Peaks in the evening and Uncle Hughs folks was there.

15 Went to school all day and had a Spelling school at night.

16 Went to school all day and was at home all night.

17 Went to school all day and Park and me went out to Linn Grove and came home that night.

18 Went to school and got excused at noon till the afternoon recess and went to town and got some Brandy peaches for Dan and me and went to debate.

19 Saturday Sawed wood and went up to Linberg to a shooting match and came home and went up to Hughs and eat supper.

20 Sunday Went down to Peaks and stayed awhile and came home and went up to Thompsons.

21 Went to school all day and went up to Hughs and Daniel and me went up to Lisbon and came home past Mt. Vernon.

22 Homer and Daniel and me went up to town in the forenoon and went to school in the afternoon.

23 Went up to Hughs and went to school all day and went down to McFarlands after a cow and came home. Wash for Earaciplus
Sulfate of Zink and Borax equal parts in Rain water & wash the parts afected 2 a day.

January 1875

1 Went from Uncle James up to Mt. Vernon and came back and eat breakfast and went up to Mt. Vernon and came back with Uncle Alex (Alexander Torrance) and went up to Mt. Vernon with D.H.P.(Danial Park) and D.D.T(Danial Torrance). and C.J .and came back and eat dinner at Uncle Hughs went down to the debate and went up to Jim Buryes to a dance. 1.50 fare

2 Came home from the dance and eat breakfast and went up to Cedar Rapids and got home a little after dark and Jim Thompson stayed all night.

3 Sunday stayed home all day.

4 Went to school all day.

5 Went to school all day and went down to Peaks to spend the evening and McFarland was there.

6 J.C.T. (Jim Thompson) stayed all night with me and I went over to school and D.H.P.(Dan Peak) & Homer Thompson & me went wolf hunting & they eat dinner with me.

7 Went to school all day and there was a spelling school at night and I was over.

8 Went to school and we had a Debate and D.H.P. (Dan Peak) and his side had some speaking and it is a very cold day and stormy day.

9 It was too cold to do any thing and was down to Clarks & up to Uncle Hughs & D.H.P.(Dan Peak) & D.D.T.(Danial Thompson) & C.T. & me went to town & D.H. Peak suppered with me and I went down to Peaks & stayed all night.

10 Sunday came home and I stayed home all day & DHP (Danial Peak) was up a while.

11 Went to school all day & I went down to Peaks & PCJ came home with me and stayed all night.

12 Stayed at home & helped to saw wood & Mr. Peak & Uncle Hugh and Uncle James helped and I and D.H.P. & J.C.T. went up to John Stones and I got home at nine o'clock and I put my pipe up and resolved to quit smoking till the 22 of February.

13 Went to school all day and I and A.V.P. & J.C.T. & E.P. & T.H.P. went to spelling school down on Standing Rock Prarie & E. McF (McFarland) took E.P. home D.H.P. (Danial Peak) took M.N.F. home and I came home the same way that I went.

14 Went to school all day and Stewart was a coming from town & we all rode home and I asked A.V.P a Q and she said Y and we played fruit basket and snatch pards.

15 Went to school and went up to Lisbon with the Caldwell boys & got back at the afternoon recess I spoke my piece and could not say it all and we had a debate on the Grange question and came home and went down to the debate and went up to Horns to the dance and Cal Tompson came home with me and stayed all night.

16 Went up to Mrs. Tompsons & Homer & me went up to traid horses with Charley McElelland & could not do it & then went to Lisbon & came home.

17 Sunday stayed at home till noon and went down to Clarks and came home and stayed at home the rest of the day and it snowed.

18 Went to school all day and Mary T. stayed all night.

19 Went to school all day and went to Grange to the school house and Huffman said to stop dancing.

20 Went to school all day & there was a spelling school and went over and there was some just from town.

21 Went to school in the forenoon and Stewart and me went to town and stayed home all night.

22 Went to school all day and T.H.P.s side spoke and we had a debate on school law.

23 Went over to Uncle James and got a teem and sawed wood and finished and Stewart and me cleaned stable and it snowed and I went up home with Homer Tompson and stayed all night and we went over to Lisbon.

