Last Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Charley Lewis and Miss Amy Mather daughter of Samuel Mather of Lewis Bottom, came to Shellsburg, accompnied by the young lady's father, for the sole pupose of being made man and wife. Driving up to the M.E. parsonage, they alighted, thinking that in a few short moments the words would be pronounced that would make them as one in the sight of God, but upon their entering the house imagine their surprise when Rev. Pitner informed them that as the license had been secured at Marion, they would be compelled to be married in Linn County. The young couple not to be outdone loaded themselves into the sled and taking the minister along with them, drove over the line into Linn county where they stood up in the sled with the mercury ranging away below zero, and in less time than it takes to tell were joined in the holy bonds of martimony. Rev. Pitner after receiving his little fee returned home and the newly made couple went on their way rejoicing. The young people have lived in this vicinity for a number of years and have a host of friends who extend their hearty congratulations and hope their married life may be ever full of sunshine, and the call says long may they live and be able to tell their grandchildren under what difficult circumstances they were married.
