The duPont Manual Training High School athletes, homeless since the birth of their first brother 33 years ago, came into their own with the dedication of the duPont Stadium to them and to clean athletics Saturday afternoon. The Washington High School team of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, warriors of national fame, opposed Manual in the dedicatory game, and won by 6 to 0, in a struggle that long will be remembered. Defeat did not dim the day for Manual, for in the heroic loss to foes of such worth the men of Manual gained more glory than would have been theirs had they defeated a weaker opponent. The lone touchdown of the contest came in the second period of play, when Stamats and Hines alternated in knife-like slashes at the line after gaining the ball on Manual's 36-yard line on an exchange of punts. Starting from this point, Stamats dug through the line for seven yards and followed with a slant through left tackle for five more. Hines, in three efforts, made another first down, gaining the decision in his thrust by two inches. Hines and Stamats hacked away at the Manual barrier until they made another first down on the five-yard line, from which point the front lines tugged the ball over. He failed in his attempt at goal. Manual arose to its greatest brilliance and to its sturdiest courage early in the fourth quarter, when it repulsed the Iowan's after they had hammered their way to the two-foot line. Jeff Hicks to Safety. Jeffries kicked to safety from behind the precious goal line. Cedar Rapids scrimmaged from the 25-yard mark and the hearts of Manual supporters sunk on the next play when the elusive Hahn raced around right for an apparent touchdown, but the Cedar Rapids boys were offsides and the ball was, brought back. Hope again was renewed by the cohorts of Manual, but the struggling Crimsons were unable to advance, closer than the 33-yard line to the goal of the visitors. This advance was registered a few minutes before the termination of play on two successful forward pass plays, the second, Jeffries to Potter taking the ball to this mark. With darkness rapidly engulfing the field and the minute hand galloping to the finis of the game the Manual boys tried three forward passes in a row. The first two were incomplete, and the third was intercepted. Manual again regained the ball on downs, and again was forced to punt. Stamats, The Red Grange of the Iowans, reeled off another first down, but before the ball again could be snapped into action the pistol shot from the chief timer ended all play with the leather in possession of the visitors on the 37- yard line. The visitors, while gaining much more yardage on rushes than Manual, made but two more first downs. The crowd, estimated at 7,500, if not the biggest, was the proudest that ever has seen Manual play in Louisville. The duPont Manual brothers and cousins, godmothers and godfathers beamed with pride as they entered the portals, and many did what they had a perfect right to do—stick their chin up and strut! Others were impelled, in the humbleness of their gratitude, to bare their head and pause as if in prayer. Linger In Stadium. Slowly the Manual family moved to their seats, but even more slowly did they leave the magic stadium, as if reveling all the more in each moment of lingering as memories surged on them. Here at last was Home, Home after thirty-three years of wandering and wondering. Their team from the earliest formation had been a team without a home, waifs at the mercy of landlords, no blade of grass to call theirs. Buffeted from one common to another-dang nigh outcast if not objects of charity. They made their own uniforms in the shops, fastened their own improvised ccleats to their shoes, fashioned their own pads and headgears, and played with every football granted them until it no longer could be patched. They were impoverished in everything but grit, but they were rich in this. They accepted whatever coaching that was volunteered them, but the real development of the team was through the strength of character that gave duPont Manual the will to go on and on, with nothing under them but borrowed soil; but over head was Faith, and back of them was Determination and Loyalty, and ahead was Vision.