24 Sunday Was at Mrs. Tompsons and the boys and me went down to John Tines and came back eat dinner and come home.

25 Went to school all day and Sillie & D.D.T. stayed all night here.

26 Went to school all day and went up to Uncle Hughs to spend the evening & E. & A.P. was there and we got home at nine o'clock.

27 Went to school all day and went over to school house to a lecture and went down to the Prarie to a spelling school.

28 Went to school all day and Homer Tompson and me went around to see what folks would give for the nectie festival. Homer stayed all night with me.

29 Went to school all day went to town in the afternoon and was back in time for recess in the afternoon had a Essay Subject Traveling went down to Peaks to get my over halls.

30 Stewart and me helped Peak saw wood and we did not get to saw any till afternoon and then it snowed and we quit and came home.

31 Sunday stayed at home all day.

February 1875

1 Went to school all day Went up to town and got the candy for the nectie festival.

2 Went to school all day and we had a festival at the school house and I went and D.H.P. stayed all night with me.

3 We over to get the apples at the school house and we had school till recess and it was so cold that the teacher dismissed school.

4. Went to school all day and Pop got home from Indiana.

5 Went to school all day and mother and grandmother came home from Indiana a J.T. & H.T. & H.J. was here in the evening.

6. Hauled hay in the forenoon and one load of wood in the woodhouse and took J.P. & D.H.P. & H.L.T. took the candy back up to Mr. Sessions and I had $1.75 after we paid for the candy.

7 Sunday S.T. & S.C. & me went up to Mt. Vernon to meaton and in the evening P.C.T. & D.H.P. & J.C.T. & me & Mary & Lillie & Eunice & A.N.P. went up to Lisbon to meaton.

8 Went to school all day.

9 Went to school all day.

10 Went to school all day & went up to Uncle Hughs in evening.

12 Started to go to Cedar Rapids and went up to Mt. Vernon & came down with the teacher to school & only had school till noon and D.D.T. & P.C.T. & me went down to the Prarie school a visiting and came home and done my feeding & went up to Uncle Hughs & the boys and me went to the debate. stayed all nite with me.

13 Stewart & me hauled in hay & hauled one last load of rails from down at the creek cleaned the stable and shelleed corn to take to the mill.

14 S.T. and Grandmother & me went to the meaton in the forenoon & stayed at home in the evening.

15 Went to school all day.

16 Went to school all day & went over to grange in evening.

17 Went to school and go sick and went up to Uncle James till evening and they brought me over home.

18 Was sick all day.

19 Was sick all day.

20 Went to town & got some medicine and came home through Lisbon.

21. Went up to Mt. Vernon to meaton Mr. & Mrs. Hanna came home with us from meaton went down to the Prarie to meaton in afternoon D.D.T. & P.C.T. & me went up to Mt. Vernon to meaton in the evening.

22 Went over to school and got my books in forenoon and S.T. & G.M.T. and me went to Mt. Vernon in afternoon.

23 S.T. & me went up to Cedar Rapids and came back home same day.

24 Took a cow up to Mt. Vernon for beef S.T. & G.M.T. went up to and S.T. & me came home through Lisbon.

25 Went up to Mt. Vernon & got some beef & S.T. went along.

26 S.T. & me hauled in some wood to the woodhouse & went up to Mt. Vernon in the afternoon.

27 S.T. & S.C. & S.C. & me went out to Linn Grove & came home and went down to the Prarie to the concert.

28 It was so cold that we did not go to meaton. Grandmother (Margaret Cunningham Smith) was married 55 years ago today.

March 1875

1 Stayed at home all day and went over to Mr. Hoffmans to practice in the evening and went to the school meaton & went up Uncle Hughs and stayed all night.

2 Came home from Uncle Hughs went down to Mr. Peaks and got Mrs. Peak and brought her up to our house and S.T. & me went up to Mt. Vernon and came home and took Mrs. Peak home and came home and stayed home all night.

3 Stayed home all day.

4 Went up to Mt. Vernon and came home and stayed all night.

5 Went to school and Uncle Jo Marford was there.

6. Went over to the school house and helped to fix up for the exhibition.

7. S.T. & G.N.T. & me went up to meaton twise.

8 Went over to the schoolhouse & over to Mr. Hoffmans and got tickets for the exhibition over at the school house and had the exhibition that night.

9 Went out to Linn Grove and stayed at Bruces all night.

10 Came home from Linn Grove and went down to Peaks and went over to Sargents and stayed all night.

11 Went up to Mrs. Tompsons & went to town & Homer & me went down to Lisbon and came up to Mt. Vernon and came home.

12 Went up to Mt. Vernon to help mother fix the house and came home and stayed all night.

13 Went up to Mt. Vernon and went up to Cedar Rapids and came home and stayed all night at Mrs. Tompsons.

14 Was at Mrs. Tompsons and H. & me went over to Lisbon and Mt Vernon & came home through the fields and fed my horse and came home and stayed all night.

15 Went up to Mt. Vernon & traided my horse off for a watch and came home through Lisbon and got home and stayed at home all night. Was a going to go to Kansas with Ballard but he backed out.

16 Stayed at home all day and it stormed all day.

17 Hauled hay all day.

18 Was a seating down on the creek and went down to Peaks and D.H.P. came up with me and seated awhile & D.H.P. & P.C.T. eat dinner here & J.C.T. & D.D.T. was here awhile.

19 Went up to Mt. Vernon and S.W. & G.M.T. went along after we came home S.W. and me shelt some corn to take to mill & P.C.T. & Homer was here.

20 Homer and me went up to Lisbon and stayed all day & came home through Mt. Vernon and D.H.P. & P.C.T. was here till bedtime.

21 Sunday G.M.T. & S.T. & S.C. & me went up to meaton & S.T. & me went down to the Prarie in the afternoon.

22 Commenced to chop and broke my ax on the first tree & went to town to get another and Lizzie went along & we all went up to Hughs to spend the evening.

23 Chopped all day and S.T. went to mill in the afternoon.

24 Chopped all day and picked patatoes over in the cellar in the evening after we quit work.

25 Chopped all day.

26 Chopped and I went up to Uncle Hughs and eat dinner and after dinner S.T. and me finished to chop the fence row & S.T. and me went up to Uncle Hughs to a party and Caldwell & McFarland was there.

27 Filled the corn box in the stable then went up to Hughs and came home and cleaned the stable and shaved 1/2 28 G.N.T. & S.T. & S.C. & S.C. & me went up to meaton in forenoon ___ and J.C.T. went up to meaton in evening.

29 S.T. & me split rails and chopped wood all day.

30 S.T. & me chopped wood in forenoon in the afternoon we went up to see Caldwells and Ed McFarland start for Nebraska and S.T. & me come home and played Crocay & I went to Tompsons to spend the evening. 31 It rained last night so S.T. & me went up to Hughs to take G.N.T. & Lizzie up there. S.T. & me came back and eat dinner and in afternoon we split wood & posts.

April 1875

1 Choped wood all day.

2 Choped wood and in the afternoon S.T. went to town to get some clover seed & B was down and came over.

3 S.T. & me sowed clover seed and cleaned the stable in forenoon and choped wood in afternoon & we finished sowing clover seed..

4 G.N.T. & S.T. & me went out to Mrs. Gradeys funeral at Linn Grove & I went home and eat dinner G.N.T. & S.T. eat at Uncle Alex.

5 S.T. & me choped wood all day & I went down to Peaks and stayed a little while.

8 Went up to G.M.T. & ground my ax came back. Wrote to R.B.S.(Robert Bruce Smith, his fathers half brother) in forenoon & went out to see Geo. Pisel in afternoon.

9 Went over & helped Jesse haul in one load of hay & hauled one load of wood for me & went to town in afternoon.

11 Sunday went to church with mother, Lizzie Cole.

12 Commenced to chop wood for R.P. Rose choped a little while & had to quit on account of the snow D.N.P. D.D.T. was here.

13 Went down to Mr. Peaks & helped Don haul two small loads of hay in the barn & went to Mt. Vernon with D.D.T. choped wood at home till night got a letter from Mollie.

14 Helped Stewart haul a load of hay for the cattle & went out to the timber & choped wood and Stewart hauled a load home for me got my ancle hurt.

15 My ancle was sore & I went to town & Homer T. came home with me & we took my saw over to Mr. Hoffmans.

16 Went up to G.M.T. and fixed to kill my hog & I went down to Mr. Peaks & got it & killed it in afternoon it was 175 pounds.

17 Helped Stewart haul one load of hay & went to town came home & choped wood & Homer & Lucy was here.

18 Went down to Prarie school to meaton in the afternoon.

19 Skimed lard & went up to G.M.T. & choped wood till dinner choped wood for R.P. Rose in the afternoon.

20 Helped Stewart saw wood in forenoon & it snowed in afternoon.

21 Choped wood at home.

22 Hauled two loads of wood with Stewarts team & went up to town after mother.

23 Choped wood & went over to Hoffmans after my sow.

24 Went up to Mt. Vernon & went out to see Jo Scotts colts & got a letter from Mary Hall & wrote a letter to B.F. Smith.

25 Sunday went to meaton in forenoon & went to meaton over to school house & down to Peets mill.

26 Went out to Uncle Alex & Pop & Mother & Nancy went along.

27 Worked at my stable & Stewart helped me.

28 I raised my stable & Jesse & Lou & Jim & Homer & Stewart helped & Stewart & me cut the rafters & Jim & D.H.P. & Stewart helped me raise them in the afternoon.

29 Worked around at the stable & Stewart went & got a load of lumber in forenoon & D.H.P. helped me in the afternoon.

30 D.H.P. came up & helped me till it rained & we played twelve men morise.

31 Helped Stewart husk corn in forenoon & finished putting the roof on the stable.

April 1877

1 Sunday & Easter & Nancy & me stayed at home all day & wrote a letter to Evelyn Hall.

2 Choped wood for R.P. Rose & got a letter from Mollie.

3 Choped wood for R.P. Rose & mother & G.M.T. was down a visiting & Stewart helped me chop wood.

4 Stewart helped me chop wood till noon & I helped Stewart husk corn till Jim Tompson came down & John McCleland died.

5 Helped the Tompsons raise their stable.

6 Went to John McCleland Funeral & choped a little wood in the afternoon.

7 Went up to Mt. Vernon & came back & Nancy did not feel very well.

8 Sunday stayed at home all day.

9 Helped Stewart haul a load of hay for the cattle & worked at the stable in the afternoon.

10 Helped Stewart plant his potatoes & some for me & helped D.H.P. chop wood in afternoon.

11 Helped Stewart saw wood & mashed my tow & little finger.

12 Went up to Mt. Vernon with mother in forenoon & Nancy & some of the girls was up to G.M.T. & I was there to.

13 Went up to G.M.T. & came back & Nancy & me went down to Mr. Peaks a fishing.

14 Cleaned the yard & Nancy & me went a fishing down to the creek.

15 Sunday Nancy went to meaton & I stayed at home.

16 Bough old Jim off W.S. Torrance (William Stewart) & one stack of hay & harness & Pop & me went to hunt another horse.

17 Pop & me went out to Geo. A. Yeisley & got a four year old colt & came home & hauled a load of old hay from G.M.T.

18 Pop and me put up my corn pen.

19 It rained in the forenoon & I fixed some things for Nancy & went up and helped Jim Tompson put the floor in the stable.

20 Helped Thompson with their stable.

21 Fixed fence & hauled old stuf out of the barn yard & Pop helped me & went up to Barnes & got a load of corn.

22 Sunday Nancy went to meaton & I stayed at home in forenoon & went over to school house to Sunday school & to town in evening to attend meaton.

23 Fixed the road out in the field & Pop & Jim Tompson & me chopped wood for R.P. Rose

24 Hauled some corn from Barnes & I hauled & hauled manure out on the garden.

25 Commenced to plow & hauled a little hay.

26 Helped to take off the old roof a G.M.T. & I helped put the slats on.

27 It rained & I did not do anything in the forenoon & choped wood for R.P. Rose in the afternoon.

28 It rained all day & did not do anything.

29 Sunday it snowed & I stayed at home.

30 Went up to Mt. Vernon & went to look at a Jack up the river.

May 1877

1 Plowed for corn & plowed the potato patch & the garden.

2 Went out to plow & it would not scour & in the afternoon broke stocks & plowed.

3 Made garden & planted potatoes & Pop helped me.

4 Plowed all day.

5 Plowed all day & went over to Mr. Hoffmans after a sow & pigs.

6 Sunday Nancy went to meaton & I stayed at home.

7 It rained in forenoon & I n Jesse took my sow over to R.P. Rose.

8 Helped at Grandmothers to take off roof in forenoon & plowed in the afternoon.

9 Plowed in forenoon & made cow lot in the afternoon.

10 I went up to Grover & Jerry Tompsons & plowed in afternoon.

11 Took Kate my mare up to Frank Grovers Jack & harrowed in the afternoon.

12 Marked out & shelled seed corn.

13 Stayed at home in the forenoon & went to Sunday School in Afternoon.

14 Marked out for corn all day.

15 Planted corn & Jesse T. helped me with his team.

16 Chopped wood for R.P. Rose in the forenoon & planted corn & Jesse helped me with his team.

29 Went to John McCleland sale in the forenoon & harrowed & roaded in the afternoon.

30 Finished roading & went up to town & planted corn.

31 Choped wood for R.P. Rose in the forenoon & plowed corn & Pop and me fixed cabag ground in the afternoon.

June 1877

1 Pop & me hauled hay in forenoon & I plowed corn in the afternoon.

2 Plowed corn all day.

3 Sunday stayed at home.

4 Plowed corn all day.

5 Plowed corn in forenoon & plowed in the afternoon.

6 Plowed in the forenoon & harrowed & marked out in the afternoon.

7 Made a pig pen set out cabbage & stuck peas & beans & other things.

8 Cleaned out the stables & fixed slop barl and it rained in the afternoon.

9 Went down to Peets mill & chopped wood for R.P. Rose in the afternoon.

10 Stayed at home & Jim Tompson was here.

11 Went up to Lisbon & Mt. Vernon & helped Stewart fix fence in the afternoon.

12 Planted sweet corn & beans & pumkins.

13 Helped Stewart fix fence three fourths of a day & put my mare in the pasture.

14 Helped Stewart one half day & plowed corn.

15 Plowed corn all day.

16 Plowed corn all day.

17 Sunday Nancy & me went up to Mt. Vernon to meaton & to Sunday school.

18 Plowed corn & it rained & I howed weeds the rest of the day.

July 1877

8 Took Kate my mare out of the pasture.

16 Helped D.D. Torrance (Dianel Dike) one half day make hay.

17 Helped D.D. Torrance in forenoon & Geo. Peak in afternoon.

18 Helped Geo. Peak all day.

19 Helped Geo. Peak till half past four & worked old Jim.

20 Worked for R.P. Rose.

21 Helped at Hugh Torrances & worked old Jim.

23 Took Pop & Mollie to town & went to mill.

24 Helped Geo. Paek make Hay & worked old Jim.

25 Helped Geo. Peak make hay & worked old Jim.

26 Helped Geo. Peak bind oats till three o'clock & it rained.
